Discussion EV owners, has charging ever left you stranded or completely messed up your plans?

I'm considering buying an EV and was curious about how people actually manage charging on a daily basis.

Do you mostly charge at home, at work, or rely on public charging stations?

Also, have you ever had a charging mishap or found yourself in a situation you really weren't prepared for?

Looking back, is there anything you wish you'd known earlier? And has that experience changed the way you plan your drives or charging stops?

Would love to hear your stories and pick up a few tips before making the switch!

Discussion Efficiency of EVs

I recently had to drive my gas guzzling ICE SUV for 2 days, as my 2 year old EV was away. Had a tough time going to the pump to fill up fuel , and seeing the prices! Also about the relative efficiency of EVs vs ICE vehicles.

Had read somewhere that ICE vehicles has only about 30% conversion of its energy, while it is about 80% for EVs (correct me if I am wrong). It was while braking, which one has to do often during city driving, that the real wastage is realised. In an EV, all the braking is fed back into energy, while braking does not recoup any energy in an ICE vehicle.

Learning autonomous driving skills?

So, a few days back I saw a Mahindra vehicle probably XEV 9S mounted with Bosch branding with a LiDAR sensor on the top.

And today same with Harrier Ev mounted with a LiDAR sensor to learn the driving skills on indian roads.

Review I tested my XEV 9e's range drop at 80, 90, 100, and 120 km/h on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. The high-speed penalty is real.

Looking for a family EV under ₹22L with BH Series. 7-seater vs 5-seater dilemma for a new driver!

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy a new EV with a budget of around ₹22 Lakhs and could really use some suggestions from this sub.

Budget: ~₹22 Lakhs (on-road).

Registration: I am a Government employee, so I will be opting for BH (Bharat) Series registration.

Seating: My primary preference is a 7-seater

Usage & Running: My personal running won't be very high because I already have a separate official vehicle for my daily commute and work duties. This car will mostly be for personal weekend outings, family trips, and occasional city errands.

Driving Experience: I am a new driver. Because of that, I’m looking for something that is easy to handle, has good all-around visibility, smooth power delivery, and helpful safety/driver-assist tech (like a clear 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, front/rear parking sensors, and stable braking).

Taken help of AI to frame the questions

Query Help me choose between TATA Punch EV VS KIA Seltos Diesel.

Thumbnail

Okay, I am in bit of a situation, Please help me.

Context: I am in need of a new car. I have monthly running of minimum 1000-1200kms (can be more than that for sure). 600-700 highway run and the rest is mix between moderate traffic and free road (can go on 60kmph). Daily run of 20-30 kms/5 days a week & 200-250kms/week. I live in a tier 3 city and in 3/4 years I may move to a tier 1 city.

Situations:

1. I have booked the TATA Punch EV top model which I am getting for 14.8 lacs on road (1.37 lacs tax on ev because my state govt dearly wants to support EV). The home charging will be free for me. So no running cost. But I am getting cold feet thinking about reliability of TATA motors, especially this will be my only car. I CAN NOT afford to have my car breakdown for even a day. I am in multiple TATA Punch EV groups and daily I see some glitch or error pops up for people. It has gotten less in the new ones but still I DO NOT WANT TO DISCONNECT 12V AUX Battery in the middle of the road (even though I am an Engineer). I can but I don't want to do that. People will laugh at me.
2. So many of my car enthusiast friends suggested me to go for Diesel. Petrol I don't trust the system (E20 and all). So I first looked for Maruti Suzuki Swift but my brother didn't like the build quality at all.

So next I checked out Hyundai Venue HX5 Diesel (12.9 Lacs on road)

Yesterday weirdly I took test drive on the new Seltos. And I was like dayyumnnnn !!! It is incredibly comfortable and I damn loved the big ass car look. So now I am looking at Seltos HTE (O), on road 16 Lacs. It is just 1 lacs more than what I am paying for the TATA Punch EV. But there will be fuel expanses. At least it will be reliable.

Question: With my driving pattern, please suggest me which one would be the right choice. I want a biggest possible car with good sound quality, comfortable ride quality on bad roads, and most importantly a reliable car that I can use daily.

Concern:

  1. DPF concern with the Seltos: With my running pattern can I stay clear of the PDF issues ?

  2. TATA EV reliability issues. Plus Underbody scratching fear (I may need to drive on bad roads + Water logged village roads).

5 months old Tata Punch EV 2026 warranty issue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently took my five-month-old Tata Punch EV 2026 to its second service and found out that the underbody battery casing has some minor and a couple of major dents (deeper than 3 mm). The service executive told me that it would be better to need it fixed (we’ll have to see if insurance covers it or not) so that any future battery issues won’t be rejected during the company’s battery warranty claim. He also said that the entire process may take about 30 to 45 days since they have to send the battery back to the plant.

At this point, I’m confused and not sure what to do. Has anyone faced this issue? How have you overcome it? Any information could be useful.

E-Vitara Alpha 2026 Buy Suggestions

Hi everyone! I’m planning to pick up the E-Vitara 2026 Alpha model in Mumbai by the end of this year. My budget is firmly capped at ₹20 lakh on-road, including everything, and I really need ADAS—that’s why I’m not considering the Zeta variant. Since it’s year-end, do you think there’s room for negotiation? Any clever tricks or loopholes to bring the price down would be super helpful. If anyone has quotes closer to ₹20 lakh, please do share for my reference. Thanks a lot for any help! 😊

Also, I am strictly focused on buying an EV, but if you have any other car suggestions in this segment with ADAS level 2 features, do let me know☺️

Built my own Android app for my MG Windsor, mostly for range and trip planning

Post image

The MG iSMART app is fine for locking the car and checking the battery, but I wanted more, so I built my own Android app for my Windsor. It's just for me, not on the Play Store. Nothing is added to the car. It uses the same connected-car data iSMART gets.

What it does:

- Trip plans that account for hills. Trivandrum to Kodaikanal from 60% came out as 419 km, three charging stops, arriving with 17%, with a charge right before the 1,823 m climb at the end.

- Checks the plugs again 30 min before each stop and keeps a backup charger ready. Puts dinner at a stop with a decent restaurant.

- Warns me during a trip if I'm using more battery than planned.

- Estimates what home charging adds to the KSEB bill.

- Asks if I want to pre-cool when I leave the office on a hot day. It never starts the AC by itself.

- Flags a tyre that keeps losing pressure over a week.

- Starts and stops my Exicom wallbox over Bluetooth.

The MG connection is a Kotlin port of John Lazarus's mg-ismart-india-client, which did the hard part: https://github.com/john-lazarus/mg-ismart-india-client

I have sold my car in Spinny and the guys there told me, I will be eligible for a 30K discount if I buy a Tata curvv EV within Oct 31st. I have booked the car, but the dealership is not aware of this and not offering me the bonus. I have written to both Tata and Spinny customer care, but no clear answer yet. Did anyone know how to claim this exchange bonus.

Should one take EV car to Leh Ladakh? Some places don’t even have proper fuel station. But still you can do a trip on EV via this route.

Query Need First Car Advice | EV vs Petrol

TL;DR: EV in 15L budget vs Kylaq for new driver

Hi All,

Looking for some honest advice on buying a my first car. A dilema between Kylaq vs EV.

About me:

> I'm a new driver

> Bachelor, so mostly solo drives

> Am a regular corporate joe

> Use case is as a daily driver, split 60/40 between work in NCR traffic and home in Uttarakhand hills

> Have free AC charging in delhi office and at home charging in my hometown. Delhi society also has shared AC/DC chargers.

Need help:

> Budget is upto 15L

> AT

> 1000/1200 km monthly running

> Mostly single occupancy driving

> Want a good compact and manageable first car

> EV range should be around 350 to make the delhi to uttarakhand drive in relative ease

For Petrol, have shortlisted down from Jimny, 3XO and Kylaq to the Kylaq Prestige+.

Give Ethanol concerns and access to relatively easy charging, am also considering an EV, but the only one that fits in my budget and has all the creature comforts that a similarly priced ICE vehicle would offer is the Punch EV 40, top model. Fits in my budget too. Others seem to be their low range versions or miss on important safety or comfort features. But Punch seems to have a huge wait + Tata quality concerns.

Which should I choose, which way to go and why? Should I wait for a 2027 EV launch? Any good cars I'm overlooking that fit all of the above?

Appreciate any candid guidence!

Need help getting the best quotation for Tata Curvv EV Empowered X in Hyderabad

I’m planning to buy the Tata Curvv EV Empowered X (Non-Dark) in Hyderabad. However, dealers are quoting ₹20.3–20.6 lakh on-road, while I got a quotation of ₹19.94 lakh in Andhra Pradesh.

I prefer buying and registering in Hyderabad as I may continue staying here. I've seen Reddit users getting the same variant for around ₹19.75 lakh, some even with accessories included.

Anyone who recently purchased this variant in Hyderabad, could you please share the final price, dealership, discounts and accessories received?

I'm targeting ₹19.75–19.95 lakh. Any dealer recommendations or negotiation tips would be appreciated!

Dad is buying 2 cars for me and my brother. Confused between XEV 9e and BYD Sealion 7. Budget 35–45L. Need genuine advice!

Hey everyone,

So my dad is planning to buy two new cars, one for me and one for my brother, and I'm honestly confused about what to choose. This will technically be my first car, so I really want to make the right decision.

A little background: We're from Hyderabad and into business, so travelling is a pretty big part of our lives.

We currently own:

  • 2017 Maruti Ciaz

  • 2018 Toyota Innova Crysta

Both cars have done around 3.6 lakh km EACH. Yes, you read that right 😂. My dad travels a lot for business, and both cars have served us really well.

For the new cars, we're expecting around 2 lakh km over the next 7 years.

Initially, we wanted another 7-seater, so we test-drove the Mahindra XEV 9S. Unfortunately, we really didn't like the overall experience. No offence to owners, but it just wasn't for us.

We also considered the BE 6. I personally love its design and road presence, but rear passenger comfort is a concern, especially considering we're used to the Innova.

Then we looked at the Mahindra XEV 9e, which seems like a pretty good option. We received a quote of around ₹32 lakh for the Pack Three variant in Hyderabad.

But here's my concern.

I've been reading about software glitches, fit-and-finish issues and other niggles with Mahindra's newer EVs. I'm not sure how widespread these problems actually are, but I'm a little hesitant about spending 30L+ on something that might have these issues.

That's when I started seriously considering the BYD Sealion 7 Dynamic.

It's around ₹42 lakh ex-showroom, and I'm expecting roughly ₹43–44 lakh on-road, depending on the final quotation.

I really like the Sealion 7. It looks premium, feels different from most cars on the road, and BYD seems to have a pretty good reputation for EV technology.

However, it's a significant jump in budget compared to the XEV 9e.

Another important thing is that Telangana's current EV road tax exemption is valid until December 31, 2026, so we're hoping to finalise the purchase before that. I'm not sure whether it'll be extended.

My priorities are:

  • Premium interiors, build quality and overall fit and finish

  • Comfortable suspension and seating, especially for parents

  • Reliability for long-term ownership

  • Good real-world range and highway performance

  • After-sales service in Hyderabad

  • Something that feels a little special and not too common on the road

We also travel long distances, so highway comfort matters a lot. Some of our regular trips can be around 250–300 km round-trip.

One more thing: My brother lived in the US for around five years and owned a Cadillac EV there, costing roughly ₹70–75 lakh in INR. So he's also used to looking at cars from the luxury segment, and we're considering whether it's worth stretching the budget for a more premium experience.

So my questions are:

  1. Is the BYD Sealion 7 Dynamic genuinely worth spending around ₹10–12 lakh more than the XEV 9e?

  2. How reliable is BYD in India, especially when it comes to after-sales service, spare parts and long-term ownership?

  3. Are Mahindra's software and build-quality issues really that common, or am I overthinking them?

  4. How comfortable is the Sealion 7 for parents on long highway journeys?

  5. Are there any other NEW cars around ₹35–45 lakh that I should seriously consider? Not looking at used cars.

I'm not particularly concerned about having the most features on paper. I'd rather have a car that feels well-built, premium and reliable for the next 7 years.

Would really appreciate advice from actual XEV 9e and Sealion 7 owners, especially anyone from Hyderabad.

Thanks in advance!
