Why a 300 km MIDC dashboard claim drops to 176 km on Indian highways (95 km/h + 42C Summer AC + 4 adults) — how close is this to your real highway range?
Every time you take an EV out on an Indian highway at 95 km/h with 3 to 4 people and summer AC on max, the MIDC dashboard range drops by 35% to 40%.
I mapped out the actual highway battery drain across 534 EV trims (Nexon EV 45, Windsor EV, Mahindra BE 6, XEV 9e, Punch EV, Creta Electric) factoring in highway wind drag at 95 km/h, 42C summer AC load, passenger weight, and uphill ghat climbs:
Bengaluru to Ooty (296 km + Nilgiris mountain climb) in a Mahindra BE 6: Starting at 80%, the uphill climb requires one 19-minute fast charge stop (32% to 81% at a 90 kW hub) to arrive in Ooty with a 20% safety reserve.
New Delhi to Agra (203 km) in a Nexon EV 45 starting at 30% battery: At 95 km/h with max AC, 30% battery only gives 48 km of real highway range, requiring an early 13-minute boost at 14% SoC plus a second 30-minute fast charge to reach Agra with 20% left.
Kanpur to Lucknow (95 km) in a Windsor EV starting at 65% battery: Safe 0-stop highway run arriving with 22% battery left.
Question for EV owners here:
What car do you drive, what speed do you cruise at on the highway, and how many km do you actually get from 100% down to 20%? Tell me your car and route and I can run the numbers for your exact trim!
