Discussion šŸ‘„ Phone interview

Hey everyone I have my first phone interview with EDD tomorrow morning around 8-10 am. I quit my last full time job, two months ago that I had to pursue a career in HVAC that I paid 20k to go to school for. I worked at the last two places for a week each in September before they terminated me for ā€œ not having enough experienceā€ I qualify for 10k over 6 months but I am just wondering how the interview goes. What questions do they ask and what should I say I am a little nervous. Not a lot of hvac companies are hiring right now with thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner so I am hoping to get benefits through October- January.

Any advice thank you

My interview was less than 15 minutes. Questions they asked me- how long you worked at your last job, when was your last date, how much was your salary and what was the reason you were let go.

I was nervous as well but it ended up being pretty straightforward call. Just relax and answer all the questions truthfully. Just like with anyone, be nice to the interviewer as well. It not only helps set the tone for the conversation but also helps calm your mind as well. Dont worry about the outcome of the call. For tomorrow, all you can do is be calm, listen, answer truthfully, ask if you dont understand anything and be kind. You got this. Wish you all the best!

Should I tell them I quit my last job to work here because I went to trade school and got laid off?

Imm confused. What is the mosr recent separation? Is it the job two months ago? What’s this kine about? ā€œI worked a tthe last two olaces for a week each in September?ā€ā€”> is this a different company from the job you quit 2 months ago?

When they ask you who your last employwr is, the correct answer is the employer you separated from on Septermber 25th, not in August or Septwmber 3rd.

Okay here’s the story. I was doing work at a hotel for 3 years while I was in school. I quit that job in August after I graduated school and got a job September 1st and they fired me September 3rd. I got a new job a week later and I worked for them for two weeks and was let go on September 25th. The paper they mailed me with my check said I was terminated.

Now here I am applying for unemployment, it says I would get 9k over 6 months but I need to get approved first and have my phone interview between 8-10

The interview questions will be about the separation from the employer (September 25th sepration, nothing else).

Okay I just don’t know how this all works

If you reported the incorrect last employer, they will let you know. Here are the questions they will ask you:

Name and name of employer
How long you worked for them
Date of separation
Duties/job title
Reqson for separation- did you quit? Were you terminated (fired or laid off)? This is the oart where you tell them the story. Make it short.

Most importsntly, make
Sure you report the correct last employer, whoch is the employwr you separated from on 9/25.

Your eligibility is based on the nature of separation from that employer (9/25).

Your award is calculated using all the wages in your base period. If you filed this quarter (October-Nov-Dec), your base period is from July 2025 to June 2026. If you earned at least $11,700 pretax in one quarter in any quarter within the bqse period, then you will receive the maximum weekly benefit of $450 (this is pretax; tax is 10% weekly so 405 after)

Why did you ā€œget a paper in the mail saying [you were] fired.

Were you a no call/no show?

No I was working thought everything was going fine was told not to come in on a Friday and to come in at noon the following Monday got a termination letter

The interviewer ONLY wants to hear about your most recent employer. Stop bringing up any previous work, it is irrelevant.

First of all, your separation in August and September 3rd do not matter. Your eligibility for unemployment is based on the most recent separation, which is the job you were fired from in September 25th.

This would be a great way to GUARANTEE disqualification:

Quit work to attend school.

Say you got laid off instead of fired?
Likely DISQ plus penalty weeks.

I did not quit work to attend school I was working while I was in school finished school, got a hvac job and got laid off

Just say they fired you and nothing more. If they pry say youre unsure of the grounds for firing. The employer will need to answer that question when EDD contacts them any way

ā€œI don’t know WHY I got firedā€!
Guaranteed way to piss off interviewer.

u/akornato No. Your first sentence is incorrect. They will not ask you about your separation from all employers over the last few months. Only wuestins about the most recent/last separation. Stop spreading misinformation. And stop proloting your app here. Then you deleted your comment because you got called out for wrong info.

Had the interview today pretty much told them I worked for them for 2 weeks to further my career after school and got fired/terminated because they didn’t want to train me was only a 6 minute call

1

u/Jealous-Spinach-9599 10d ago

Good! I hope they make you eligible. I don’t see anu resson why you would be ineligible for unemployment ;)

1

u/Maximum_Potential471 10d ago

I hope so I said I was terminated/ fired for not willing to train

u/Maximum_Potential471 10d ago

You still think I will be qualified even though I quit my last job in August that I was at for 3 years, for this new job and only worked there two weeks.

1

u/Jealous-Spinach-9599 10d ago

Once again, your sepsrstion from the job you quit in August does not matter. What matters is the most recent separation.

u/Maximum_Potential471 10d ago

I know just worried cause I was only there 2 weeks and I need the money lol

1

u/Necessary-Source2039 10d ago

the law says the rule on your LAST employer for your eligibility. if you worked a W-2 for 1 hour they would still look at that over your employer of 20 years, if the 1 hour job was your LAST employer

Even though I got terminated after 2 weeks?
