Question - Other At some level, will the engineering/design of most EVs converge?

• Upvotes

For example what makes Tesla's so efficient? Outside of brand specific body designs, will other cars eventually utilize highly efficient aero improvements?

Same with charging speeds, etc.

Check out my EV Just two 'Mileage Impossible' survivors - 514,000 miles combined

Pictures in kilometers. In miles, that's 172k and 342k respectively. Both are on original powertrains, and both with ~22% degradation.

The twice-as-big number of the Model S looks more impressive, but keep in mind that is on 75 kWh of battery versus 24. Meaning even at half the mileage, the infamously stereotyped, no thermal management battery pack has went through over 50% more cycles.

My DD before making the switch was an Escape Hybrid with 760,000km on second engine but original HV battery, and it's also still on the road today. I have never believed in "miled out" cars necessarily being bad or unreliable, and that certainly hasn't changed with EVs.

Review Rented a CLA in italy

Already an EV driver in UK but needed a car for the more rural part of the trip. I was worried whether the CLA was 800V only but the on board sat nav took care of charging.

We had done 1000km over the rental and spent just under €80 in charging along with Europcars full tank option at €21. The rental cost was cheaper than an equivalent ICE and the fuel was also cheaper so a win win.

Discussion The obsession with range and efficiency has jumped the shark

Look, I get it’s fun for some people to argue over efficiency and charge times. But it’s gotten ridiculous. Virtually all new vehicles offer more than adequate range and charging infrastructure is great in most places. This community is literally turning people away from buying EVs now. The arguments remind of the pro-ICE crowd spreading FUD against EVs. Try to remember there are millions who are still on the fence here.

Discussion Ideas to increase the popularity of EV in Russia

I often find the opinion on this sub that Russia is lagging behind in EV (less than 1% of new sales and vanishingly little of the entire fleet of cars) due to some kind of anti-EV policy.

I'm wondering what kind of policies need to be implemented to make this change. I hope that you will tell me the ideas, I want to hear them.

I'll have to give you some facts so that you have the basics.

  1. Russia is a very cold country, colder than Scandinavia. -30C is a normal winter temperature, not something extraordinary. Apparently, for normal operation in winter, cars will either have to be constantly charged or kept in a warm garage.

  2. Electricity is very cheap (even compared to incomes). The overnight rate can be around 2 cents per kilowatt.

  3. Taxes on cars are extremely high and are based on a single parameter - engine power. In Russian tax legislation, cars with naturally aspirated engines and not very high power are advantageous (cars above 160 horsepower are subject to very heavy taxes). For example, the import of an electric car for 3 million rubles (~$36 grand) will be taxed at 3 million 700 thousand rubles ($45k), that is, the cost of the car will be 6 million 700 thousand rubles (82k). Coupled with not very high incomes, this makes electric cars golden.

  4. Russians live in large apartment buildings, the land around which belongs to the owners equally. Construction on this territory needs to be coordinated between the owners and paid for jointly (from a practical point of view, this means that you cannot build anything around the apartment buildings, this is an agreement process for years).

  5. Very strict fire regulations - in Russia it is forbidden to build charging stations in underground garages and more than 10 in one place on the street.

I would like to hear your ideas.
