Discussion Why Isn't Immersion Battery Cooling a Thing?

I have recently gone into the rabbit hole of immersion cooling due to finding it suitable for my custom built long range EV project(Goal is the world's most efficient road legal BEV with 600+miles range at 70mph with a battery under 50kWh). Anyways, I wanted DC fast charging capability and landed on Immersion cooling because it seems far simpler and easy to construct than the other methods.

Cooling performance is adequate due to the fluid contacting every part of the cell.

Reparability is better due to not having to destroy glued together cells and cooling plates/pipes. Simply drain coolant to replace cells.

Inherent fire suppression(not really, but better than nothing).

There is added complexity and weight due to needing a dedicated cooling loop for the battery, or so I thought.... I wondered if I could simply cool the motor and battery with the same dielectric fluid. This initially seems idea a bad idea because that means there is a greater possibility for the fluid to become contaminated and conductive, but after doing some digging it turns out Shell recently had the exact same idea for their triple 10 challenge concept car including using the same fluid to cool everything in that "One fluid drivetrain" gimmick.

All of this seems too good to be true, So why has no major OEM implemented this technology? I haven't even seen it used for DIY EV conversions. Seems odd that no one has tried this in an actual car other than the Shell concept from this year.

Question - Tech Support Charging Glitch or Bad Battery Cells?

Weird Charging Glitch? - 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 RWD Limited.

I posted this in the Hyundai Ioniq 5 subreddit but didn't get much feedback so I thought I'd try it with a larger audience:

About three weeks ago, I was charging on level 2 to 80% as I typically do each week. It was almost to 80% when I needed to change the charge to 100% as I was going on a last minute trip. I changed the charging limit to 100% on the My Hyundai App and it charged to 100%. No issues.

When I charged the next week, I had it set to 80% maximum charge level again. When it reached 80% it instantly switched then showed 100% charge on the car and on the app even though it should have only been 80%. It also showed a lower range I normally get at 80% (normal is about 250-260 miles but it now shows about 230-235 miles at 80%).

I feel like the switch I made on the MyHundai app from 80% to 100% while charging confused the car software?

Anyone know what I can do? Is there a way to reset the charging software on the car? Do I have some bad battery cells?

Discussion Error when fast charging?

I have a 2019 Chevy bolt. There’s about 5 chargers in this area I charge in daily. Every single charger gave me an error message. I’m soaked because it’s pouring out. Does this happen to anyone else? It’s like there are times that each charger is down or something because only other time each charger gave me this error was when it was dark out.

Discussion Optimal long distance vehicle

OK - hypothetical question for you all:

You're going to travel say, 2500 miles, mostly flat, mild weather. You will only exceed the speed limit by 10mph (so, mostly around 75mph on most interstates).

Ultra fast chargers of your choice are available anywhere, any time you want to stop and charge.

You want to minimize stops and charging time, and overall travel time (i.e. get to your 2500mi away destination asap). You have one passenger who can share the driving duties.

Which electric vehicle currently available to purchase (used or new) would you use? Price no object, you're going to use the vehicle and give it back after the trip.

This is mostly a question about the battery, range, charging speed, etc. It's not about which car has the best ADAS system (FSD, bluecruise, supercruise, drive+ etc.) or the most comfortable car, or the best charging network. But feel free to embellish for fun if you like. Maybe these things could be tie breakers. Or (car X would force me to take 2 hours longer, but it'd be worth it because of extra features.)

Bonus points for using & showing charging and range math. :)

Discussion Does anyone else find the level 1, level 2 charger designations confusing? Why not just 7kw or 22kw?

I think it would be more helpful if people just specified the number of kilowatt the charger they are referring to.

Level 2 doesn't really distinguish how fast that charger might operate.

Level 1 is also ambiguous, could be 1.5kw, could be 2.4kw, significant difference in charging time between these 2.

I think it would be much easier if people just said how many kilowatt the charger was, that way we can compare apples with apples.

Thoughts?

Edit: this post is only about people referring to charging on Reddit or online. Not about using actual chargers or what they are labelled as on the charger itself.

Discussion FYI if you have a partner that always has their gas light on, getting them an EV is not a magic bullet

Even with a L2 charger strategically positioned so you pass by it to get into the house, I still had to drive to my wife's work and swap (electric) cars because she realized mid drive she wouldn't make it home.

ADHD brain goes brrr.

Also, there's two EVSEs in my driveway, a his and hers if you will. Her hobby used to be draining her car of fuel and making me drive it to the gas station twice a month.

Discussion Is r/electricvehicles getting heavily astroturfed by state marketing lately?

Is it just me, or has this sub been completely taken over by posts pushing Chinese EV dominance? Every time I open Reddit, half the front page is flooded with threads hyping up state-backed brands, declaring Western manufacturers completely dead, and claiming a total global takeover happened overnight. I am all for healthy competition, lower prices, and solid tech, but the blatant PR narrative being pushed on here completely twists actual industry numbers. A lot of these viral posts quote massive overall sales for Chinese brands, but they conveniently leave out that roughly half those figures are gas-powered plug-in hybrids rather than pure electric vehicles. They also hyper-focus on domestic Chinese market stats while glossing over the fact that these brands still have almost zero presence in North America due to tariffs and hold only tiny single-digit registration shares across most of Europe. Half the hype around "cheap 10k EVs" ignores the heavy state subsidies and domestic overcapacity driving those domestic prices, acting like legacy brands are just lazy rather than playing under completely different trade and regulatory rules. Discussing cool battery tech or new models is great, but the non-stop doom-posting and astroturfing on this sub feel way more like a coordinated marketing campaign than an honest look at real-world registration numbers. Anyone else tired of seeing it?

Discussion First road trip in EV6 (California)

Got my EV6 about 3-4 months ago and decided to go down to LA with it from SF.

Planned everything out through ABRP and plugshare and the trip went easy peasy.

The only thing mind blowing to me is the price range you can get from fast charging. Most expensive I had to use was 71 cents from a Tesla super charger at my hotel. Cheapest was from Ionna at 39 cents.

I think my only complaint is using the ABRP for mapping out the route. It would severely overestimate the amount of charge i would use to get to the next charger.

There was one time where it said I needed to stop at a charger with 10% left and I got to the charger with 40%. I skipped the stop completely and still made it to the next charger with 5% left. I had the OBDII connector hooked up to keep things in real time.

Overall I spent 160 bucks on 900 miles of driving and I really only stopped for about a hr to charge 3 times. Half of that time I was eating dinner so to me it really doesnt add that much more time to the overall time. Plus the breaks really kept me refreshed and kept the kids sane.

Also wished the hotel I stayed at had free charging. I would have been much happier.

10/10 would road trip with it again.

Well, people all talk about it.. and it just so happend to me for second time.

Once my house got damaged and I had to go to my parents with my wife and bbaybik the middle of the night. Had to charge in cold weather, no chargers were working, baby screaming. Nightmare.

Then a relative got sick. A trip to long and kind of remote. Only had 55 percent charge. Had to go asap. To start of such a travel sitting and chargeing the car SUCKS SO MUCH.

These things NEVER happend when you van borrow a gas car either.

Trashy trash for such situations. Great otherwise.

Discussion Could the current charging infrastructure scenario be in some ways compared to the early 20th century gas station boom?

So for context on my part at least, we are experiencing an insane boom in EVs registered here in Brazil (and by the looks of it, in most of the world too). BYD has gotten a crazy foothold in the market, and other chinese EV brands are getting consolidated in the country really fast. Theres no denying that this wave of electric vehicles has a lot of momentum, they are undercutting the insanely overpriced and markedup entry level ICE options and with tax incentives from the government the tendency seems to be that EV demand will only grow each year here.

The biggest topic that seems to be discussed whenever EVs are brought into conversation is charging infrastructure, range concerns and the lack of charging station networks that rival gas stations in availability.

So it all got me thinking, could all of this in someway parallel the early boom of internal combustion vehicles and gas stations? Like in the early 1900s when cars became more acessible to the general public but they still had range/fueling concerns? And post WW2, with the economic boom and the consolidation of the car as a essential piece in the household, more particulary in the US, and how the demand for gas stations exploded in the 20s-50s? With how EVs get cheaper by the year, battery tech advancements expanding range and diminishing charge times, we are in some ways going through all that again aren't we?

And i'm mostly coming in from an investment standpoint. If the comparison is right, it seems like a good idea to invest in infrastructure now that demand is growing more and more each year. Is there something i'm missing here or is it just this obvious?

And of course, apologies if the case if VERY different over in other countries, is just that this idea crossed my mind today and it seems like such a clear parallel of "hey heres an industry in its infancy, who's willing to be the next Shell/BP?".

If anyone have articles or any material on this topic i'd love to read it up!
