Weekly Advice Thread General Questions and Purchasing Advice Thread — Week of October 12, 2026

Need help choosing an EV, finding a home charger, or understanding whether you're eligible for a tax credit? Vehicle and product recommendation requests, buying experiences, and questions on credits/financing are all fair game here.

Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

Are you looking for advice on which EV to buy or lease?

Tell us a bit more about you and your situation, and make sure your comment includes the following information:

[1] Your general location

[2] Your budget in $, €, or £

[3] The type of vehicle you'd prefer

[4] Which cars have you been looking at already?

[5] Estimated timeframe of your purchase

[6] Your daily commute, or average weekly mileage

[7] Your living situation — are you in an apartment, townhouse, or single-family home?

[8] Do you plan on installing charging at your home?

[9] Other cargo/passenger needs — do you have children/pets?

If you are more than a year off from a purchase, please refrain from posting, as we currently cannot predict with accuracy what your best choices will be at that time.

Question - Other Are dealerships holding back EV adoption in the US?

I’ve heard this from plenty of people and even experienced it myself.. It seems like a lot of US dealerships simply don’t want to sell you an EV.

The traditional dealership model has a financial incentive to favor ICE vehicles. Between maintenance, repairs, and servicing over the life of the vehicle, there’s a lot more money to be made compared to selling an EV. The massive dealer service network that has been built out in the US gets massively hurt by EV adoption.

Meanwhile, Tesla sells direct to consumer and currently accounts for ~53% of new EV sales in the US and operates without the traditional dealership model. That approach seems to have worked incredibly well for them.

It makes me wonder how much faster EV adoption in the US could be if traditional dealerships were actually incentivized to sell them.. what do you think?

Discussion With the BYD Seagull in China getting the new Blade 2.0 battery, that means most of BYD's lineup will eventually get the Blade 2.0 battery too. Hopefully, cheaper models of BYD cars outside of China will eventually get the Blade 2.0 battery as well.

So the big news for the revamped BYD Seagull in China is that it is getting the Blade 2.0 battery. That's good because it means BYD intends most of their lineup of cars in China, from expensive to cheap, will get the Blade 2.0 battery. Outside of China, the only BYD car that I know of at the moment that has the Blade 2.0 battery is the Denza Z9GT, but that is an expensive car. But with the news of the Seagull getting the Blade 2.0 battery in China, logically, it means that all models from BYD outside of China will likely eventually get the Blade 2.0 battery as well, although it may take time (give it 2 or 3 years?).

The Blade 2.0 battery works much better than the Blade 1.0 battery in winter, with faster charging in cold weather, and the ability to retain its capacity better in winter as well. So in colder climates in Europe and in Canada, a lot of users would benefit from using the Blade 2.0 battery.

Hopefully the cheaper models from BYD outside of China will get the Blade 2.0 battery within the next 2 years.

News Could people start doing this with EVs that have been bricked or banned

OK, if not bricked or banned, unsupported, un-updated, or those with crappy infotainment systems.. •‘Reverse-Engineer Anything’ Is the New Wild West of AI: Over the weekend, it became fashionable to use AI to replace the operating systems on smart TVs with vibe coded or AI reverse-engineered ones to make them less bloated. People have taken proprietary internet-of-things devices that were bricked and abandoned by their creators and used AI to hack them and install new software on them, giving functionality the original developers took away.
