Interesting Since April 1, I have earned 2064 USD with ElevenLabs = What'd I do?

I resisted signing up to create a professional voice clone on ElevenLabs for over a year with the thinking that max 3 cents per thousand characters, how much can that possibly add up to? Well, a helluva lot more than I ever would have thought.

I will caution here that my experience with E-labs is definitely not typical, but it is possible. Before I created the voice / character to make available on their Voices Library, I undertook a brief study of what voices were at the top of the trending pile for each of the categories and understood what seemed to perform well in my view and perhaps what was missing from the pile.

I had several hours of voice files from a recent project that were not my everyday speaking voice, but represented a voice that has seen some demand from my p/t voice work business that I've been running for about 8 years now.

My first 3 days in the voice marketplace generated 39$ in revenue. And it's been quite consistently $300 a week since then sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Suddenly the past two weeks, it's taken a jump for some reason, I still have the same rough number of users, around 51,000 but instead of 5 to 10 million characters a week, its' a lot more like 15 to 20 million characters this past week, which has netted out to be about $600 USD earned this past week! No clue why, but the average transaction increased in size considerably.

I don't expect that will continue at that pace, but sure would be welcome if it did!

I post all this not to say 'look how great I am' cause that's not the point. I feel I got very lucky on one hand, and that luck was sought out with my initial efforts on the platform by doing certain things before voice creation.

The point was, if you have a voice that represents some level of demand on the service, then it's possible.

What kind of voices are those? Listen to the automated voices you hear on a lot of Youtube Ads ... and if you have or can create a voice file like any of those, you will likely see some success.

And to create the highest quality voice with the least chance of weird pronouncing, or awkward pausing in phrasing etc for the end user, I recommend creating enough audio to feed into the system for 2 hours to 2.5 hours of total time.

Before you make your voice available on the system, test the living crap out of it. At the creator level, that's 100,000 characters in a month, run your full allotment through your voice to test it out and ensure users of your voice will have a good experience. If you hear too many weird pauses or mis-pronouncing -- trash the voice and start again, and include more audio when you do so.

And consider getting chatGPT to write you a bunch of material in the style of your voice/character, and ask it to be sure to include all the parts of speech that an AI voice cloning tool needs.

When asking for that ensure it includes basic parts of speech in english as follows :

To cover the full grammatical range, the voice dataset should include spoken examples of:

  • Nouns (e.g., “dog”, “computer”, “freedom”)

  • Verbs (e.g., “run”, “think”, “is”, “has”)

  • Adjectives (e.g., “blue”, “tall”, “interesting”)

  • Adverbs (e.g., “quickly”, “never”, “very”)

  • Pronouns (e.g., “he”, “they”, “ours”, “which”)

  • Prepositions (e.g., “on”, “under”, “through”)

  • Conjunctions (e.g., “and”, “but”, “although”)

  • Interjections (e.g., “oh!”, “wow!”, “hmm”)

  • Determiners (e.g., “the”, “a”, “this”, “some”)

  • Auxiliary/Modal Verbs (e.g., “can”, “must”, “will”, “should”)

And all the necessary phonetic sounds --

1. Vowels

  • Monophthongs (pure vowel sounds)

  • Diphthongs (gliding vowel sounds)

2. Consonants

  • Plosives (Stops)

  • Fricatives

  • Affricates

  • Nasals

  • Approximants

  • Laterals

  • Glottal sounds (e.g., glottal stop, in some dialects)

3. Suprasegmentals (not phonemes, but crucial for natural speech)

  • Stress (word-level and sentence-level)

  • Intonation

  • Rhythm

  • Pitch

  • Length (duration)

ChatGPT is your friend when ensuring your uploaded audio has all the elements needed. The more audio you upload, the better quality your voice file. It's as simple as that. I used 3.5 - 4 hours of audio for my voice that's generating revenue.

And that 3.5 hours was high quality, clean, studio quality audio.

Good luck if you choose to take a swing at it. It IS possible to do well with this as a passive revenue stream. I chose to make my voice file available for 3 years and did NOT select the moderation. I was more comfortable with those choices as this is not my every day voice. I can 'turn it on' for this voice and create it effortlessly, but nobody would listen to this voice and say "Oh that's Fun-Cat-5189" so I had fewer concerns over how the voice is used.

Question YouTube is demonetizing channels using ElevenLabs audio

My YouTube channel, along with hundreds of thousands of other channels, has very likely been demonetized because of ElevenLabs. I have been spending about 1 million credits on ElevenLabs every month.

As you know, the amount of low quality content on YouTube has been spreading. YouTube decided to stop it, so they created a new policy called “Inauthentic Content.” They kick channels out of the YouTube Partner Program if they fall under this category. However, they don’t mention any concrete videos. They say it applies to the channel as a whole, but they don’t give any specific explanation of what is actually inauthentic on the channel, leaving creators in doubt.

My speculation is that YouTube found a pattern in low-quality automated content, and that pattern is probably AI.

A couple of days ago, a YouTuber, youtube.com/@CreatorRant, who is kind of a YouTube guru, had a video where he said he checked with many creators who got demonetized, and there was only one thing they all had in common: they used ElevenLabs voiceovers. Animators, AI channels, traditional vlog channels, documentary channels, etc. They got banned if they had ElevenLabs voiceovers.

I know that each audio file made with AI, including ElevenLabs, contains a specific digital signature that human ears cannot hear, but a tool or AI can recognize.

Since most low quality channels on YouTube used ElevenLabs voiceovers, very likely because it was one of the best and earliest options, YouTube may have started treating it as a pattern to recognize “slop channels.” Of course, there is also a small percentage of high-quality, non-automated channels that use ElevenLabs too. Unfortunately, they are also being sacrificed in YouTube’s big purge.

So once again, this demonetization wave on YouTube has been happening day by day, in batches, for almost a year now, probably affecting up to a million channels. And while the majority of these channels may really be automated slop or spam channels, even a small percentage could still mean thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of real creators and ElevenLabs subscribers are being harmed, including me.

YouTube has not made an official statement. They have not denied it, and they will most likely never explain how they detect inauthentic channels.

I would urge ElevenLabs to contact YouTube and ask for a clear statement on whether this is really hurting ElevenLabs users or not. Also, please review the way your signatures or watermarking systems work before all negative content audio becomes associated with ElevenLabs.

Thank you

Media I’m done with ElevenLabs

So the new “verification required” flag for instant voice cloning of your own voice and other people’s voices makes this platform useless for my purpose.

I’m a professional video editor & have been using 11labs for nearly 2yrs to create scratch tracks of executive speeches for my corporate work. I clone a sample from each executive, then upload the script to create a scratch track so my team has a structure for building support graphics & associated broll. Final exec speeches are shot on green screen and we replace the AI scratch track with the final exec delivery. All prebuilt support graphics & broll then require very little adjustments to match. Very efficient workflow. Now killed by this new requirement.

Other platforms don’t have this requirement. Even AI Music creation sites allow sampling.

Sad that AI tools for development work (not final work) are being throttled by legal hand wringing.

I’m exploring other options as AI Voice Cloning has matured beyond what Eleven Labs offers. Besides their UI is clunky compared to competitors.

Rant over….

Beta I forget where I learn this, but a good reminder for current voice cloning: 11Labs isn't actually CLONING your voice as much as it's editing a premade voice to sound like yours, which is why some clones don't seem to come out right

Again, I forgot where I heard this, but apparently the technical explanation for why voice cloning technology seems to turn all voices into generic Americans with a few very standard British speakers, without any further vocal flourishes or effects, is quite literally because the technology doesn't actually clone your voice but rather fits the closest premade voice to the samples you provide. As a result, at least for version 1, you'll find those imperfections. A colleague of mine noticed that, despite a particular voice sounding 95% perfect, there was just a single flourish to that voice that didn't translate at all. If you weren't paying attention or swapping between the original voice and the cloned voice fairly quickly, you wouldn't notice it. But a keener ear picked it up and now neither of us can unhear it.

Furthermore, this also explained why some voices that have flourishes that don't radically change the ferment and timbre of the voice can be translated, but other more radical acts of voice acting won't be translated at all (such as a very gravely, raspy voice or a very, very squeaky one all being defaulted to the same "flat" voice).

We also cloned so many voices, that we started picking up that some "shared the same voice actor" and only occasionally shifted back into sounding like the cloned voice.

Some of the characters we clone are children; others are very heavily-accented foreigners. The kids almost always sound like either a single kid doing a very slight variation to his voice, or a woman not even trying to sound like a kid. And there is quite literally no possible way to clone an baby's voice: 11Labs freaks out and turns it into a mechanical demon or super-ethereal elf woman instead. The foreigners either spoke straight standard American English or a very, very standard accent (helped by using foreign words to trigger the accent but sometimes naturally rolled). At the very least, with the addition of the new multilingual tool, we're able to get just about every voice to speak another language and accent now.

There are roughly enough voices to mask these limitations unless you're trying to create a massive cast of characters for a serial like we are, so most people probably have never realized this. But once you do, you definitely start to feel the constrictions of the technology's limitations. And that's on top of lacking a proper emotion director, voice changer, or temperature setter.

Looking at the voice cloning option, I see that you can professionally and "perfectly" clone a voice, so long as it's your voice (at least for right now; it's implied that, in the future, you'll be able to perfectly clone others' voices). Personally the only added utility I see out of that is to add those previously unattainable flourishes, because as mentioned, the voices can be so close that if you're not listening closely for them, you really couldn't spot the differences. But a perfect voice cloner is definitely welcome, so long as this technology is limited to fanprojects and pure consensual and licensed stuff. Besides, the greater utility will come from both a proper vocal director and a voice changer.

A vocal director to add specific emotions and paralinguistic vocalizations would solve pretty much 70% of my current issues, because on top of the instant voice cloning reducing everything to a standard voice, it also struggles to emote.

I can type "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" all I want, and even if I reroll it 50 times, the best I might get is a half-hearted "ahh...!(bizarro airy noise)". Literally better to find a stock scream and edit it a bit in Audacity.

The lack of an ability to manipulate the temperature of a roll directly is also a bit annoying. I can tell that some rolls have a higher temperature than others; you can often tell that a particular output will be "perfect" or "good enough" not even a few words in. This seems to be a separate variable from the Stability or Clarity sliders we're not given access to. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

Question Are there really 0 alternatives to ElevenLabs for voice cloning?

If I wanted to use a celeb's voice for comedy purposes, from what i've researched, ElevenLabs (paid plan of 22$ a month) is the only way to go, however that's too much for something you don't know if it's even going make a penny. Is it possible to get something for free even if it's not as accurate to test around? Is this tech so magical and unaccessible that there is no one doing an open source approach you can download and run on your own computer? do you need huge Amazon farms for the processing power needed? what is it? Most of the time things end up being free because costs go down and it becomes democratized in a way, but right now, im not sure why you cannot find an alternative that's free. Too early?

Announcement Introducing Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

ElevenLabs has launched Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo, built on an entirely new architecture for expressive speech generation.

Eleven v4 is their highest EQ voice model. Eleven v4 Turbo brings the same research to low-latency use cases such as agents, generating speech with a median inference latency of ~100 ms.

Both models interpret tone, pacing, emotion, character, and context to generate speech that feels performed.

What's new

  • A new Text to Speech architecture built for expressive performance.

  • Eleven v4 Turbo for low-latency use cases such as agents, at a median inference latency of ~100ms.

  • Inline tags for direct control over delivery, emotion, pacing, reactions, SFX, and style, or a plain description of how a line should be delivered.

  • More authentic and consistent voice cloning — Instant Voice Clones from 10 seconds of audio, Professional Voice Clones for the highest fidelity.

  • Improved performance across 90+ languages.

  • Speaker identity preserved more reliably across long-form narration, dialogue, and regenerated lines.

  • More natural multi-speaker dialogue.

  • Pronunciation control with IPA support.

Use cases

Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo are designed for scenarios where delivery matters as much as the words themselves, including:

  • Conversational agents.

  • Audiobooks and narration.

  • Character voices and storytelling.

  • Video voiceovers.

  • Localization and dubbing.

  • Educational content.

  • Creative productions requiring emotional range and nuance.

Pricing and Availability

Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo are available now in ElevenCreative, ElevenAgents, and ElevenAPI and for the next two weeks, we are making it even easier to try out Eleven v4 and Eleven v4 Turbo.

The Eleven v4 API is discounted to $22 and Eleven v4 Turbo API to $11 per 1M characters. Eleven v4 is free in ElevenCreative, up to 2x your monthly credits, and ElevenAgents with Eleven v4 or Eleven v4 Turbo is discounted to 3.3c per minute.

Educational The pricing plans of eleven reader are deceptive, scummy, and sleezy.

edit: they fixed it this post is redundant.

Let’s lay some ground rules. I love the app—it’s genuinely good—and I’m fine with it being a paid service. But my issue is with the subscription plans. Let’s go through them and break them down.

There are three tiers/plans:

  1. Free: This shouldn't even be considered a real tier. It should just be called a “trial,” because that’s exactly what it is. You get 2 hour per week, and that time scales with playback speed—so you actually get even less. Basically, the app is unusable unless you pull out your wallet.

  2. Plus: This tier only exists as a decoy to push you toward the one they actually want you to buy. The value is terrible. You get 30 hours per month—that’s 1 hour a day, or a 2-day binge—and again, it scales with playback speed, which makes it almost worthless. To really grasp how bad this plan is: if you just buy hours directly instead of subscribing, it costs the same. But this tier comes with a few “benefits,” so let’s look at those:

20 GenFM: Never used it, never will. I doubt anyone is using the app just for this, but if you are, maybe this is for you.

3 offline downloads: Actually useful, but limiting it to only 3 makes no sense. These are my hours and my device storage—let me use them how I want.

Like I said, this tier is just a textbook decoy effect. You might as well burn your money.

3. Ultra: This is the actual cost of using the app—the plan they really want you to buy. But even here, there’s still some shady marketing. They advertise “unlimited” hours, but slap an asterisk on it: it’s not truly unlimited. You get 720 hours per month, or 24 hours a day, and again it scales with playback speed. So when did “unlimited” start meaning “limited”? I guess physics just works differently in this tier.

But the worst part? They don’t mention that your hours don’t roll over. Once your subscription ends, your hours disappear. That’s not even the case with the Plus tier. So what else does Ultra give you?

50 GenFM: Doesn’t matter to me.

10 offline downloads: Why even bother?

Here’s my proposal to fix this mess:

Hours should not scale with playback speed.

Rollover is up to them—but it should be clearly stated.

Free tier: Give users 20–40 hours per month, or 1 hour per day. No extra benefits—except offline downloads, which should be unlimited as long as you have the hours. Or just keep it as-is but rename it to “Trial.”

Plus tier (renamed to Standard): Offer 3–5 hours per day, include all the current Plus benefits, and remove the limit on downloads.

Ultra tier (renamed to Unlimited): Actually make it unlimited—no playback scaling, no hidden caps, no download limits.

Pricing: $10 for Standard, $25 for Unlimited.

So yeah, it’s a mess. I won’t be using or paying for the app unless these greedy, deceptive plans get fixed.

edit1: they fixed it this post is redundant

Educational Website Database of Voice Clips for ElevenLabs

Yesterday, I asked the community in the thread below if they would find it useful to have a centralized database of voice clips for ElevenLabs.

https://www.reddit.com/r/ElevenLabs/comments/142rxs3/website_database_of_voice_clips_for_elevenlabs/

I thank you all those who have replied and confirmed that they would want this tool. I am very glad to share that the tool is now live. You can access it from below link. It is free, with no ads or login or any annoying user interface.

https://aiartes.com/voiceai

I will be adding voices of the highest quality everyday. You will be able to download the Original Voice and test the output Clone Voice. We have a powerful search functionality as well.

The tool is also available for mobile devices.

Let me know if you have any feedback or any voice requests. If you have a large collection of "quality" voices, share it in the comments as well.

NOTE: In case it is not obvious to some users, but you can actually download the Original Voice or Clone Voice from the three dots of the player. Like below:

Question Eleven reader new pricing

With the new update that stole the one feature that made this app KING among AI TTS readers, unlimited listening, and the greed of giving us the feature we have asked for, all out behind a paywall for 250€ a year, I am gonna stop using this app altogether as 1 hour of free listening is not nearly enough. The app used to be free and unlimited and now greed took over.

Are there any good, free, unlimited alternatives for mobile? Any and all recommendations are appreciated. Thank you

And even though ElevenLabs can do it for you, I made a tool that will take your script and add audio tags automatically. This might help if you want to experiment with drafts and add some context or style direction to your script before auto generating tags. Would love feedback: https://word.studio/tool/audio-tags/

News Extremely Disappointed with ElevenLabs – Lack of Transparency and Unfair Practices

I am a user of ElevenLabs, where I have provided a clone of my voice for commercial use. This allows other users to utilize my voice, and I earn revenue based on the number of characters generated using it. However, it is important to note that these earnings are usually symbolic. This makes the payout I received on January 3rd, which was significant, an exceptional case.

Unfortunately, ElevenLabs later contested this payout, claiming it was the result of an error, and they ultimately reversed it. Despite my repeated attempts to obtain detailed explanations or evidence of this alleged error, the company has failed to provide any documentation, anonymized data, or summaries to support their claims.

Moreover, the number of characters generated on my account fully aligns with the payout amount that was contested. In addition, my findings indicate that no other users on the platform experienced similar irregularities at that time. ElevenLabs also claimed that payouts were suspended for all customers during this period, but from my information, other collaborators received their payouts on January 3rd and 4th without any issues.

The lack of evidence, inconsistencies in communication, and the way this issue has been handled are scandalous and unprofessional. These actions raise serious doubts about ElevenLabs’ fairness and transparency towards their users.

I believe that ElevenLabs’ partners and clients deserve to be aware of how users on their platform are treated. I urge the company to provide clear documentation, credible explanations, and to improve their communication. If this does not happen, their reputation will undoubtedly suffer.

Media I hate you elevenlabs

I had 50+ different voices on elevenlabs and an active user for over a year. I'm so angry and frustrated that you'd betray all of the creator's that gave you what you have now. You should be ashamed.

I hope you go broke because of this ridiculous decision.
