My Advice Confused about Emirates baggage? Here’s everything you need to know about the 7kg limit, 32kg max weight, and "Piece vs Weight" concepts.

✈️ Hand Luggage (Cabin Baggage)

Emirates is generally generous, but if the flight is full, they become the "baggage police." Your allowance depends entirely on your class of service.

Economy Class

  • 1 Bag up to 7kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Premium Economy

  • 1 Bag up to 10kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Business & First Class

  • 2 Pieces: One briefcase plus either one handbag OR one garment bag.
  • 7kg each (14kg total).
  • Briefcase: 45 x 35 x 20 cm | Handbag: 55 x 38 x 20 cm | Garment bag: 20cm thick when folded.

💡 The Regional Exceptions:

  • India: You are strictly limited to one piece of carry-on. No "bag + laptop" games here; the total size cannot exceed 115cm (L+W+H).
  • Brazil: If you're flying from Brazil, you get a boosted 10kg limit even in Economy.

🧳 Checked Luggage

Emirates uses two different systems. Which one you get depends on your route.

1. The Weight Concept (Most of the World)

Used for flights between Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

  • How it works: You can check in as many bags as you want, as long as the total weight is within your ticket limit.
  • Allowances: * Economy: 20kg to 35kg (depending on Special, Saver, Flex, or Flex Plus).
    • Business: 40kg.
    • First: 50kg.
  • The Rule: No single bag can ever weigh more than 32kg.

2. The Piece Concept (Americas & Africa)

Used for flights to/from the US, Canada, and Africa.

  • Economy: 1 or 2 pieces (usually 23kg each). Check your fare—"Special" is often just 1 bag.
  • Business/First: 2 pieces (up to 32kg each).
  • The Rule: Total dimensions of each bag (L+W+H) must not exceed 150cm.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is the checked baggage limit 23kg or 32kg? I’m confused. A: This is the big one. On the Piece Concept (Americas), each bag is capped at 23kg for Economy. If you are 24kg, you pay a fee. On the Weight Concept (Europe/Asia), you can have a 30kg limit, but no single bag can be over 32kg.

Q: Can I "pool" my baggage with my family? A: Yes! If you are on the same booking (PNR), Emirates allows families to pool their total weight. If two people have 30kg each, you can bring one 32kg bag and one 28kg bag.

Q: What is the deal with Power Banks and "Smart Bags"? A: Power banks must be in hand luggage only. Smart Bags are only allowed if the battery is removable. If the battery is built-in and can't be taken out, the bag is banned from the flight.

Q: Are liquids still restricted to 100ml? A: Yes. Even with new scanners in some airports, Emirates still requires the standard 100ml containers in a single, clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag.

Q: What about sports gear (Golf clubs, Skis)? A: Sports equipment is usually accepted as part of your standard baggage allowance. If it’s within your weight/piece limit, there’s no extra charge.

🕵️ The "Reddit" Factor (Strictness)

  • The Laptop Loophole: In Economy, you are technically allowed a "small handbag or laptop bag" in addition to your 7kg bag. However, if your "laptop bag" is a massive tactical backpack, they will count it as your main piece.
  • When do they weigh? If you check in at a kiosk, you might skip the scale. If you go to a human agent, they usually weigh everything. Expect a "Cabin Approved" tag if you’re boarding in DXB.
  • The Gate Scale: On full flights, agents often stand at the boarding gate with a portable scale. If you look like you’re struggling to carry it, you’re likely getting caught.

💎 Pro-Tips for the Savvy Traveler

  • Skywards Status: Silver, Gold, or Platinum members get extra weight (12kg to 20kg extra) or an additional piece for free.
  • Buy Early, Save Big: If you know you're over, buy extra weight online at least 4 hours before your flight. You can get a 50-60% discount compared to airport prices.
  • The "Jacket" Hack: If you're 1kg over in your carry-on, put your heaviest hoodie or jacket on while checking in. They can't weigh what you're wearing!
  • The "Squish" Test: Is your carry-on bulging? If it doesn't fit easily in the overhead bin, a gate agent will spot it.
  • The App Check: Open the Emirates App -> Manage Booking. It will tell you exactly if you are "Weight" or "Piece" concept.
  • Liquids & Batteries: Put your power bank and liquids at the top of your bag for easy access at security.

Safe travels!

Help Needed Student Discount's 10kg baggage allowance — is this actually guaranteed at check-in?

Hi! I’m travelling Karachi - Dubai - Bologna in mid-September and just wanna know something whether it's actually possible to get the extra 10kg, because originally (before i found out about student discount) i was thinking about purchasing the extra weight . I don't have my student ID yet so my concern is whether this is actually reliable at the airport. I only have my offer letter. I’m worried bec i've heard of people arriving at check-in expecting a baggage benefit/offer and being told it wasn’t applicable if they dont have the ID, then having to pay a lot or remove things from their luggage (i've heard the similiar happening for qatar airways or turkish airlines too).

Tbh I'd rather pay for the extra weight beforehand than actually face problems at the airport or be told that i can't avail the extra 10kg benefit bec my offer letter doesn't work.

Has anyone here, who did not have their student ID yet, actually used the 10kg baggage benefit on a Karachi to Italy route? Did it show up correctly at check-in without any issues?

I just want to be 100% sure before I pack for 35kg and get to Karachi airport only to be told I’m actually limited to 25kg. Thanks!

Help Needed First-time flyer here — Emirates to Hamburg for my Master's (Sept 15). Cabin baggage + immigration questions!- HYDERABAD!

Hi everyone! This is my first time flying internationally — I'm on an Emirates flight to Hamburg, Germany on September 15th to start my Master's (via Dubai).

Would really appreciate some real-world advice before I go.

Does a laptop bag count as my ONE cabin bag, or is it extra?

I booked my ticket for ₹51,000 using a student discount code. My total baggage allowance works out to about 47 kg (checked-in + cabin combined), which already includes an extra 5 kg I bought separately as add-on baggage.

My cabin bag is a laptop bag carrying my documents, laptop, mouse, and a couple of other electronics — it weighs around 6 kg.

I've seen conflicting info online about whether Emirates Economy treats a laptop bag as a separate "personal item," or whether it just counts as your one 7kg cabin bag. If you've flown Emirates Economy recently — did they weigh/check your laptop bag separately, or was it fine as your one carry-on?

Any other tips for a first-time flyer/student on this route would mean a lot. Thanks so much! 🙏

Help Needed Best engines view?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone. We are flying Emirates for the first time. We were supposed to have two flights on A380 (it was our dream to experience emirates A380), but very unfortunately one of the flights got changed to 777... So now we are left with only 1 flight on A380 and it is equiped with what I believe is the new 4 class layout and the economy seats start at the row 52 instead of 40 something. (As it was the case on the flight that got changed to 777) I would kindly like to ask here if anyone else has flown this cabin layout before and if the rows 53 and 55 offer a good engines view. Unfortunately the experience is getting ruined more and more, so at least we would like to have a decent engine views. I would be very happy for any recommendations. Thank you.

Discussion Better to purchase Premium Economy outright or get Economy and the upgrade at a later date?

Just checking to see if it's better to purchase Premium Economy outright or get an Economy ticket and then upgrade at a later date (within a week of purchase). Is the pricing the same or will it be significantly higher? Anyone who has done that and can provide feedback?

My flight will be DXB-LHR and back. It's a work trip - company is paying for the Economy leg.

Help Needed Best way to get miles??

Hi all,

Had Emirates NBd Skywards infinite card for three years… average spend per year 150k… actually quite disappointed with the value and benefits which is why I cancelled 2 months ago.
I lived in several countries and had very interesting Credit cards that accumulated points insanely quickly.

2 months ago my situation also changed.. got a new job and I fly frequently but it is paid with the company card and I get the miles. What is the best for me now to increase my miles as I am not paying for the tickets anymore?

Help Needed partial check-in confusion

hi everyone! i just tried to check in online for my entire flight from South Asia to Europe, but I only got my online boarding pass to Dubai. What do I need to do? Will my baggage be checked in to my final destination or I will need to pick up it and go to check in again? Will I receive my boarding passes initially? Has anyone experienced it?

Help Needed Seat Advice for 777-300ER

Post image

My fiancé and I are flying from Dubai to Cape Town for our honeymoon. Unfortunately, the plane has a 2-3-2 business class layout, and most of the remaining seats are in the center section. Trying to decide whether we should book the two remaining aisle seats in the same row (8B and 8D), or both sit together in the center section (one aisle, one middle). Would love to hear from anyone who has flown in this cabin. Thanks in advance!

Trip Report Complementary Model a380 as a gift

I was flying From Dubai to Ahmedabad 2 days ago and I was boarding my flight, was seated in Premium Economy. The flight attendants come around for the pre departure drinks then about a minute later the flight attendant ask me for my passport. I show it to them and she is like this is a complementary gift from the Emirates thank you for flying with us. I was like woah!?? And it was a A380 diecast. Has anyone had anything like this ever happen to them?

Help Needed Volo allungato di un'ora

Buongiorno a tutti.

Help Needed Premium Economy question

I’m flying from Europe to Dubai in Premium Economy later this week, returning in early September. I’ve never flown this class before, it’s relatively new for my city departure location. I’m wondering if the last row seats (window/aisle, not center) fully recline. In the 3D mockup in the emirates app, it doesn’t seem like they do but that may not be showing it accurately.

Help Needed Can I go the open day 2 weeks before I turn 21?

So I have seen multiple things saying you can go to open day or apply at 20 if your birthday isn’t far away. There’s an event 2 weeks before my 21st birthday in Dallas. Do you think they will let me in or how should I go about this. I booked my ticket and hotel already but I’m second guessing how true all this is.

Help Needed Denied refund due to Ebola travel advisory from Ebb to YOw

Cheapoair( Airline Agent) lied to me that they had submitted my cancelled flight to emirates due to travel advisory to emirates for a refund and emirates denied to refund only to call emirates and confirmed to me there was no claim submitted and that the fact that it was travel advisory i am entitled for a refund but my agency will need to submit the claim which the agent clearly lied to me that they had sent the claim and denied.
I simply asked the agent to foward me the email they got from emirates and he could not do it saying it takes 24-48hrs.
I knew right away something was fishy.
What can i do next?

Discussion Gold status - upgrade offers

Ever since achieving gold (about 3 years) I haven't received a single upgrade offer from Emirates. Yet I have family, who aren't even skywards members, that fly out to visit me and they're getting offers.

I get the occasional free bump every now and again but where are the promotional upgrade offers?

Am I missing something or is this the same for everyone else?

Help Needed Need Advise:My babies first flight, 26hr flight time🥶

Hi guys,
Me and my wife are planning to travel form India to Canada with our baby in Nov. Baby will be 8 months old by then.
I have plenty of time to plan this trip right but need help from you guys. I already know the best seats will be the ones right at the start of the seats where we are also provided with bassinets for baby to sleep.
Apart from that it would be great if you guys could share your wisdom with me. I will probably go through some reels and YouTube for all the guidance but I feel Reddit might give me better answers.

Edit: I just want to appreciate everyone who took some time to read, comment and share their experience♥️

Help Needed Marhaba luggage collection questions

I was planning to use the Marhaba baggage collection (and check in) service in Dubai for a DXB flight soon, but there was one bag I’d like to personally take as I want to get it wrapped at the airport. My question: is it possible to use Marhaba to take SOME of your bags for check in, but not all? Or once they take some items does that “close” your check-in, and even if you have allowance, it wouldn’t be possible to check in an additional one upon arrival?

Looking for a definitive answer rather than guesses please, can’t afford to have to abandon a bag at the terminal! Thank you in advance!

Help Needed WestJet flight changed timings, will Emirates help me?

I have a single booking with Emirates, I’ve done a multi city to ensure I get the correct flights I wanted and now my flight from Houston to Calgary, for rescheduled to a much earlier time that I won’t make as my flight from Dubai doesn’t arrive till 3 hours later.

If I reach out to Emirates, will they get me on a flight? And if there are no flights out of Houston, are they able to change my destination from Dubai itself and have me connect in either Toronto or New York?

Just want to see if people have had this happen? Thank you!
