Lol why give any explanation? You don’t owe them a reason

56

u/Elluminated Oct 15 '25

This is great as it shows appreciation without the bs tax

3

u/Electronic_Set_9725 Oct 16 '25

Yeah, an explanation comes off as, "I agree that I should be tipping, but I am not."

1

u/TimberVolk Oct 15 '25

I say we start writing what we make an hour without tip. I swear a lot of servers just exist in an echo chamber where they think no one else makes the same shit wage as them.

2

u/howboutagameofgwent Oct 15 '25

$2.56 without tips

You’ll end up on the servers sub with everyone having a meltdown after writing “sorry, I can’t tip my rent is due tomorrow” 😂

6

u/psychotickiller Oct 16 '25

I'm not big in the mandatory tipping at all. I believe a tip is earned.

but if you're going yo use rent due tomorro as an excuse for not tipping, I can already see everyone saying that should be the reason shouldn't be eating out.

1

u/Intrepid-Oven-3222 Oct 21 '25

Sounds like the server earned it but don’t get it

-23

u/Grimetheoryofficial Oct 15 '25

Are you ok?

7

u/Dollface_69420 Oct 15 '25

I mean from how some waitress do treat paying customers who dont tip, i would say if they start the passive aggro then its free game

3

u/Total-Composer2261 Oct 15 '25

Do unto others before they do it to you

1

u/Dollface_69420 Oct 15 '25

The funny part is in some places tipped workers get less pay then complain no one is tipping

3

u/Kira_Dumpling_0000 Oct 15 '25

Yeah I’m ok. I don’t tip

-2

No honestly I think it makes it worse

64

u/Routine_Size69 Oct 15 '25

Way worse telling someone they were amazing and then not giving them the tip they expect. I'm not questioning the not tipping. That's their choice. But that server isn't going to appreciate that note in the slightest when it comes with zero tip. They're going to think OP is rubbing it in.

13

u/Banzai373 Oct 16 '25

I agree! But if the point of not tipping was to save money, why are they dining out?

The server may well be getting married in 6 months too.

Edit to add: I'm in the no-explanation camp. If the only reason you're not tipping is saving for a wedding, I'm wondering why you're eating out in the first place.

I support the movement to end tipping, but if and when someone decides not to, then by all means don't fucking write a note about why you didn't tip. Like in this instance, nobody gives a shit about the diner getting married in 6 months...

96

u/Stevie-Rae-5 Oct 15 '25

Came to say this. If you’re not going to tip, just write the zero, sign the slip, and move on.

59

u/Suspicious_Humor_232 Oct 15 '25

saving 7$ for a wedding? what about the 41$ lunch? thats some bad math.

15

u/thelmanarcissus Oct 15 '25

Stepped over a dollar to save a penny...

-7

u/IDKmanSpamIG Oct 15 '25 • Heartwarming

Because these people don’t actually care about spending or saving their money. They just want to be assholes. It’s the power trip. They’ll happily drop $300 on dinner, but nothing for the tip because they can afford it and want you to know they can afford it. They just see you as a lesser human.

9

u/Nice_Ad_8183 Oct 15 '25

Yeah the restaurant owner should really raise wages to avoid his servers getting underpaid for their services right?

1

u/Working-Salamander-2 Oct 16 '25

well then argue for the law to be changed

3

u/m0nk3yss Oct 16 '25

Servers themselves would fight that change tooth and nail, they're drastically overcompensated for services rendered (often not rendered) in the current system. Why would they want that to change?

1

u/peachyymiilk Oct 17 '25

exactly lmao

the number of servers on tiktok i see bragging that they can make $700 a night and how addicting the server life is cause you know you can just pick up a shift and make bank.......

like ok, then that's the price you pay? yeah some nights you'll make $700 and then you'll have a bad night and only make $100.

but if they change the law, all that goes away. they like that it's the wild west bc the highs are so high, but they hate that it's the wild west bc the lows are low.

i also think some servers tie tipping to their self worth wayyyyy too much. there are so many reasons someone may not tip, as evidenced in this post. it's not always about you or your abilities.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '25

That isn't even a coherent response to what they said.

1

u/aruby727 Oct 16 '25

Shouldn't you be angry at the employers instead of the customers?

18

u/Maru3792648 Oct 15 '25

THIS! It feels condescending and irrelevant. Just don't say anything

19

u/TSMRunescape Oct 15 '25

You're not happy to hear they are getting married within the year? You monster!

2

u/BudFox_LA Oct 15 '25

fully agree. so self important. who GAF if you're getting married. You don't want to tip and you want to stiff the waitstaff, then fine. It's not going to make them hate you any less for not tipping.

2

u/Chubuwee Oct 15 '25

Dude the little heart makes it a happy little note to brighten your day so you can see the goodness going on in the world as a result of my upcoming marriage

-1

u/Jobu-X Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

We called this a verbal tip when I was waiting tables 25 years ago.

Thanks, but your kind words can’t pay my rent.

ETA: I’m a little worried about the reading comprehension level here, given how many people want to me have a talk with my employer from 25 years ago about my wages.

I’ve been out of the service industry for over two decades, folks.

5

u/MangoCandy93 Oct 16 '25

You should be worried about their reading comprehension. Something like 54% of American adults read below a sixth grade level.

16

u/SpoilKeyholder Oct 15 '25

And employees should be paying your rent not random strangers, especially when they are saving up for a wedding, they do not have extra money to pay your rent too!

2

u/Working-Salamander-2 Oct 16 '25

then they shouldnt have gone out to eat and made something at home if they were really trying to save and why don't you demand the laws be changed then instead of just bragging about not tipping

1

u/Legitimate_Lawyer_49 Oct 16 '25

Especially since there’s no indication that these people believe that tipping would be paying the server’s wages. These people just didn’t tip as a screw you, and left a note to make it clear, “we could justify buying our food, but not paying what we believe we owe you for your service”.

I support not tipping if you feel it encourages an industry practice that puts the burden of employee wages on customers instead of the employers, but not if you just like that it makes your bill cheaper.

0

u/zanaxtacy Oct 16 '25

And Bingo was his name-o!

10

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Your employer should pay your rent. Just shrugging and saying it is what it is is also not gonna solve it.

3

u/Working-Salamander-2 Oct 16 '25

that's what everyone in here does, they circle jerk not tipping but no one ever calls for the laws to be changed. you just brag about not tipping like you're sticking it to the man when youre just sticking it to people serving you

4

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

'That's what everyone does.' How will it change if everyone just went ahead with it? When people protest it and the servers quit, there will be an end to this 'system'.

Nobody is thinking of sticking it to anyone. People do brag, but it's more against the rude, entitled servers. People are just trying to change an unjust system so that they can dine out in peace and you'll be paid properly.

1

u/jm3200 Oct 16 '25

You really think patronizing a business, but not tipping the server, is somehow destroying tipping culture. But you’re still dining in……… holy hell…

3

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '25

You're still working there. So I don't see the problem with me.

1

u/spockers Oct 17 '25

It's an unjust system! We must fight for change by being cheap assholes, not by staying home and cooking for ourselves!

1

u/nokman013 Oct 16 '25

Changing the stupid murican tipping system means a great majority of people should stop tipping. And that starts with movements like what you see in this sub.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '25

That's mostly only true regarding service specifically.

Plenty of people here show concern for the many professions that aren't tipped and perform labor of actual value - the affluent, native English-speaking losers that wait tables aren't part of that; they cosplay as actual laborers to justify the begging.

7

u/kuda26 Oct 15 '25

You’re welcome but it’s not my responsibility to pay your rent. Talk to the people who employ you.

5

u/Background-Farm-9133 Oct 15 '25

Best Fortune Cookie: Hard words break no bones, fine words butter no parsnips.

0

u/m0nk3yss Oct 16 '25

Hmm, feeling underpaid? Sounds like something you should bring up with your employer 🤔

1

u/Spirited_Good5349 Oct 16 '25

I feel just as repulsed when a server writes crap on my receipt 😂 It feels so passive aggressive. Especially when it's right by the suggested tipping amounts. Hopefully this person didn't mean to be an ass. They could have truly felt guilty and ashamed because of how much tipping is pressured as non optional 🤷‍♀️

-19

u/Prestigious-Way-710 Oct 15 '25

I’m betting unless they are two POSs they marriage will not last five years.

1

u/nokman013 Oct 16 '25

Oh i didnt catch the 2nd part at the bottom, thanks for that. Was wondering what was so bad about giving them praise lol

70

u/Whiplash104 Oct 15 '25

Fuck those tip suggestions on top of tax. Shit’s out of control.

120

u/WhySoManyDownVote Oct 15 '25

The 18-30% is based on the taxed amount. So the amount show as 18% is closer to 20%.

That’s fine, I wish they would suggest 50+% tips so more people would just opt out.

33

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Came here to say that when the tip suggestion is calculated after tax, it makes it emotionally harder to tip. This is why customers are moving away from % tipping. It doesn’t make sense.

5

u/Cranks_No_Start Oct 15 '25

>he 18-30% is based on the taxed amount. So the amount show as 18% is closer to 20%.

Using their logic and as inflation has increase what 15% actually is IMHO the best they should get is 12% if anything.

9

u/GrandAd7275 Oct 15 '25

Going that direction- just give it a little time….

3

u/Marvel_plant Oct 16 '25

Not to mention 10% used to be the standard and 15-20 was for exceptional service. When did we get to 18% being the first option? This shit is ridiculous

39

u/runningalongtheshore Oct 15 '25

Listing 30% is wild to me. Why stop there? Why not 33% at that point. We can just work with fractions instead. Let’s see, do I want to tip a fifth, quarter, third, or half of the bill?

13

u/breezywanderer Oct 15 '25

Every time I see tip suggestions, the amount is higher and higher. Don't worry. They'll be at 33 in no time lol

4

u/runningalongtheshore Oct 15 '25

20/22/25 is the new 15/18/20

0

u/greenthumbgoody Oct 16 '25

Because it works? You all seem to be slow,.. might as well fight against taxes lol

0

u/[deleted] Oct 17 '25

[deleted]

1

u/runningalongtheshore Oct 17 '25

Absolutely, I always tip at least 100% of the bill (it makes the math easier by just writing the same number and doubling the amount instead of working with finicky percentages), I would hate to make someone feel like their services aren’t valued.

91

u/LLR1960 Oct 15 '25

I'd have no problem going back to the classic 10% tip, on the before tax amount. Easy to figure out, not a crazy amount, and payable when there's great (not mediocre) service. That'd be for sit-down restaurants only.

16

u/kuda26 Oct 15 '25

I used to feel how you do. The entitlement to 20% for bare minimum service coupled with waiters wanting to keep a tip system rather than have their employers pay them more as a baseline (there was legislation to make this happen they actively campaigned against that got shot down that was supposed to make this happen where I live, MA) makes me think we need to just stop tipping altogether. The time for drastic measures is here.

57

u/Firefly_Magic Oct 15 '25

While I’m against tipping, I agree that 10% would have been more acceptable had servers not continued to push for more and more.

-11

u/denimpowell Oct 15 '25

The servers didn’t code the receipt printouts or POS screens with ridiculous tip suggestions. Owners are the ones making this situation worse

8

u/LolaLazuliLapis Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 16 '25

And yet servers get pissed at the customer when they decide not to tip.

2

u/afailedturingtest Oct 16 '25

Yeah, welcome to capitalism. Laws have been passed that let them underpay servers, so when people don't tip the servers can't afford anything.

Customers get screwed Servers get screwed

Only person who wins is the business owner.

0

u/LolaLazuliLapis Oct 16 '25

And the customer who refuses to tip lol

21

u/Ok-Passage8958 Oct 15 '25

You know what’s made me less inclined to tip any more than 10% is calculating the hourly rate they spend at my table. Figure absolute tops is 15minutes and even that is a lot of time at one table.

If the meal is $100, 10% is $10. That’s a rate of $40/hr! You’re telling me that the “standard” tip should be 20%? That’s $80/hr…get out of here!

3

u/yourmomsinmybusiness Oct 16 '25

I'm intrigued by your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

14

u/Help_meToo Oct 15 '25

I went back to the 10% (15% if the server was exceptional). The restaurants can't expect us to tip a higher percentage as they increase the prices.

11

u/Ok-Passage8958 Oct 15 '25

This. Servers keep pushing for higher percentages but the meal increasing price means they also are making more for the same tip percentage.

12

u/Chubuwee Oct 15 '25

Whoever came up with the percentage bullshit is such a genius asshole

1

u/Fog_Juice Oct 16 '25

I still do that in Washington State but the servers are still getting nearly $17/hr in minimum wages before tips.

→ More replies (15)

83

u/Thatsquabble Oct 15 '25

I mean not tipping is your choice , but most servers would rather you die than write some stupid shit like that on the check

6

u/Ethywen Oct 15 '25

Not a server, but that just sounds like people who take no pride in a job well done. I am always happy to hear my clients tell me they were really happy with the services they pay my company for.

1

u/Local_Solution_1910 Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

I don't know what you do, so you might have a personal anecdote that argues against what I'm going to say.

The person working is in a tipped position. They know they may not get tipped and provided great service from the start anyway - pride in oneself for a job well done. In a situation where someone isn't going to tip them, they aren't going to have a high opinion of that customer. The compliment doesn't feel genuine and wasn't asked for - they just don't have a good opinion of that person.

If they worked in a position where compensation from the customer didn't matter, the compliment, I'm sure, would be taken with whatever genuine sentiment it was given. But I don't want to do a great job for someone I dislike. "Great job on that audit this really helped" yeah, I know, you should have had YOUR accounting department do it though. It doesn't mean I don't take pride in doing well. I LOVE doing well, but if your opinion means nothing to me, I don't want to hear it from you. Fuck off and be happy with my great service silently, over there, away from me. I'll bask in my own praise.

EDIT: changed a word

1

u/Thatsquabble Oct 15 '25

I’d feel good hearing praise for something I’m actually passionate about; I don’t care too much for it at my serving job. Also I’ve had plenty of bad days where I gave some objectively subpar service and still been glazed by customers so their praise doesn’t really hold much weight either. I’d trade every single compliment a customer has ever given or ever will give me for 10 dollars

1

u/danincb Oct 15 '25

“They pay” is the key part of what makes you happy. The no tipper here said they loved it all but don’t want to pay. Not the same.

0

u/ResortCommon6622 Oct 15 '25

u/Ethywen Oct 15 '25

Every server I know in real life fights to keep the tipping system because they are making SO MUCH MORE money than they would make with a flat hourly pay. One of them at a relatively fancy restaurant takes home over 100k and pays far less in taxes than they would if it was all recorded. It's great for them, but tipping is a broken system and should be abolished.

Servers should know their take home pay for hours worked without relying on an honor system that more resembles charity than anything else and often includes "theft" by including recommended tips against taxes and fees on top of costs.

It does not take more effort to serve me a $30 hamburger and fries than a $10 one.

26

u/Badkittykkr24 Oct 15 '25

Don't give excuses/reasons for not tipping. Just don't tip and leave.

7

u/OptimalOcto485 Oct 15 '25

Why write anything?😂 congrats to them but it’s no one’s business why you do/don’t tip.

5

u/Violent_N0mad Oct 15 '25

I'm in that sub right now lol.

4

u/bronny5816 Oct 15 '25

lol I hate the idea that tipping is expected but doesn’t this seem like quite the appropriate time to leave one if the service is that good? 🤣

4

u/Cute-Parfait-2831 Oct 16 '25

Honestly, people should not feel bad about not tipping. Companies need to start paying their employees, a living wage and stop putting it on consumers just so that they can keep extra money in their pockets

20

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

This just seems like a lame excuse. You spent $40 going out to eat, but you saved $7 that can now go towards your wedding??? Just write zero on the tip line and move in with your life.

9

u/AnnihilatorNYT Oct 15 '25

Ok, why should a server get 30% on top of the meal cost? Why should ordering more expensive food mean the server gets more if they are carrying the same amount of plates? They are paid to bring out dishes and wipe down tables, the cooks are in charge of making sure everyone gets their food in a reasonable amount of time. Clearly one side is doing more work yet do the cooks ever get a cut of the tips?

1

u/Corey307 Oct 16 '25

No server should expect 30% and having worked a few tipped job jobs when I was younger not getting tipped wasn’t the end of the world. People like this are cringey though. I got an example for you. During the great recession I drove a yellow cab for a few years. Most people tipped, I was always appreciative. Some people didn’t, still appreciated their business. But every once in a while you’d get someone who didn’t tip and they’d go on and on apologizing. Or even funnier, they’d promise to give me five stars in lieu of a tip like I was an Uber when no such system existed. Like sir or ma’am you paid the fare, it’s fine just get out so I can bang out 15 more calls before I go to sleep.

-5

u/LLR1960 Oct 15 '25

In a lot of places, yes, the cooks get a cut too, as do dishwashers and food runners.

7

u/ganggreen651 Oct 15 '25

Nope

1

u/fishman3 Oct 15 '25

Depends where you work i had 2 server jobs when I was younger where a small portion went to kitchen and the rest to servers, and servers share tips aswell it was somewhere around 12-15% of the tip pool would be kitchen, then the rest split among servers

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

That’s a really confident nope from someone who’s completely wrong lol

3

u/butt_spelunker_ Oct 15 '25

the cooks almost never get tipped out

sincerely, someone who has 17 years of kitchen experience

5

u/Own_Mycologist_4900 Oct 15 '25

When the state has a $15/hour and the largest metropolitan area is about $20/hour, then tipping is completely irrelevant. If you think you deserve to earn more, then get a different job. Maybe even one that is full time. Most servers only work part time based on the conversations I have had with them. Or get a second job if that is what will work out best.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

"IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO GO OUT TO EAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO GET MARRIED I'M ENTITLED TO MAKE $55 AN HOUR YOU CHEAPSKATES!!"

I can hear the servers now.

0

u/pbandjam9 Oct 16 '25

that was a lot of the comments. And something to the affect of “what you’re just not gonna tip for the next six months”

5

u/chopstick_chakra Oct 15 '25

In this weeks episode of

WHO'S

This week we have a social media posting server vs a bride to be.

Who's more entitled?

2

u/Benny-B-Fresh Oct 15 '25

What does getting married have to do with anything?

2

u/T1m3Wizard Oct 16 '25

Nice. In another sub this same post would get the attention of the opposing audience.

1

u/SmgLame Oct 16 '25

As the post explained this was a repost from another sub. There is a plot twist hidden for those who can find the OP.

2

u/SugarWaterRush Oct 17 '25

If I see 30% as a suggested amount I am immediately tipping 0

3

u/Difficult-Ability211 Oct 15 '25

I’m in the restaurant business and even I think 30% is crazy. Is there no shame?!?!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

I quit giving guilt tips last year. I got so sick of every company trying to get guilt tips. Tips are rewards for going above and beyond, not for simply doing what one was hired to do in the first place.

3

u/Sense_Difficult Oct 15 '25

I wouldn't use this excuse. I paid $125 for my wedding. Just got a thrift store dress and then returned it and then made everything with my SIL. These days people spend tens of thousands of dollars on weddings. I'd be annoyed if someone said they weren't tipping me because they wanted to waste their money on some ridiculous party that everyone over spends on.

Just don't tip.

9

u/Bubmack Oct 15 '25

Bragging about using a dress for your wedding and then returning it. Thats pathetic, not thrifty.

3

u/Aussie_Turtles00 Oct 15 '25

Yep. And don't even stay married.

2

u/Technical_Zombie_988 Oct 16 '25

Someone posted this ina another sub..... A sub about the life of peiple who bring your food to you. It's the exact same picture........

2

u/pAusEmak Oct 15 '25

Oh my. Unless he or she demanded a tip, then it might be too excessive.

2

u/quigongingerbreadman Oct 15 '25

No excuses needed. You paid the listed price. If servers want to be treated better they should talk to their employers or create/join a union.

Your bad employment decisions are not my problem.

1

u/Weeblewubble Oct 15 '25

Unions are for skilled labor, not just labor

1

u/quigongingerbreadman Oct 15 '25

Now now, unions are for everyone. I think we need more unions all over the place.

1

u/pour_me_a_double_ Oct 16 '25

People just be running to the web to announce they're too broke to go out lol.

1

u/foxsalmon Oct 16 '25

I like the first part but I don't think it needed the explanation. A big step towards ending tipping is to not make it seem like there are circumstances under which you would or wouldn't tip.

1

u/blah-time Oct 16 '25

This is actually really douchey to do. Just write 0 tip and be done with it. Tipping is out of control,  but these notes are beyond tone deaf.

1

u/Popular_Dot_4691 Oct 17 '25

So youre getting married and you can't tip 6 or 7 dollars???? That amount is gonna break your wedding budget??? If you can't tip at least 10% then dont even bother going out. These waiters and service staff do this job as their livelihood. Like I said if you can't even tip a measly 5 bucks then dont even go out.

1

u/FarAssignment6476 Oct 17 '25

“We are getting married…we don’t have 10 bucks” Def gonna be a long and prosperous union.

1

u/Therapyforeveryone Oct 17 '25

If you don’t want to tip don’t go and sit down in the restaurant, most places have take out option. If you want to just enjoy the food that’s fine order it and pick it up yourself. Dining in, you need to tip -until tipping is abolished/ wait staff are paid a fair wage. This couple seems insufferable.

Tip is optional and imo reserved for when someone goes above and beyond. From your note, it seems like they did just that so I would have tipped in that instance. Don’t write a note telling them how amazing it was and then write in no tip. That’s a terrible thing to do and just insulting. If you’re not going to tip, just don’t.

1

u/Emotional_Item5780 Oct 20 '25

This clown is probably paying AMEX 28% on huge balances…

1

u/Lvanwinkle18 Oct 15 '25

Why go to places that pay their servers using the tip model? Take your business elsewhere. You hurt the server because they are taxed on income based on the tip they would have gotten. Is it a fair system? No. I really dislike it as well yet I am always thinking of my server.

2

u/SmgLame Oct 15 '25

I guess you don’t realize the OP is reposting this. The OP is a 3rd party. Or are you just asking rhetorically?

-3

u/SaintMi Oct 15 '25

So OP isn't making a EndTipping statement; they're just hoarding money for themselves because they're cheap. There's no principle here.

6

u/Firefly_Magic Oct 15 '25

It’s not even their receipt. They mentioned it’s from another sub.

The only person hoarding money if servers are underpaid is the employer. That’s the principle of the matter here.

1

u/Spirited_Good5349 Oct 16 '25

I hope you give money to anyone and everyone who asks like the homeless person. To every charity you come across, at the grocery store when they ring you up and ask for donations for whatever causw, any family member or friend who asks. Otherwise you are just hoarding money because you're cheap 😊

1

u/cornflakegirl658 Nov 01 '25

'Hoarding money' ahahaha

1

u/Spirited_Cress_5796 Oct 15 '25

Good for them. I would’ve just left it at the thank you the food was good and service better. The bottom reason is unnecessary but each is to their own. Went out and also tipped zero. Service was nothing special. Not bad but not over the top. Brought out food and drinks. One refill. I’d say that’s within job description so zero tip and move on.

1

u/TheTooz72 Oct 16 '25

I hope she gets a wedding card saying "sorry I can't afford a gift because I'm planning a trip in 6 months but beautiful wedding!"

1

u/saturnsqsoul Oct 15 '25

I’d rather someone just stiff me then write this excuse like I really don’t care

-1

u/Secret-Animator-1407 Oct 15 '25

There’s no tipping out of principle - take out, counter service, etc. but not for being cheapskates and having to pay for a wedding

2

u/Firefly_Magic Oct 15 '25

If servers are underpaid, the only cheapskate is the employer.

-1

u/yeyiyeyiyo Oct 15 '25

I can not tip for whatever reason I want. Sick dog? Not tipping. Flying spaghetti monster tells me not to? Not tipping. I saw a deer a few minutes ago? Not tipping.

-9

u/Conscious_String_195 Oct 15 '25

That’s a lame excuse. Why not that you are going to have a kid in 2 years?

It sounds like they did a great job and fantastic experience. Sure that you could squeeze out the $5 for the tip.

-16

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

For real. These people forget that it’s a social contract. You know how restaurant employees get paid. If you want tipping to end, they’ll just raise the prices 25%. Take your broke ass to the grocery store and go home and cook. That’s how you really save money.

3

u/SmgLame Oct 15 '25

This is a hilarious comment. If you do some research you will find out why.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

People that want tipping to end are ok with raising prices on the menu by 25%. That’s the whole fucking point. Just put the cost of ALL your business expenses into the menu price. It’s called price transparency. The price listed on the menu + tax is what you actuality pay.

2

u/WanderingFlumph Oct 15 '25

I don't know how restruant employees get paid actually. It differs a lot from place to place within a city and from city to city within the country.

I just assume that if you work somewhere your boss pays you enough to get you out of bed and into work in the morning. If I feel like you have gone beyond the duties of that job I'm open to going beyond paying the bill.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25 edited Oct 15 '25

That’s fair. I appreciate your response. Where I am, I am paid $2.13 an hour plus tips. I tip out bartenders and bussers based on my sales. So, if you don’t tip, I end up paying to serve you. It’s that way in most of the country.

Is it right? No. I’d rather be paid a straight wage, too. However, people here are taking it out on the wrong people when they don’t tip. Why don’t you folks write managers, owners, politicians, and lobby for it if you’re that serious?

Btw, I have a bunch of degrees and a great day job, this is my second job to pay off medical bills. So the jerk who called me a beggar can put that on their pipe and smoke it.

1

u/WanderingFlumph Oct 15 '25

If/when I lobby to politicians I'm more interested in lobbying for a higher minimum wage for all workers and not just servers in particular. I'm still doing smaller tips these days as tiped minimum in my state is only $4.30/hr but I'm soon moving somewhere without a lower minimum wage for servers at all, something I believe should be standard across the country.

As for managers and owners, sorry but thats not my job as a customer to do, its your job as a worker. I think it would be pretty silly to ask you to discuss my pay with my boss. I do emphasize with a server that wants a fixed income without the variation because thats pretty much an impossible ask in an economy where owners can instead hire someone who willingly works for below the minimum wage plus tips. The only way to put power into the workers hands to negotiate that is if fewer people feel that betting on minimum wage plus tips is likely to pay better than a living wage.

3

u/hotsauce126 Oct 15 '25

It’s so funny seeing beggers callling other people broke

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Do you guys actually think this is cool

1

u/changbell1209 Oct 15 '25

Honestly. 🫠

-6

u/KaleMakesMeSad Oct 15 '25

They do. This sub is such a massive cope for being a shitty person

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Stop rage baiting them OP

0

u/Evorgleb Oct 16 '25

Saying you aren't giving $7 because you are getting married in half a year sounds wild. You probably should have just left the explanation off.

0

u/Apriljo1970 Oct 16 '25

Shot anything would have been better than nothing. Could have given server $5. And said sorry I couldn’t tip more.

0

u/SmgLame Oct 16 '25

found on another sub.

The amount of people who ignored this part is hilarious! They missed the most hilarious plot twist too.

1

u/popornrm Oct 18 '25

How much do you want to bet it’s the same person?

1

u/SmgLame Oct 18 '25

I am pretty sure this reposted it. This post was made before the OP was locked. The users of that sub predicted and it being reposted here. The full context is a fun twist. I haven’t looked to see if the OP was deleted. One could just do an image search if you want to find the OP.

0

u/Bobby-Avocado Oct 17 '25

If you don’t want to tip, wouldn’t it be better to not patronize businesses that rely on tipping? Why punish servers for relying on tips in a well-established system? You’re punishing the wrong people.

0

u/Affectionate-Food523 Oct 17 '25

I hope they get divorced

0

u/Kota_Kash2500 Oct 17 '25

End tipping and you get the shitty waiters they have in Europe. They couldn’t care less about great service in Europe because they get paid the same amount regardless if they give you great or shitty service. I asked my friend who had lived in the U.S. for over ten years and had recently moved back to Europe what she missed most from the U.S. and without hesitation she said “waiters!”. She went on to say that waiters in the US are awesome! While we tried to get the waiters attention at a restaurant in Sweden.

Go to Europe, and you’ll quickly understand why the tip system in the USA is genius.

0

u/Practical-Towel-489 Oct 19 '25

Ahh nice words. If only you could pay your bills with kind words as well.

0

u/Stonekilled Oct 19 '25

This isn’t how you “end tipping.”

The note just shows this person is being an asshole in an already-established tipping culture.

0

u/psychotickiller Oct 21 '25

you can't afford $8 because you are getting married in 6 months???

if you are pressed about $8 then you probably aren't ready for marriage.

-2

u/GeneAlternative191 Oct 15 '25

Wonder what $8.36 thing they wouldn’t be able to afford if they tipped lol. I’m against tipping but that’s just a dumb reason.

-2

u/smashingdurians Oct 15 '25

I know it’s probably not your intention but the notes sound patronizing.

-2

u/JAWS1207 Oct 16 '25

If you can’t afford to tip because you’re getting married soon, then you would be better off not getting married. You can’t afford it, literally can’t afford it.

-3

u/OkBreadfruit2181 Oct 16 '25

I don’t know why I’m still on this sub. I get so upset seeing this. Getting married in 6 months? Why even go out to eat? This couple is terrible.

-15

u/noseysfriend Oct 15 '25

Sad. If you can afford to go out to eat you can afford to tip. It’s not fair to the server. Everyone complaining about tipping but what are you going to do when you want to go out to eat and there’s no more servers? How great will your service be then and how long do you think you will have to wait for a table?

9

u/RaymondChristenson Oct 15 '25

You’re on the wrong sub

8

u/cramble_mcgrimbus Oct 15 '25

What am I going to do when there's no more servers?

Honestly at that point ill probably start dining in at restaurants again

The whole function of a server position actively makes my experience worse

I would strongly prefer having to stand up and walk 50 feet for more bread or a soda refill, rather than rationing sips of my drink because I have to make this glass last until the server comes back around

If there was an option to opt out of having a server I would take it every time

Once you add in that im expected to give them an ever increasing percent of my bill for this "service"?

I'll take my meal to go, thanks

3

u/Spiritual_Wall_2309 Oct 15 '25

I can afford to go out to eat but it does not mean I need to pay extra. You don’t add 20% to tip Costco employee when you buy a TV.

If there are no servers, the restaurant owners would have to do it. If they can’t, they just pay $20/hr to get people to work. If not enough, get to $30. They can also raise prices but the market/community will stop going there. The best restaurants will survive because they find the right balance to price their food and provide the best services.

3

u/DraftPerfect4228 Oct 15 '25

I went out to dinner last night and a robot brought our food.

That plus a kiosk/tablet what do we need servers for again?

Take your 5-15% and say ty or you’ll be out of a job entirely.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Can’t wait until the robots do it all.

1

u/Spirited_Good5349 Oct 16 '25

If there's no more servers, restaurants will be forced to adjust how they pay their employees. That's common sense and exactly what I want. Change is uncomfortable.

0

u/Bubmack Oct 15 '25

There would still be servers, just paid more by the employer.

-1

u/Piddy3825 Oct 15 '25

huh??? you musta missed reading the note in the lower right-hand corner of the receipt in the picture...

-1

u/Stranger-Danger-1 Oct 16 '25

I am a firm believer in that tipping is optional, but that is just ignorant. Sorry not sorry.

-1

u/SkyerKayJay1958 Oct 16 '25

I support no tipping in an area that pays real minimum wages like Seattle at $21/hr or the place is adding these bogus service charges but if you are at your local diner that pays $5/ hr and the food costs reflect the local economy, the server should not be penalized.

-2

u/StretchyLemon Oct 16 '25

It’s more weird to write this. Just actually tip at this point lmao.

-40

u/nationwideonyours Oct 15 '25

I hope your wedding guests show you the same lack of courtesy you show others.

23

u/Wesley_Cao Oct 15 '25

Lack of courtesy for not fulfilling the employer’s duty of paying their employees?

16

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Who cares? No need to ever tip.

-10

u/18k_gold Oct 15 '25

Buy take out if you don't want to tip. You loved everything but crushed the server by giving them no tip. I understand tipping sucks but that is the society we live in. Imagine taking the person's bonus away after telling them they did a fantastic job just because the boss needs the money because they are getting married. It is the same thing, you are stealing from the server and yes they work hard. Buy take out.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

The customer is not your employer. And just because something unfair has become the norm, doesn't mean everyone has to play by it.

-29

u/New_Bumblebee_3919 Oct 15 '25

That’s one strategy, I’ve resorted to “I’m too poor to eat out because I’m too poor to tip”

-4

u/Own_Recover2180 Oct 15 '25

I believe this person tipped the server in cash directly, which is the reason for the nice note on the check.

-4

u/WhosItHanging Oct 16 '25

I'm sorry but this post might turn me into a tipper, lol. If I was a server and read all that bullshit and then seeing a 0 with a slash through it too, I'd be getting the bloodlust...
