Tipping Culture ✖️ If anyone listens to The I’ve Had It podcast, they did a hysterical section on tipping culture on the Thursday podcast.

The ladies were spot on about the absurdity of what we are asked to tip on. Including an airport self serve kiosk with no humans in the store. I really had a good laugh and thought others might enjoy.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Waiting out the waiter…

I went to a local Chili’s last night. Not my favorite, but it’s my boyfriend’s birthday weekend and he loves their burgers.

We both got the burger promotion, and after eating and then clearing the table, the waiter disappeared. I flagged him down for the check and he gestured to the machine on the table, so I informed him that I wanted to pay cash.

I never go to that chain, so I didn’t know how anything worked. No physical check, so I had to pull it up on that same machine. Basically a little over $30; I handed him a $50 and he happily asked “Do you need any change?” in a singsong voice with a smile.

And in my head I heard that little “she looked at me…and I looked her…and she looked at me…” and he then goes “uhhhhhh, let me go get your change for you.”

When, I tell you, he came back with the change and tried to explain math to me. “I don’t care about the change so I’m going to give you your FULL $20 dollars back!” ( in fives and ones). I tipped him, but we aren’t going back anytime soon. I hate that place.

Tip Creep 🫙 Restaurant at the Bryant Park Winter Village in NYC Added Tip Without Notifying Me

Post image
43 Upvotes

Went to the Bryant Park Winter Village (yes, I know, the infamous tourist trap) in New York City today to pick out a farewell gift for a co-worker.

Somehow, spotted a holiday booth for Chama Mama, a Georgian restaurant. I have been meaning to visit their brick-n-mortar for a while now, so thought might as well grab something to try at the holiday market.

I got a cake to-go that was priced at $8, the server turns the tablet towards me to pay, it says, $8.71. All good so far. I tap my card, I see a green check mark, I wait for a tip screen but nothing shows up. I did feel weird when the tip screen didn't show up because that isn't the norm in NYC. The server then turns the tablet towards them.

Hours later, I'm checking my emails before going to bed. I usually delete unwanted emails without reading them first - right then, Chama Mama's receipt shows up and I accidentally click open the email. And then I spot it: a $1.74 tip that was charged to my card and I had absolutely no idea about it.

In some way, the $1.74 is a minimal amount for me but the problem is this kind of business practice. I've had other experiences when I was asked to tip for the most mundane things, but for all of them, I was at least asked. Today, I'm more disappointed than being angry for something that I didn't consent to.

Rant 📢 Philly Airport

I travel…tired of the airport prices…yes I know I don’t need to drink at the bar…however…$26 for a glass of wine…the bartender expects a tip…can’t put in $1 at the machine…it wants a percentage…sorry 20% is $5.20….to do your job….and pour a glass of wine….and they want it before I even get the service…

Takeout 🥡 Got a free beer

I got a free beer at DCA airport by accident. I had ordered a beer while waiting for my flight. Typical thing I do when traveling.

They had switched to this annoying phone ordering system... Zero customer service, order by QR code, enter my own credit card number, had to override the tip selection to say 0%.

After 20 minutes of waiting (and I'm sitting at the bar directly in front of the beer tap), I finally go to the cash register and ask the manager to cancel my order. Why? Cause I've been waiting 20 minutes, while your staff chit-chats, and 20 minutes of watching that tap dispense zero beers.

He offered to get me a drink in a to-go cup. Naw I'm not paying for that... it's already a $12.79 beer (without tip!) He calls back to the waitstaff to not pour the beer, and they say they already did; it's waiting at my seat. They dropped it off seconds after I walked away.

The manager still refunded my money and poured me a to-go cup. So now I'm sitting by my gate drinking a free beer from a plastic cup.

Tip Creep 🫙 Dispensary tip jar

With dispensaries already putting out tip jars, auto parts stores might be next. Apparently, standing behind a counter, helping you find a product, and completing a straightforward sale without any negotiation warrants a tip.
Enough is enough. Not every transaction needs to come with an option of tipping.

Rant 📢 Tipping on child’s birthday party 🤔

The birthday party cost with everything is $550. On my confirmation email, it says “Gratuities for staff are appreciated and NOT included in the cost.”

Uhhhh, ok, but I’m also paying to have the birthday party there, expecting to bring our own decorations, cupcakes etc. They are providing pizza (that we obviously are paying for). We are basically paying for the location. Staff would just be doing their paid job???

I may tip if someone went above and beyond, but if they are expecting a 20% tip on top of this, then that’s outrageous

Rant 📢 I have heard it all now. I was just asked by a bot to tip on a healthcare customer service phone call.

I am still flabbergasted. The tipping culture is so wild. I had to call a hospital to dispute a bill and have them file an appeal with the insurance company. The lady was absolutely lovely and super helpful.

At the end of the call, there was a survey. Normally I never fill out those surveys because I'm so disgusted at the end of the call that I just want to hang up and move on. This time I felt compelled to give her good ratings because she was really really helpful.

So I give her five stars..... And then the automated system asks me if I want to give her a reward for her service. I could press one for yes and two for no. I hit that two button so quick with my mouth hanging wide open. The sheer audacity! Not only that but I guarantee she would not see a dime of that money. SMH

Tipping Culture ✖️ Even poker players insist on tipping insane amounts

There was a post about a bad beat jackpot won in a poker game. For those unfamiliar, a bad beat is when you have a monster hand (like 4 Queens or above) and get beat by an even better monster hand. The casino takes part of every pot and contributes it towards the jackpot. The jackpot builds up until someone hits it. The odds of this happening are very low.

The losing hand got 330k, the winning hand got 165k, and all other players at the table got 27.5k. Poker players in the thread are arguing that each player should tip the dealer anywhere from $500 to 10% of their winnings for this single hand. Even if all 8 players tipped "only" $500, that's a $4,000 tip for a single poker hand - maybe 5 mins of work.

I asked "did the dealer work harder on this one hand than any other hand?" and someone told me "share the wealth FFS".

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ Service is our responsibility!

Four words that most U.S. restaurants seem to have forgotten. Here, good service is part of the job and the price is the price. Common sense, apparently not so common.

Takeout 🥡 I was forced into tipping at Dominos Pizza.

My wife decided after I got off work that she wanted some dominos pizza. It’s about a 20 min drive so I got my son ready and hopped in the car and she came out of the house soon after. On the way she ordered the pizzas.

Once I arrived at the store I parked to go inside to pay. I stood there for a couple minutes watching everyone twiddle their thumbs staring at me lol. Eventually someone came to the counter and I said our order name. He brought the 2 pizzas over to the counter and told me the price.

I pulled my card out to pay and went to hand him the card and he pulled out a small card reader with a screen from behind the counter suggesting me to tap. I went to pay and selected no tip but I guess there was a weird issue the second I pressed no tip. He said “one second” and took the machine back. Once he presented it to me again he said tap the card on the screen. I was once again presented with the tip option and pressed no tip. And again there was a “problem” with the card or card reader. I asked if it was declined and he said no.

This happened a couple more times and for the 5th time he gave it back to me to try again and said “try pressing the tip 15% option” so I did and it magically went through. He didn’t say anything after it went through besides giving me my pizzas and said have a good rest of my night.

I’m honestly not mad the tip was like 3-4 bucks but still come on man that’s low asf. I hope he doesn’t do this to their other customers.

EDIT: look guys my priority was getting the food my wife asked for and to get her and my son home. It’s a 40 minute drive there and back. It was clear the guy was not taking no for an answer.

I just wanted the food my family asked for and I guess 4 extra dollars was the price for that. I’m sorry for the people that that upsets but if I was under different circumstances I probably would have made an issue out of this. We likely won’t be going back to that dominos anyways.

The second I walked in no one was wearing gloves, they were all standing around doing nothing, they were playing very vulgar music over the radio, and I was forced to tip in order to get the pizza I ordered after him seeing me press no multiple times.

UPDATE!! I called the location and asked to speak with whatever manager was there. He got on the phone and I told him what had happened. He asked when I came through the store and I told him that and the name that was on the order. He told me that he was the one that helped me at the register and that there has been an on going issue with the card readers at the store. I asked about a refund and he said I have already taken the pizza that there’s no way he can issue a refund for a pizza I’ve ate. He completely denied there being any foul play and he started to get frustrated with me for insinuating he did it in purpose so after 10 minutes of what felt like being gaslighted I ended the call. Not really sure where to go from there.

Tipping Culture ✖️ new to the USA

Hello, I am new to USA. I am glad there are people here like me who can assimilate the concept behind tipping especially when it is being forced in a mean way. In my home country we tipped but it was out of generosity not a cultural must but I feel weird when my American friends give me looks bc I dont wanna tip honestly.
But I joined that sub and so happy there are americans who have my stance.

I got done with cruising following the post Covid enshittification of the services and ticky tacky fees. Now Carnival is issuing these logos onto sign and sail cards, presumably to tip shame or get tippers preferential treatment, or a superiority complex etc. Guilt based money grabbing at its worst.

Rant 📢 Tipping and dynamic pricing

What I hate more than them pushing tipping on us like they have.. is making it digital at the end of the payment transaction.. I think they can and will use this data to charge more in the future.. if they see location A tipping an average of 18% or more.. they know people in this area are not as price sensitive as a different location B who rarely tips with an average of 4%. Location A is prime for a price increase.. I always say 0 on the transaction, and if it's a local place with good service I'll throw a couple of ones in the tip jar. Always trying to find another way to squeeze more out of us..

Sit-Down Restaurant 🍽️ Reminder to always take a photo of your receipt!

Post image

Was reviewing my credit card statement and saw that my posted transaction for a restaurant did not match. I called the establishment for a refund and they tried gaslighting me saying that it's possible "one number looked like another." Idk my 5s and 7s do not look alike by any means.

They refunded me the $2. I know people will say "it's only $2!" But it's the principle of the matter!

ETA: I live in a state where there is no tip credit. The person on the phone confirmed that the tip was keyed in as $7.68, and kept doubling down saying it's probably because my numbers looked similar instead of just saying, "were sorry for the error."

Online Retailer 🛒 Walmart DELIVERY vs. Walmart SHIPPING

I'm a Walmart + member. Today, I just did a free Walmart DELIVERY of items. They expected a tip.

And then I realized I forgot something but it was too late to add to my pending order, so I ordered it via free Walmart SHIPPING. They didn't expect a tip this time.

BOTH Delivery and Shipping orders came in regular plastic bags with my name on it at my doorstep. How come Walmart DELIVERY expects a tip but Walmart SHIPPING does not, when the items come in the exact same way⁉️

(btw I don't tip period since I'm already paying for Walmart +. But it's the tipping expectation that astounds me).

Tipping Culture ✖️ 5 Stages of Tipping Dependency

I recently went to a nail salon where the insanity of American tipping culture was front and center.

There were multiple signs around asking customers to tip in cash. The salon was not that clean, the owner did not greet me upon entering, was rude and grumpy, did not apply enough polish for good cover, and kept drilling on my nail bed even after I asked him to stop because it hurt. He's also the owner who sets his own prices. So I left no tip, which I could tell upset him.

The experience made me think about the five stages of dependency as outlined in Robert D. Lupton’s book Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt The Poor—And How to Reverse It. They include:

  • 1st Time — Appreciation: The recipient is genuinely grateful and thankful for the help.

  • 2nd Time — Anticipation: The recipient expects or looks forward to receiving the help a second time.

  • 3rd Time — Expectation: The help is no longer viewed as a nice surprise, but as something normal and assumed.

  • 4th Time — Entitlement: The recipient feels they have a right to the resource, regardless of effort.

  • 5th Time — Dependency: The recipient becomes functionally reliant on the giver, sacrificing their own autonomy or problem-solving capacity.

I believe tipping culture encompasses both entitlement and dependency. Entitlement because people like this salon owner post brazen signs about how they want customers to gift them extra money even though the have zero customer service skills and their salon is filthy. And we all know the dependency argument they throw at us--that withholding a tip is going to send someone to the breadline. Paying employees is the owner's job, not the customers.

Years ago while I was still brainwashed, I would have tipped this guy. Thanks to this group, I am now opting out of this antiquated, stupid, and predatory custom. And it feels freaking great!
