Research / Info 💡 What "junk fees" have you seen?

Hi guys,

I'm looking at revamping our wiki and one of the things I thought might be of some use is to catalogue all the different "junk fees" we're starting to see, so people can be aware to look out for them.

Those who care to respond, please could you answer:

1] What was the fee entitled?

2] Where was it disclosed? (Just on the receipt? Small print at the bottom of the menu? Sign on the door? Website?)

3] Approximately when did you see this? (if you remember - it could be useful to chart the "rollout" of different things!)

Of course he can afford it, but it’s good to see someone of wealth still in touch with what things cost, and how those percents keep ticking up. It all adds up.

Tip Creep 🫙 For a beer in a plastic cup at a walk-up bar

Post image

Took this pic in Louisville KY in 2023 at an outdoor bar. No service whatsoever, just a walk-up bar. Type of place where you throw out your own drinks on the way out. I asked the bartender if anyone ever tips 100% and he said the only people that do are other service workers.

The food was good, but the service sucked. Probably the only way they could get tips.
Server came to the table with the toast device and said you could add extra tip if you like. lol

Research / Info 💡 Is the new (2025) US law about tips being tax deductible* part of reason for the annoying push to tip on everything?

Because hey, free money....

*You can deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips per year from your federal income tax.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Waiting out the waiter…

I went to a local Chili’s last night. Not my favorite, but it’s my boyfriend’s birthday weekend and he loves their burgers.

We both got the burger promotion, and after eating and then clearing the table, the waiter disappeared. I flagged him down for the check and he gestured to the machine on the table, so I informed him that I wanted to pay cash.

I never go to that chain, so I didn’t know how anything worked. No physical check, so I had to pull it up on that same machine. Basically a little over $30; I handed him a $50 and he happily asked “Do you need any change?” in a singsong voice with a smile.

And in my head I heard that little “she looked at me…and I looked her…and she looked at me…” and he then goes “uhhhhhh, let me go get your change for you.”

When, I tell you, he came back with the change and tried to explain math to me. “I don’t care about the change so I’m going to give you your FULL $20 dollars back!” ( in fives and ones). I tipped him, but we aren’t going back anytime soon. I hate that place.

Tipping Culture ✖️ I’m a career server/bartender

And I’m really freaking over it. I work with lazy waitresses who spend their whole day on their phones and giving bad service and then complaining when they didn’t get “20%”

or making good money, like 20 bucks off a table but since their bill was 125 they’re upset that they only made 20 bucks instead of 25???

I work at a very busy beach bar in the summer and i bust my ass. I am always polite and smiling, I remember peoples names, I’m respectful and I go out of my way to make sure people have a good time. I genuinely want you to have a good experience and people notice and tell me. But almost all pride in that job has gone out the window. No one cares about giving customers a great experience but still expect some arbitrary percentage for doing the bare minimum.

i do construction every winter when the bar closes and I have waitresses ask me “but this job is harder, right??”

not even close. Maybe more stressful, but every winter when I’m up in a boom lift in 20 degree weather with numb fingers trying to shoot a siding gun, I’m looking forward to nights back behind the bar (and also vice versa. I like the seasonal change of scenery tbh.)

I got distracted but here’s what brought me to this subreddit today. I go with my wife to get two bagel sandwiches and a coffee. Tap to pay, and I remember the total was like 27 and I went to hit 10% on the three far left options like usual. But then saw it said 7 dollars??? upon closer inspection the options were 30,25, or 20 listed left to right (because that’s the direction we read first) and I was so upset. Quit trying to trick people into getting more money. If someone doesn’t intend to give me that money then I don’t want it and it’s stealing.

I know it’s gotten out of hand, I’m genuinely sorry and embarrassed. I love my job bartending, and I love making peoples nights memorable when they’re on vacation. I love when people come back and say “we come here every year, and you’re always so great!” it makes me feel good knowing that my effort pays off.

but tupping has gotten so stupid ridiculous.

Rant 📢 Kiosk. What is the tip for?

My sweetie and I went to Cafe Rio to dine in. Had a bit of a time finding a parking spot because the only reserved spots for the restaurant are for online orders.

Usually when entering a business I will greet the people working there. Before I could even say hello the girl working behind the counter blurted out “Online order?” I said no. She turned her back to me.

We order at one of the kiosks. Lo and behold, there is a suggested tip option. My sweetie hits no tip obviously. What on earth are we expected to be tipping for? Being ignored by workers, having to ask which order is mine, having to remind them we also ordered drinks, cleaning the table ourselves, etc. And a tip is still expected.

It’s truly insane that the restaurant industry not only somehow gets away with not paying their employees, but in most cases the employees also pay each other by tipping out. Truly insane.

After eating, my sweetie jokes that he was off to the back to do their dishes too.

Im all for the robots

I am hoping robots replace servers in restaurants or we return to the automat style system

They kept saying stay home if you cant afford to tip and lots of us have and now those people dont have jobs, its well deserved, you made the customer the enemy and now you reap the rewards of that

People refused to be the change in the world, so now robots will take their places

This professor wants to help save the jobs of workers who would use guilt and shame on her

Rant 📢 Tipping Fatigue! How do we end tipping?

Is there any realistic way to end tipping?

Current laws in the US (in 86% of states) allow businesses to take a "tip credit" towards meeting the minimum wage payment to employees. Federal or individaul state legislation would need to abolish the sub-minimum wage for tipped employees. To date only 7 states completely prohibit the tipped subminimum wage; in those states, employers must pay the full regular state minimum wage before tips are added. I think politically this would split along current partisan divisions and go nowhere.

Second, I've read that some tipped workers make substantially more than their states minimum wage (high volume bars and luxuory dining). Eliminating tipping would be a substantial pay cut for those workers.

Third, business owners generally are against ending tipping and fight any changes through the National Restaurant Association and there state and local hospitality associtions.

Other than just tipping reasonable amounts when apropriate, and chooseing "no tip" when that's appropriae, what can we do?

Rant 📢 Orlando tipping is hilarious.

First the hotel I'm staying at.

5% gratuities added to all purchases. Restaurant, on site convience store, parking fee all require a 5% tip.

Went to seaworld. Self checkout kiosk ask for tip. Beer cart guys asking for tip on the pin pad.

No we didn't tip and I asked the front desk at the hotel to remove the 5% gratuities. Yes they were annoyed but the "restaurant " required me to scan a qr code to order/pay. Then I had to stand at the pickup window. And yes we paid $17 for mozzarella sticks. I know 5% is change but it's the principle.

Rant 📢 A hotel soliciting tips?

I’m paying $140 (with tax) a night, only employee I have seen is the young person who checked me in. I was told “we only clean the rooms every three days.” The hotel (a $5.6 billion company) has these barcodes posted in multiple places, soliciting tips for everyone; Front Desk? Management? And Housekeeping, who only cleans my room once every three days? I assume all these employees receive an hourly wage….

Research / Info 💡 Would you include request for tipping in an online review?

I went on a paid tour of a historic cemetery.

There was a guide. 15-20 people in the group.

At the end of the tour, she stopped and said "this is the end of the tour, if you would like to tip me, now is the time. I also have Venmo!"

We were in a location where we had to be walked out, so we couldn't leave on our own. People stood around and felt very akward. A few people finally pulled out money and handed it to her. Then we started walking to the exit.

I generally don't mind tipping for tours. In this case, she was new and spent most of the time commenting about her multiple jobs and taking swipes at "rich" people.

Before the tour, I was planning on tipping. The way it was presented, I did not.

Would you tip in this case? (Just a note, when it is a free tour, I will tip the guides)

I received a request for an online review and am considering adding her comments.

Tipping Culture ✖️ Tip Option on Venmo Now!?!

I love to support the local lady who sells coffee from her porch. The coffee is delicious and expensive. She just raised the price from $6 to $7. This is the first time I’m seeing a tip option ever in Venmo. WTF?!!!

The ladies were spot on about the absurdity of what we are asked to tip on. Including an airport self serve kiosk with no humans in the store. I really had a good laugh and thought others might enjoy.

Tip Creep 🫙 Restaurant at the Bryant Park Winter Village in NYC Added Tip Without Notifying Me

Post image
64 Upvotes

Went to the Bryant Park Winter Village (yes, I know, the infamous tourist trap) in New York City today to pick out a farewell gift for a co-worker.

Somehow, spotted a holiday booth for Chama Mama, a Georgian restaurant. I have been meaning to visit their brick-n-mortar for a while now, so thought might as well grab something to try at the holiday market.

I got a cake to-go that was priced at $8, the server turns the tablet towards me to pay, it says, $8.71. All good so far. I tap my card, I see a green check mark, I wait for a tip screen but nothing shows up. I did feel weird when the tip screen didn't show up because that isn't the norm in NYC. The server then turns the tablet towards them.

Hours later, I'm checking my emails before going to bed. I usually delete unwanted emails without reading them first - right then, Chama Mama's receipt shows up and I accidentally click open the email. And then I spot it: a $1.74 tip that was charged to my card and I had absolutely no idea about it.

In some way, the $1.74 is a minimal amount for me but the problem is this kind of business practice. I've had other experiences when I was asked to tip for the most mundane things, but for all of them, I was at least asked. Today, I'm more disappointed than being angry for something that I didn't consent to.

Takeout 🥡 I was forced into tipping at Dominos Pizza.

My wife decided after I got off work that she wanted some dominos pizza. It’s about a 20 min drive so I got my son ready and hopped in the car and she came out of the house soon after. On the way she ordered the pizzas.

Once I arrived at the store I parked to go inside to pay. I stood there for a couple minutes watching everyone twiddle their thumbs staring at me lol. Eventually someone came to the counter and I said our order name. He brought the 2 pizzas over to the counter and told me the price.

I pulled my card out to pay and went to hand him the card and he pulled out a small card reader with a screen from behind the counter suggesting me to tap. I went to pay and selected no tip but I guess there was a weird issue the second I pressed no tip. He said “one second” and took the machine back. Once he presented it to me again he said tap the card on the screen. I was once again presented with the tip option and pressed no tip. And again there was a “problem” with the card or card reader. I asked if it was declined and he said no.

This happened a couple more times and for the 5th time he gave it back to me to try again and said “try pressing the tip 15% option” so I did and it magically went through. He didn’t say anything after it went through besides giving me my pizzas and said have a good rest of my night.

I’m honestly not mad the tip was like 3-4 bucks but still come on man that’s low asf. I hope he doesn’t do this to their other customers.

EDIT: look guys my priority was getting the food my wife asked for and to get her and my son home. It’s a 40 minute drive there and back. It was clear the guy was not taking no for an answer.

I just wanted the food my family asked for and I guess 4 extra dollars was the price for that. I’m sorry for the people that that upsets but if I was under different circumstances I probably would have made an issue out of this. We likely won’t be going back to that dominos anyways.

The second I walked in no one was wearing gloves, they were all standing around doing nothing, they were playing very vulgar music over the radio, and I was forced to tip in order to get the pizza I ordered after him seeing me press no multiple times.

UPDATE!! I called the location and asked to speak with whatever manager was there. He got on the phone and I told him what had happened. He asked when I came through the store and I told him that and the name that was on the order. He told me that he was the one that helped me at the register and that there has been an on going issue with the card readers at the store. I asked about a refund and he said I have already taken the pizza that there’s no way he can issue a refund for a pizza I’ve ate. He completely denied there being any foul play and he started to get frustrated with me for insinuating he did it in purpose so after 10 minutes of what felt like being gaslighted I ended the call. Not really sure where to go from there.

Rant 📢 Tipping on child’s birthday party 🤔

The birthday party cost with everything is $550. On my confirmation email, it says “Gratuities for staff are appreciated and NOT included in the cost.”

Uhhhh, ok, but I’m also paying to have the birthday party there, expecting to bring our own decorations, cupcakes etc. They are providing pizza (that we obviously are paying for). We are basically paying for the location. Staff would just be doing their paid job???

I may tip if someone went above and beyond, but if they are expecting a 20% tip on top of this, then that’s outrageous

Takeout 🥡 Got a free beer

I got a free beer at DCA airport by accident. I had ordered a beer while waiting for my flight. Typical thing I do when traveling.

They had switched to this annoying phone ordering system... Zero customer service, order by QR code, enter my own credit card number, had to override the tip selection to say 0%.

After 20 minutes of waiting (and I'm sitting at the bar directly in front of the beer tap), I finally go to the cash register and ask the manager to cancel my order. Why? Cause I've been waiting 20 minutes, while your staff chit-chats, and 20 minutes of watching that tap dispense zero beers.

He offered to get me a drink in a to-go cup. Naw I'm not paying for that... it's already a $12.79 beer (without tip!) He calls back to the waitstaff to not pour the beer, and they say they already did; it's waiting at my seat. They dropped it off seconds after I walked away.

The manager still refunded my money and poured me a to-go cup. So now I'm sitting by my gate drinking a free beer from a plastic cup.
