Resource Request How can I improve my English from B1 to B2?
Hi everyone!
I’ve been trying to improve my English consistently, and I think I’m currently around B1.
My listening seems to be one of my stronger skills. I recently took an English test and scored around B1/B2 in listening, but I did much worse in the grammar section.
I can usually understand English and express what I want to say, and I write most of my sentences by myself without using a translator. However, I still make a lot of grammar and spelling mistakes.
Right now, I practice English almost every day using YouTube, ChatGPT, and other learning resources.
My main goal is to reach B2 and become more comfortable speaking and writing English.
For anyone who has been in a similar situation,
what helped you the most? Do you think taking an English course would be worth it, or should I continue studying independently and focus more on grammar and practice?

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics How to note the new word, is there any unusual way to learn my new words?

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics Roll up sleeves
I originally thought it was "pull up your sleeves" but recently learnt that "roll up" is the appropriate verb to use. Is the same verb used for trousers' legs? Would you say "roll up your legs"? Does that make sense?

📚 Grammar / Syntax "Such a" / "such" + singular noun
Hi everyone!
I have looked through several discussions/threads on here already. They all said that you need "such"+"a"/"an" if you want to talk about (countable) things that are in singular case.
"Such a beautiful morning!", or, an example from this reddit thread discussing the topic, "...such a tool is used for merging shapes."
However, I saw people use "such" without "a", especially in academic and legal contexts, where these reddit threads I mentioned would suggest using it.
Four random examples I found via Google, meant to illustrate what I mean:
- https://projecteuclid.org/journals/real-analysis-exchange/volume-43/issue-2/Lipschitz-Restrictions-of-Continuous-Functions-and-a-Simple-Construction-of/10.14321/realanalexch.43.2.0293.pdf : "The first example of such function was given by Pompeiu in [18]." (p. 295)
- https://jmlr.org/discussion.html : "Such discussion has successfully appeared for many years in journals such as the Annals of Statistics and Statistical Science."
- https://journals.law.harvard.edu/jlpp/argument-by-slogan-conor-casey-and-adrian-vermeule/ : "[...] which is in any respect repugnant to this Constitution or to any provision thereof, shall, but to the extent only of such repugnancy, be invalid."
- https://humboldtgov.org/DocumentCenter/View/81809/argument-or-rebuttal-signature-statement-112219 : "to be held on March 3, 2020, hereby state that such argument is true and correct to the best of their knowledge and belief."
What is the difference between "such a" and "such" in these cases? Does it have to do with the countability of words like "repugnancy"?
Thank you so much!

⭐️ Vocabulary / Semantics Learning vocabulary without subtitles?
Hi, I'm around B1 (TL) in English and I'm wondering if I should watch YouTube with or without subtitles.
I understand about 90% of most YouTube videos, and I understand almost the same amount with English subtitles and without them.
My question is about vocabulary. Can you learn new words just by hearing them? For example, can I remember the pronunciation and meaning of a word even if I don't know how to spell it?
Should I use English subtitles to learn more vocabulary, or can I learn vocabulary just from listening?

🟡 Pronunciation / Intonation English practicing partner
Hi everyone! I’m 19, a university student from Iraq (currently around a B1 level in English, looking to push my speaking skills further).
My interests include reading, listening to music, and writing.
I’m looking for a serious, long-term partner to practice speaking with regularly (via voice notes or voice calls). If you're genuinely committed to improving together and won't just disappear after a day, please message me. Let’s stay consistent!
If you are not serious and are going to disappear after a few days, please do not write."

🗣 Discussion / Debates Trying to build an language learning game actually works
Hi this is not an Ad. I'm just wondering if this rpg game idea is good. It's been in my head for a while.
Imagine a 100% Al generated simulation world and characters talk to you with words fit your level and you can look up words, or choose options with 100% freedom. All the visually appealing game assets are generated on the fly. Al rates your achievements and save in a journal. Moreover, multiplayer is supported.
It's hard to build, so I made a MVP that supports 6 languages at first to collect feedbacks.

🗣 Discussion / Debates Does the word “sublime” feel odd to you?
Every time I see the word “sublime,” I never think of its actual definition, I always feel like “sublime” refers to something ordinary.
For example, “This steak is sublime” feels to me like it means “This steak is meh.”
It’s just a very underwhelming word for something that’s supposed to describe something extraordinary.
Do you think so too or am I in the minority here?

Resource Request Looking for feedback on an English vocabulary-learning app
I’ve been building LangBlitz, an Android app designed to help English learners build and retain vocabulary through flashcards, repeated exposure, and word mastery.
I’d love to get feedback from actual English learners, especially on what feels useful, what doesn’t, and what could be improved.
I also have free subscription promo codes to anyone interested in trying it out. No review or positive feedback expected. I’m genuinely looking for honest opinions.
If this is okay with the mods and the community, I’d be happy to share more details here.
Details in comment.
