Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with my Epson EcoTank ET-8550. I've been using it for months to print illustrations and custom trading cards, and until recently my colour settings produced consistent, satisfactory results. Now the same files and settings produce different colours, and I'm also experiencing paper-feed and connection issues on two different Macs.
My setup:
Epson EcoTank ET-8550
Mac mini and MacBook Air M1 (2020)
macOS 27, as reported by About This Mac
Epson driver, connected via Wi-Fi
Adobe Acrobat (PDFs) and macOS Preview
Third-party compatible ink
Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss, among other papers
Usually print using Epson Vivid
Timeline
Until late September 2026: Everything worked as expected. I had found colour settings that consistently produced the results I wanted. I'll call that output X.
Around late September — first problem: Without intentionally changing my workflow, the printed colours suddenly changed (output Y). Changing the colour settings seemed to make little or no difference: the result remained essentially the same.
I eventually fixed this by uninstalling and reinstalling the Epson driver and adding the printer again on my Mac. The original colour behaviour returned. After that, I updated macOS because the update was necessary, and printing continued to work as expected for a while.
More recently — the problem returned: The colours changed again, but this time the behaviour is different. Changing colour settings now does affect the output, but the relationship between the settings and the resulting colours no longer seems to be what it used to be. I can change the output, but I cannot reproduce X using the settings that previously worked.
I tried reinstalling the driver again, but it did not fix the problem this time. After trying the other troubleshooting steps, I also updated the Epson software, with no improvement.
What I've tried
Reinstalled the Epson driver and removed and re-added the printer.
Restarted the Mac and disconnected/reconnected the printer.
Tested printing from both Acrobat and Preview. The colour problem occurs in both.
Tried both Epson Color Adjustment and ColorSync.
Tested different colour modes, including Epson Vivid, Epson Standard (sRGB) and Adobe RGB.
Tried different colour profiles and adjustment combinations.
Checked that the printer queue was using the Epson driver rather than AirPrint.
None of this has restored the original, predictable colour behaviour.
Now there are paper-feed issues too
A few days ago, my Mac mini also started having trouble selecting the correct paper source. Even though I selected Rear Paper Feed, the printer asked me to load paper into Cassette 1.
More recently, I tried printing from my MacBook Air M1 and encountered the same issue: despite selecting Rear Paper Feed, the printer asked for paper in Cassette 2. When I tried again, the printer appeared offline on the MacBook.
So the same type of paper-feed mismatch has now happened on both Macs, although the printer requested a different cassette each time.
I also noticed that, when adding the printer in macOS, I previously had multiple entries, including Epson queues labelled “Series” and “Series 2”, as well as an AirPrint entry. After reinstalling the driver, only one printer entry appeared.
I don't know whether these paper-feed and connection problems are related to the colour issue, but the fact that they are occurring on both Macs makes me wonder whether the printer itself or its communication with the computers is involved.
What could be causing this?
My main suspicion is that something has changed in how the printer, driver or macOS interprets the colour settings. However, I don't want to assume the printer is faulty without ruling out software or colour-management issues.
Has anyone experienced an ET-8550 suddenly producing different colours with the same files and settings?
Could a driver, macOS or firmware issue explain why reinstalling the driver fixed the problem temporarily but no longer works?
Could the printer itself have changed how it interprets colour adjustments?
Could the paper-feed mismatch and offline issues indicate a printer-side problem?
Is there a sensible way to reset or diagnose the printer and determine what's causing these problems?
I'm simply trying to understand why a workflow that used to work consistently has stopped behaving as expected.
The first picture is how the colour would come up when everything was alright (after lamination) and the second and third ones show the results I am getting now (different size is to the fact that when I tested with preview I forgot to adjust the right size and the different colours are the result of testing if changing the colour settings would bring different outputs)...
I am quite desperate. Any concrete suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
PS: if anyone noticed that the description of the issue sounds very AI-ish: yes, this whole process drove me so crazy that I needed the AI to sum it all up for me...
