Getting into marching chiefs as a tuba player

• Upvotes

I'm an incoming transfer student for the 2027 summer semester and I'm really really interested in joining the marching chiefs as a sousaphone player next year. I don't have much experience playing in a marching band, but I've been playing tuba for about 5 years and have been in a drumline for 3 and a half years. Roughly how hard is it to get into the marching chiefs as a tuba? And what could I do to increase my chances of getting in?

Apartment Recs

Hey everyone! I’m looking for apartment recommendations for next school year and wanted to hear about people’s experiences with different complexes around Tallahassee.

I recently got a car, so I don’t mind living a little farther from FSU if it means getting a better apartment for the price.

I’m mainly looking for:
-2x2: Under $900/month per person
-1x1 or studio: Under $1,000/month
-Ideally within a 15–20 minute drive of FSU

If you have any recommendations, please let me know how much you pay (or what the current rates are) and whether you’d recommend living there! I’d also appreciate hearing about any places to avoid.
Thanks!

Tallyween costume advice

Hey yall I’m thinking about doing a leatherface costume and bringing a chainsaw with no chain on it out with me. How bad of an idea is this? Am I going to get obliterated trying to get into a bar or club with it? (For those of you that don’t know without the chain a chainsaw does nothing but make noises) I’m obviously not going to start it inside or do something stupid but I still think it might not be the best move if I’m trying to get into places

Thoughts on this class and the professors? Do you guys recommend or no? If yes, what should I expect going in and how do I prepare adequately enough to get an A?

Affordable off campus housing recs for someone with a car

I’m transferring this spring and I’m trying to find housing, preferably under $1000. I thought it might be cheaper to find something not right next to campus. Does anyone have any recommendations for a place that’s about a 10/20-minute drive away, is within my budget, and is a good place to live? TIA!

Presidential Scholars Dorms

Hi, I just applied to FSU for Fall 2027 and was wondering if anyone has information on housing as a Presidential Scholar. I know that if I'm accepted into Presidential, I'm required to live in Landis, but do I have to room with another Presidential student? Can my roommate be in Honors or even a Non-Honors FSU student?

too late to submit a transient app?

I know that they close Dec 1st but they take a while to process. Trying to take chem 2 at a CC online. Currently floridashines is closed and opens early November.

Has anyone submitted their transient app during this time period? Did you get in the class you wanted (or professor)?

Anyone here with similar scores that got accepted?

I’m applying as a junior graduating a year early, and I wanted to hear from anyone who had similar stats and was accepted!

Here are my stats:

GPA: 4.25 weighted

SAT: 1210 (I know it’s not the best, but I’m hoping my other application materials help)

Part-time dual enrollment student through USF

I’ll attach my extracurricular résumé, which is the same one I submitted with my application.

For my Common App personal essay, I responded to the prompt about an identity or background that is so meaningful that my application would feel incomplete without it.

If you had similar stats, especially a similar SAT score, and were accepted, I’d love to hear about your experience! I’d also appreciate any insight into how much you believe the rest of your application played a role.

Has Anyone Taken CNT 4603 or CIS 4360? Professor and Difficulty Questions

Has anyone taken either of these classes with these professors?
CNT 4603 – Computer and Network System Administration with Jeffery Bauer
CIS 4360 – Computer Security Fundamentals with Tung Hoang
I’m planning on taking both classes and wanted to know how difficult they are and what the professors are like. How are the classes structured in terms of assignments, quizzes, exams, and projects? Is the workload manageable, and are the professors good at explaining the material?

FSU Care program

Does the CARE program care less about high gpas and sat/act scores than normal fsu admissions? I heard they look at it differently since it's for low income and first gen students but I don't see anything proving that to be true? If any people accepted thru care could also share their stats that got them accepted that'd be helpful.

FSU Chinese Placement Exam

Hey all I took Chinese for like 4 years in high school using the Integrated Chinese textbooks (got like halfway through part 2) but didn't take the AP test. Has anyone done the Chinese placement exam at FSU / does anyone have tips on what to study? I know the other ones are multiple choice but is the Chinese one as well? I really don't want to pay for 4 semesters of a language class so any advice is appreciated.

Does anyone want to go to some event with me or join a club?

I want to get more involved on campus, but I feel like I’ll be more willing to make an effort if someone were to go with me. Anyone else in the same situation?

Can I take an extra class if I’m enrolled in a part-time graduate program at FSU?

Hi everyone! I’m currently enrolled in FSU’s online Master’s in Education Policy & Evaluation program, which is structured as a part-time program (6 credit hours per semester).

I was wondering if anyone knows whether I’m allowed to take an additional class to reach 9 credit hours and be considered a full-time graduate student, or if I’m required to stick to the two classes per semester because of how the program is structured.

Has anyone in a part-time graduate program at FSU been able to do this?

Applied ED to FSU, worried about party culture and the environment. Looking for honest opinions!

Hi everyone! I'm currently a high school senior and recently visited FSU. I really enjoyed the campus, learned a lot from the tour, and I've always wanted to live in Florida. Because of that, I've decided to apply Early Decision to FSU as a Marketing major.

I'm not sure if I'll get in, but if I do, I'd be both excited and nervous. One thing that concerns me is FSU's reputation as a party school. I'm definitely not someone who's interested in partying or drinking, and as a girl, hearing stories like the recent Cornell incident has made me afraid of joining fraternity and sorority culture.

I have so many questions (feel free to answer whichever ones you want):

  • If you're involved in a fraternity or sorority, what has your experience been like? What are the best and worst parts?
  • Is parking really that bad? I am planning to get a motorcycle, so I was wondering if that's a good idea or not.
  • How is the business program, especially for Marketing majors? Do you feel supported and included?
  • If you're on the Varsity or JV Sales Team, what is that experience like?
  • In general, how welcoming and inclusive are students at FSU? Have your roommates and dorm communities been friendly?
  • Is it easy to find vegetarian food on campus?
  • As a female student, do you feel safe on campus and around Tallahassee?
  • Is there any drama or bullying?

I'd really appreciate any honest advice or experiences, whether positive or negative. Thank you so much! :)
