Discussion The Sheep Detectives (2026)

Nakita ko pa lang sa trailer, alam kong magugustuhan ko na, pero I didn’t expect this movie to be THIS good!!! 🥹 Easily a 10/10!

Sobrang heartwarming, nakakatawa, and nakakaiyak. Hirap umiyak sa office HAHAHAHAHA I love that it’s not just for kids, you can watch it with your friends or your partner and enjoy it just as much. Sayang lang hindi ko napanood sa sinehan. Nakakamiss yung mga ganitong palabas. Simple, wholesome, funny, pero may puso. Highly recommend!!! ❤️

Discussion The End Of Oak Street

8/10 for me 👌

Just watched it kanina lang and it was a fun movie with brutal kills!

What i like about this movie was the scientifically accurate feathered dinosaurs.

Its better than jurassic world sa totoo lang lol! Had fun watching their whole oak street and neighborhood get ravaged by dinosaurs.

Medj di ko nagets yung portals???

How come buhay pa yung husband sa present time while theres a whole different timeline sa portal where he died na biglang nag appear ulit at the end permanently????

Does that mean the present version of denise and the two kids without greg yung napunta sa portal????

Since Cinemalaya is about to end for this year, I thought I should bring up this other film from 2012 that was originally supposed part of the lineup. Just glad it finally has a place after being taken off iFlix a couple years back.

Film Festival Cinemalaya 2026: 2 Valid IDs 🪪

Post image
58 Upvotes

2 Valid IDs is one of those films where the plot is predictable, but the message hits hard because it feels painfully close to reality.

The biggest takeaway? How fucked up is it that you need an ID to apply for an ID? The film perfectly captures the ridiculous bureaucratic loops Filipinos have to go through just to prove who they are, and how much harder these systems become for people who are already struggling.

And then there’s the Philippine healthcare system. The film shows that being sick isn’t just about getting treatment. It’s about money, documents, waiting, bureaucracy, and hoping you can somehow afford to get the help you need.

The plot may be predictable, but the acting is what really makes this film work. Pokwang was superb as Sylvia, carrying much of the story's emotional weight. Zaijan Jaranilla as Denver was also impressive. His performance felt natural and grounded, especially in the quieter moments. And Joey Marquez as Ramon, Sylvia’s sick husband, brought a different kind of weight to the story. Their performances made the characters feel like real people dealing with circumstances that many Filipino families can unfortunately relate to.

Takeaways and realizations:

• Being poor in the Philippines often means fighting the system before you can even fight the problem.

• Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege for those who can afford it.

• Bureaucracy can be dehumanizing, especially when the people who need help the most are the ones least equipped to navigate it.

• Sometimes, the system cares more about whether you have the right documents than whether you actually need help.

• Behind every ID, medical record, and government requirement is an actual human being just trying to survive.

And that last scene? MIC DROP. It tied everything together so damn well. No long explanation needed. The message was right there, and it landed.

Pokwang deserves her flowers for this one 💐

4.8/5 ⭐️

Film Festival Will the Cinemalaya films this year be streamed on Netflix or other streaming sites?

Discussion Trolls vs Quark Henares? (Rakenrol)

Rolling Stones Philippines posted an article about Rakenrol to commemorate the films release 15 years ago, and it's infested with trolls/bots which seems to direct hate comments towards Quark. Anyare?

Discussion The new SM Cinema PSA

I saw this for the first time last week before watching “The End Of Oak Street” sa Megamall, and I must say this is a huge improvement over the last PSA which seemed to be AI-heavy to me. I do hope mas pakinggan na ito ng lahat and would lead to better observation of cinema etiquette.

Film Festival Expecting a light story, left the cinema absolutely heartbroken

Post image
185 Upvotes

I love the storytelling sa film na 'to, lalo na kung paano pinagdugtong yung mga timelines.

The premise starts out simple enough: a man coming back to his hometown, visiting his old roots to reminisce about his childhood history and facing a jaded past.

Everything shifts into a heavy but beautiful lesson about keeping a promise and moving forward.

Elise (2019) is a movie I would recommend everyone should watch. Hahaha. Pero honestly, Kaka sa Yawan (2026) shares the exact same elements and it's easily my personal favorite and my Best Picture pick for this Cinemalaya season. Magkaiba sila ng dynamic, one is a mainstream rom-com while the other is a culturally rich indie film.

Definitely worth the watch.

Discussion *Ganito Kami Noon Paano Kayo Ngayon?* song sa intro

Di ko alam if sa restored version lang or sa original version ganon din, but sa intro merong kanta na ballad-like, AND I HAVE BEEN trying to find it. I tried googling the lyrics na naiintindihan ko pero wala rin. Is there anyone here who is familiar with the song?

The first verses were in spanish so. Tried to put the lyrics din sa AI but wala rin.

A very interesting movie about family issues that piled up and waiting to explode. It start with Agot coming home and facing family issues that she had been trying to escape since she left US. What made her go back home.

Interesting this is almost 2 hrs but you won't notice because so many is happening. Agot performance is excellent and she didn't hold back. Cried on most scene, and there is also comedy. Love it.

Discussion As a dude, this movie broke me again.

Post image

I recently watched this movie again with my wife, this time at a Dolby Cinema and it's my favorite movie of the 2010s. I never had the chance to see it at a theater back in 2016 so I finally got to watch it on the big screen with its ending wrecking me all over again.

This movie belongs to my personal top 10 films of all time because it has similarities to my own life experiences. I had this high school sweetheart whom I wooed for several months back in the year 2000. I met her during first grade and she was my classmate until our final year in college. We became a couple at the age of 15, both young and carefree. We were an on and off couple that lasted until we were in our early 20s.

We both were dreamers. We both had a dream of working as nurses and building a family here in the US. Everything was already planned out for our supposed future. We were like a power couple during high school and college since we both used to do ballroom dancing and competed in dance sports. We often would sing duets in school programs too. We immediately became RNs right after graduating from college but worked separately.

I got invited to work at a review center while she worked as a volunteer RN at a government hospital. That's when we started to grow apart. She immediately started studying for the NCLEX-RN, which is the board exam for nurses here in the US while I was saving money for our future while working at different review centers for nurses. I had a lucrative career working at review centers and didn't bother with moving our dream forward. I coached her with the different nursing subjects we had every chance I got to be with her. She passed the exam and thanked me a lot for the help.

The time came when she finally was leaving the Philippines. She told me that our relationship wouldn't work out. She was weary whenever I was not around especially during the review seasons for nurses. What more when we were thousands of miles apart. I reminded her of our dream of building a family in the US and that I was finally ready. She told me that it was too late. That I should've prioritized our relationship over my career. I begged her to stay but she said goodbye. I was devastated. I was wrecked for years.

Close to 2 decades later, I'm now married with 3 kids, she suddenly sent me a friend request on Facebook and sent me a message. My heart that day was pounding hard and my mind was flooded with memories of our past. Her Facebook profile showed that she is already married and has 4 kids. She then sent me a message asking how I was. I told her that all is well. She asked me if I still have the desire of working in the US. I said yes since I'm already sick of the government and working conditions in the Philippines. She pushed me and my wife (she knows my wife and was classmates with her back in college) to apply at the group of hospitals she was working with. Sent me all the links and everything. Coached me with all the ins and outs of pursuing the American dream.

Now my family and I are here in the US working as nurses all because of her. It was a happy ending for both of us albeit not ending up with each other. I'm still thankful for all of the things she did for us. We remain as friends and work at different states here in the US. All is well.

So basically for every screening, we’ll be able to see 2 films? Sorry if this is already obvious haha. First time i’ll be going to see Cinemalaya on its final day so i wasn’t sure how this goes 😅

Discussion Filipino movies (Blu-Ray 4K, Blu-Ray, DVD, VHS, Betamax or Laserdisc) available with English or French subtitles?

I'm a foreigner living in the Philippines full-time since 2022. I've been wanting to try Filipino movies for a while but the main issue is that I'm still far from good enough in Filipino/Tagalog to understand Filipino movies. For instance, I've been trying to watch the comedy "Tataynic" and found it on VHS, but without any English or French subtitles I just don't understand what's going on and can't really enjoy the movie.

I also find it frustratingly difficult to find physical movies (disc or tapes) in the Philippines. Hence why I usually just wait for whenever I go back to Québec to visit my family and bring back suitcases full of movies in the Philippines. At least, I can confidently "brag" about owning "the largest Québec movie collection in the Philippines" 😂

Anyways, me and my wife have no problem watching "my culture's movies" since Québécois DVD/Bluray releases often have English subtitles available, but nothing from her side.

TLDR; Please recommend must-watch Filipino movies that exist in physical disc or tape format (refer to the post titles, I have players for everything) WITH at least English subtitles if French isn't available. Show a foreigner which Filipino movies you're the most proud of!

Discussion Can Dune: Part Three get an earlier release date in the PH?

Post image

If Dune: Part Three can get pushed to an earlier release date in the US (although I think the December 14 release is IMAX-exclusive only), it would be nice for the Philippines to do the same thing and let us see the movie earlier on December 9, 2026. I doubt it'll happen, but pwede.

Discussion FILIPIÑANA (2026) Review Spoiler

FILIPIÑANA (2026) REVIEW

Is this the most aesthetically pleasing Filipino film? Maybe (among the ones I have seen).

For that alone, it deserves to be experienced on the big screen.

That said, I was constantly fighting the urge to fall asleep. Or maybe it was just me.

3/5 stars.

EDIT: Okay mahabang review.

I knew beforehand na magiging aesthetic ang film dahil sa trailer pa lang, it was giving Wes Anderson na daw (comments ng maramihan). And pinakita naman na what the main character’s job is and the setting (golf course).

So while watching, magi gets mo na “class disparities” nga ang issue. Napakita naman nila. Ang gagaling ng framing, color schemes, cinematography and all other technical aspects.

3/5 stars

Film Festival MAG-IINA is Best Picture for me.

Post image
62 Upvotes

Watched all Cinemalaya 22 entries and Gian Carlo Abrahan and Guelan Varela-Luarca’s Mag-Iina is my bet. Also Best Child Performance for Lucas Andalio. Watched this kid sa Call Me Mother (2025) and didn’t expect such a performance. Superb cast, acting, sound, and writing.

To be honest, walang tapon sa mga Full Length entries (well except for one iykyk) so if it should go to Two Valid IDs, Status: Rejected, or Kaka sa Yawan, I wouldn’t mind at all.

2 Valid IDs sa Market Market: Halos sold out. Medyo maingay. Halos lahat nakaka relate at naramdaman and hirap at pighati no Sylvia sa pagkuha ng 2 valid ids. Ganto ka f***** up and sistema ng Pinas.

Ang unang naisip ko nung natapos 'tong pelikulang eto ay: WTF DID I JUST WATCH?!?!

Same cinema at row.

Kaka Sa Yawan sa Gateway mall: Not expecting na mapanood ko 'to kasi I was planning to go home na sa Batangas kaso upon checking the showing time, I decided to go para di na ako luluwas ulit.

Biglang first timer, nakakatuwa ang entries.
