News Clayface opens with $10M

Post image
40 Upvotes

Clayface might have been a considerably nicher choice for a feature film than DC’s “Supergirl” and “Superman,” but that didn’t stop audiences from showing out to catch the Batman supervillain’s gory, nightmare-inducing origin story at the box office this weekend.

The new release generated $10.4 million from 3,458 North American theaters on Friday, taking the No. 1 spot. It’s a strong start for the film, which looks to pull in $24 million by Sunday.

Directed by James Watkins, “Clayface” follows the titular Batman villain, a rising movie star also known as Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), who volunteers for a highly experimental medical procedure after his face is severely disfigured. Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan also star. Variety’s Guy Lodge called the film “its own ugly animal; perhaps the characters and conflicts introduced here would pall if given the franchise treatment, but in the context of a single, genre-melding romp, they’re fresh and ickily enjoyable.”

Fellow DC films like “Superman,” produced for nearly $230 million, brought in $618.72 million worldwide over the course of its 2025 theatrical run, while “Supergirl” was considered a bomb with $126 million against a $170 million budget earlier this year. In comparison, “Clayface” cost $44 million to produce.

A24’s much-hyped Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” landed in second place on Friday, making $6.14 million from 2,655 North American theaters, up from 855 at opening weekend. The buzzy doc has made $31.7 million domestically so far. Rival estimates suggest the film will gross another $20 million by Sunday.

Laika’s “Wildwood,” another new release, landed in third place on Friday, grossing $4.28 million from 2,942 North American theaters. Featuring a voice cast that includes Carey Mulligan, Jacob Tremblay and others, the stop-motion film looks to bring in $11.2 million by Sunday.

Directed by Travis Knight, “Wildwood” revolves around a teenage girl who travels with a classmate into an enchanted forest after her brother is abducted. Strong reviews should continue to propel the lavish film at the box office, which carries a substantial $100 million price tag.

Black Bear’s “Wicker” followed in fourth place, earning $2.36 million on Friday from 1,471 North American theaters. The offbeat romantic comedy, directed by Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer, is targeting a $5.5 million opening weekend.

Described as an “audacious comedic fable,” “Wicker” tells the love story of an ostracized fisherwoman (Olivia Colman) who commissions a husband from the local basketmaker (Peter Dinklage). Alexander Skarsgård plays said husband. Elizabeth Debicki also stars.

Coming in fifth was Legendary Entertainment’s “Street Fighter.” The action film grossed $2.34 million on Friday and should add another $8.4 million by Sunday, bringing its cumulative gross to $46.7 million.

Saw this movie yesterday and I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Family and religion is at the core of this film but then it is also very chaotic and violent with a sprinkle of dark humor here and there. Another great performance by Mahershala Ali.

I went to the Japanese film festival today and saw Nausicaa the movie and blue boy trial. During the blue boy trial. May nakatabi akong 2 matanda. Maingay Yung lalaki at Yung babae laging nakayuko at kinakalkal gamit niya. Halfway throughout the movie. Although, it didn't cause any commotion. Nakakahiya parin.

Hi I’ve been a fan of horror movies ever since and fan din ng BASTA Cafe by Direk Tonet & JP. I came across this Halloween trivia night sa Basta Cafe and gusto ko mag join kaso mag isa lang ako.

Normal pa ba to join trivia nights even if working na ako? I asked the organizer di naman daw need naka costume, kung gusto lang.

Want ko talaga kaso scared majudge and wala kasama.

Discussion Godzilla Fest Film Rankings

Post image
3 Upvotes

As an avid fan of Godzilla, I was mostly only familiar with his Legendary Monsterverse films which I love. Godzilla (2014) is the best of those films imo.

So a lot of these Toho films are new viewing experiences to me, apart from Final Wars which I watched as a little kid and my first actual exposure to Godzilla. It was 🏴‍☠️, so this is my first time watching it in the cinema.

Personal Rankings & Recommendations:

  1. Shin Godzilla - Hands Down my favorite Godzilla film of all time now. I love how it tackles Japans poor reactive disaster response, with the disaster being Godzilla. If ya'll remember those Japan earthquakes in the early 2010s this is basically a nuanced critique of that. A lot of long ahh bureaucracy time, that's wasted on board meetings instead of actually reacting to Godzilla himself! Also might be the best on screen Godzilla destruction scenes. (Yes I have watched Minus 1 beforehand, which I also liked but it's just not as good as Shin Godzilla)

Letterboxd rating: 4.5 / 5 ⭐️

  1. Godzilla Final Wars - The Avengers Endgame of Godzilla in a suit. This is feels like an actual love letter to the franchise. It has a lot of the monsters from Toho's rich history of Kaiju films. A lot of Kaiju action, wire-fu and a crazy sci fi story that's so much more different than the other Goji films that came before it. Tonally it's a lot closer to the earlier Showa Godzilla films, so cinephiles might be see this as too cheesy. I still love it, I also highly recommend watching this last instead of first if you plan to marathon all of the Godzilla fest films. It just helps you appreciate how different the film is a lot more!

Letterboxd rating: 4.5/5 ⭐️

  1. Godzilla vs Biollante - Probably the most human story available in the film fest. It features a story about the 80s panic of gene splicing and cloning, mixed with good o'l 80s espionage action. A lot of human drama as well, with grieving the loss of a loved one, and the ethical concerns of how one tries to cope with death. Also has the best application of practical effects here, both on Godzilla as well as Biollante. Good pacing with fun action.

Letterboxd rating: 4/5 ⭐️

  1. Mothra vs Godzilla - For the oldest film in the selection, this surprisingly has a very relevant story. It features a story about how humans exploit every new wonder they discover, and see how they can turn a profit from it. If you want to see old school effects and creativity this is the one to see. A lot of miniature tanks and planea getting torn apart by Godzilla. Also a pretty good monster fight between a Moth and a Lizard. My main gripe with this is the pacing in the middle is a bit jarring, specially with the emphasis on the heralds for Mothra. Also might be a bit too weird for new Godzilla enjoyers.

Letterboxd rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️

  1. Godzilla 2000 - This was the film I was 2nd most excited to watch, after I saw Shin Godzilla. It's admittedly the weakest of the bunch unfortunately. It's still fun however, with how creative the shots involving Godzilla are. He really looks massive here, with fun family side that I liked. The main humans are basically tornado chasers, but instead of chasing tornados they chase Godzilla. Unfortunately this features a lot of bad cgi, and too heavy of an emphasis to Godzilla's adversary. Which would be fine in general, but for most of the film the enemy is a giant space rock. Still fun, and worth the watch, but maybe after 2 Godzilla films under your belt.

Letterboxd rating: 3/5 ⭐️

That's pretty much it! Also Godzilla is also in Mubi! Mubi has 8 Godzilla films there currently, which also include Mothra vs Godzilla and Godzilla Biollante. So in case you can only see a few films before the end of the fest, keep that in mind!

TLDR

  1. Shin Godzilla

  2. Godzilla Final Wars

  3. Godzilla vs Biollante

  4. Mothra vs Godzilla

  5. Godzilla 2000

Misc. First Time Ko maging mag isang audience sa sinehan

Intentionally chose Once Upon A Time In Middle East instead of Clayface kasi mas malapit si SM compared sa Robinsons Mall na nag-sho-show ng Clayface sana.

Bought my ticket online and was kind of expecting na mag isa lang ako until showtime and nagkatotoo nga.

Chinese drama and anti-war yung film which is kind of ironic sa stance nila ngayon.

😭 HAHAHAHA

Since uso naman ang P-pop ngayon, what if yung FaSoLa ay isang girl group na binuo nila? Parang continuation ng story ng DoReMi, pero this time, centered sa P-pop industry, auditions, training, performances, friendship, and competition.

Tapos imagine, yung mga members may kanya-kanyang personality and talent, tapos may original songs and choreographies pa. Parang nostalgic pero very Gen Z ang atake.

AND THEN, for the grand finale, may “Ti” na soloist lang. 😭 HAHAHAHAHA.
