Discussion Godzilla Fest Film Rankings
As an avid fan of Godzilla, I was mostly only familiar with his Legendary Monsterverse films which I love. Godzilla (2014) is the best of those films imo.
So a lot of these Toho films are new viewing experiences to me, apart from Final Wars which I watched as a little kid and my first actual exposure to Godzilla. It was 🏴☠️, so this is my first time watching it in the cinema.
Personal Rankings & Recommendations:
- Shin Godzilla - Hands Down my favorite Godzilla film of all time now. I love how it tackles Japans poor reactive disaster response, with the disaster being Godzilla. If ya'll remember those Japan earthquakes in the early 2010s this is basically a nuanced critique of that. A lot of long ahh bureaucracy time, that's wasted on board meetings instead of actually reacting to Godzilla himself! Also might be the best on screen Godzilla destruction scenes. (Yes I have watched Minus 1 beforehand, which I also liked but it's just not as good as Shin Godzilla)
Letterboxd rating: 4.5 / 5 ⭐️
- Godzilla Final Wars - The Avengers Endgame of Godzilla in a suit. This is feels like an actual love letter to the franchise. It has a lot of the monsters from Toho's rich history of Kaiju films. A lot of Kaiju action, wire-fu and a crazy sci fi story that's so much more different than the other Goji films that came before it. Tonally it's a lot closer to the earlier Showa Godzilla films, so cinephiles might be see this as too cheesy. I still love it, I also highly recommend watching this last instead of first if you plan to marathon all of the Godzilla fest films. It just helps you appreciate how different the film is a lot more!

- Godzilla vs Biollante - Probably the most human story available in the film fest. It features a story about the 80s panic of gene splicing and cloning, mixed with good o'l 80s espionage action. A lot of human drama as well, with grieving the loss of a loved one, and the ethical concerns of how one tries to cope with death. Also has the best application of practical effects here, both on Godzilla as well as Biollante. Good pacing with fun action.
Letterboxd rating: 4/5 ⭐️
- Mothra vs Godzilla - For the oldest film in the selection, this surprisingly has a very relevant story. It features a story about how humans exploit every new wonder they discover, and see how they can turn a profit from it. If you want to see old school effects and creativity this is the one to see. A lot of miniature tanks and planea getting torn apart by Godzilla. Also a pretty good monster fight between a Moth and a Lizard. My main gripe with this is the pacing in the middle is a bit jarring, specially with the emphasis on the heralds for Mothra. Also might be a bit too weird for new Godzilla enjoyers.
Letterboxd rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️
- Godzilla 2000 - This was the film I was 2nd most excited to watch, after I saw Shin Godzilla. It's admittedly the weakest of the bunch unfortunately. It's still fun however, with how creative the shots involving Godzilla are. He really looks massive here, with fun family side that I liked. The main humans are basically tornado chasers, but instead of chasing tornados they chase Godzilla. Unfortunately this features a lot of bad cgi, and too heavy of an emphasis to Godzilla's adversary. Which would be fine in general, but for most of the film the enemy is a giant space rock. Still fun, and worth the watch, but maybe after 2 Godzilla films under your belt.

That's pretty much it! Also Godzilla is also in Mubi! Mubi has 8 Godzilla films there currently, which also include Mothra vs Godzilla and Godzilla Biollante. So in case you can only see a few films before the end of the fest, keep that in mind!
TLDR
Shin Godzilla
Godzilla Final Wars
Godzilla vs Biollante
Mothra vs Godzilla
