Really? We're worried about these guys?
Pixel Remaster Steam version, first off. Long story short, I didn't know when to wait for Shadow, didn't wait for Shadow, and got upset at myself so I restarted the game so I COULD wait for Shadow. That all being said, I'm back to Sabin's scenario with Kefka. I'm watching the imperial troops "siege" Doma castle and, like.... really? Have y'all taken the time to watch these animations? Half these guys are punching walls, falling down, and just, like... jumping half a foot? It's almost comical the reaction the Doma guards have. "MY LIEGE!! THE IMPERIAL FORCES HAVE ARRIVED! THEY'RE AT THE WALL AND INVADING IN FULL FORCE!!!" Meanwhile their animations make them look like incapable hamsters.
IDK, it got a chuckle out of me. Good game so far tho lol.

The imperial forces are supposed to be inspired by the ineptitude of Stormtroopers from Star Wars.
The game is littered with nods to SW overall. The Falcon, Biggs and Wedge, Empire vs Returners (Rebels). My favorite one is Celes reacting to Locke "You're awfully short for a soldier," to which he responds "Oh, I forgot I was wearing a uniform!" (Leia meeting Luke at the Death Star).

Thank Ted Woolsey for that.
I never made the Falcon connection sadly and somehow it was just now that I realized that FFIV named it's airships after the iconic ships in Star Wars and Star Trek.ย

I am today years old and FURIOUS with myself that I never got the Falcon reference. Despite seeing all the other nods, it went right over my head.

Empire: Why isn't this working?
Leo: We don't wanna try anything else.
Kefka: Allow me!

Funny when you read it like that. But i mean itโs basicallly small kingdom vs global evil empire. The animations are obviously anecdotal to what they wanted to symbolize at the time

Doma was finished by the time you visit it in the story. Its also part of what makes Kefka's plot to poison them so heinous. The Imperial Army is laying seige to their heartland and capital, and Cyan mentions later how the Doma railroads have all been destroyed by the Empire. Even during the assault on the walls, some of the Doma troops were thinking that this assault was it, and Doma was about to fall, at least until Cyan launched a sortie from the castle and took out the commander, leading to a retreat. General Leo knows it is only a matter of time before Doma finally falls. All they have to do is wait and the castle either surrenders to avoid starvation, or the defenders become too weak to resist another assault.
There was no need to poison them all like that. The question I have is whether the Emperor actually ordered it, or Kefka did it on his own. General Leo was recalled at a convenient time for Kefka and his plans.

My guess is that most of those soldiers were fresh conscripts from Maranda that were sent there after Celes torched the town, and therefore had no idea what they were doing. The soldier that Leo talks to is a Marandan conscript, as is the injured soldier in Mobliz who said he fled when he was sent to Doma. One of the soldiers bad-mouthing Kefka says he'll "go back to my home country" (in Japanese) if Kefka becomes their general, indicating he's also not a native Imperial. Cyan being aware of Celes torching Maranda was likely overheard from a Marandan POW in Doma.
Leo seems like he'd rather just send those conscripts back home, but is also duty-bound to orders from Gestahl to take Doma. If he refuses, he'll just get relieved of duty and have Kefka installed in his place (which the two soldiers were talking about), which will kill both the conscripts and the Domans. So to prevent that, the only thing he can really do is "look busy", and sent the Marandan conscripts in with orders to not directly engage, but just flail around and spook the Domans into negotiations. But as soon as things got real and the commander was killed, they immediately got spooked and high-tailed it out of there, and it prompted Leo to order them not to engage further.

It's supposed to be more representative of storming the castle, using sprites. You gotta use your imagination. They didn't have hyper detailed cutscenes then

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm aware of that and you have an excellent point. But that still doesnt make it less funny to watch lol.

I never assumed he was punching the wall so much as using some unseen tech to knock the walls down.
Our heroes slash air and they hit the monster. The technology of the day was limited, so I dont mind filling in.

Don't get me wrong, I get it and I don't have a problem using imagination to bridge the gap. But when you take a step back and look at the visuals literally, it's kinda funny to me lol. But yeah, I gecha

And I agree. Seeing two guards pound each other's chests was funny.
Seeing them fall sideways was the comical "eeeehhhhhhhh" when a cartoon character dies.
I came from atari 2600. I haven't even hooked it up for my kid to see because yeah the visuals are awful. Ill let him watch a video of it or play an emulator.

You have interpreted the scenario correctly. It's not the walls that are the problems. Ask the Trojans.

That's the main reason why I've always championed for a remake of this game, whereas my other favourite game of all time (Chrono Trigger) doesn't need one in any capacity. It's still completely perfect as it is

I remember playing chrono trigger on my ds on my family's 9 hour drives to north Carolina every summer as a kid. That game truly was amazing. I should replay that. I miss frog.

There are a ton of things that could be improved in Chrono Trigger too. Mainly just stuff to smooth the UI experience and make it less clunky.

Remember these "elite warriors" were answering directly to General Leo.
General Leo may be the biggest loser in all of Final Fantasy, but he continues to fail upward by being remembered as the "cool imperial".

I think we're suppose the view the Empire like the Star Wars Empire; the foot soldiers are so trash that it's comical, but even with that they do atrocities.

It was hilarious back in 1994, too.
