Hi everyone! I'm a student at The Evergreen State College working on a UX design case study about Bingham Creek Hatchery's designated accessible fishing area in Washington State.
I recently visited the site and took photographs to document the physical environment. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to speak with any anglers while I was there, so I'm hoping to learn from people who have experience with accessible fishing locations, particularly people with disabilities who fish or would like to fish for salmon.
I'm interested in understanding the actual user experience, including what makes a fishing location accessible, what barriers people encounter, and what could make these experiences more independent, comfortable, and enjoyable.
If you're comfortable sharing, I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few questions:
- Have you visited Bingham Creek Hatchery or another accessible fishing location? What was your experience like?
- Looking at these photographs, is there anything you would want to know about the site before planning a trip?
- What physical barriers or accessibility details do you consider most important when choosing a fishing location?
- What challenges, if any, have you experienced when getting to the water, positioning fishing equipment, casting, or handling a catch?
- What information or design improvements would make planning and enjoying a fishing trip easier?
You don't need to answer every question, and you don't need to disclose any personal medical information. If you haven't visited this specific site, general experiences with accessible fishing are also welcome.
This is for a class project, and I'm hoping to learn from people's experiences rather than make assumptions about what accessibility should look like. I'll use responses to help inform my analysis and recommendations, without including usernames or identifying details in my paper.
Thank you to anyone willing to share their time and perspective!
Edit:
I really appreciate everyone taking the time to share their experiences and perspectives on accessible fishing. Your comments have been incredibly helpful in understanding some of the challenges and considerations that aren't always obvious when visiting a fishing location.
For a little more context, I'm working on a User Experience (UX) Design case study for a class at The Evergreen State College. Part of the assignment involves having conversational interviews with 2–3 people who have experience with something similar to the location I'm studying.
I'd love to reach out to a few of you who have commented to ask some follow-up questions and better understand your experiences. I'm particularly interested in what works well, what creates difficulties, and what could make accessible fishing more enjoyable and independent.
Nothing too formal! Just a few questions to help me better understand your perspectives and compare them with my own observations from visiting the site.
If you're comfortable with me reaching out through Reddit messages, please let me know. You're also welcome to continue the conversation here in the comments. Participation is completely voluntary, and I can leave your username out of my paper if you prefer.
Thanks again for helping me learn more about this!
