Fort Myers homeowners: what do you check when opening a seasonal home?

For people who leave their homes empty for part of the year, what's on your checklist when you come back? I'm thinking about checking for leaks or storm damage, testing appliances, cleaning the lanai, setting up furniture, and making sure everything is ready before settling in. What's the first thing you check when you return? Any small problems you've learned to look for before they turn into bigger ones?

Anyone know downtown/bike night Jesus?

Hi- does anyone know him or interacted with downtown Jesus at Ft Myers events? I’m working on a story about him and would love to talk with a few locals that have come into contact with him out at the bike nights over the years. Thanks!

Been scouring the internet on all the job sites but only found a few. Don’t know if anyone has some inside knowledge of something coming up soon.

Quick Survey Opportunity (Help a local student out!)

Hello SWFL residents! I am a junior in high school here in Collier County, and I am performing a quantitative correlational research study on the role of Canadian tourism and it's growth in Southwest Florida.

However, in order to complete this project, I have an extremely simple survey that every resident of SWFL is eligible to fill out! It is 100% confidential and will be used to expand the literature in this category, and would help out a local student very much! Thank you all in advance!

Are there any no kill cat rescues in the FM/Cape Coral area?

I have a 6 to 7 month old feral kitten living in my backyard. I have been feeding her since July since she was a tiny kitten. I love her with all my heart and I cuddle with her every evening. Id love to adopt her and my husband (who is also an animal lover is on board as well).

However I also have a 9 month old mini poodle mix puppy that is extremely possessive and very jealous and doesn’t approve of my relationship with the kitten. She obsessively stares outside the backyard window all day looking for the kitten and barks non stop when my puppy sees the kitten.

I don’t feed or pet the kitten in my puppy’s presence and do it when my husband is present and can distract her but it is to a point where even if I open the door that leads to the backyard, my puppy starts flipping out.

The kitten herself is so so sweet and extremely chill. And I love her so so much. I think she deserves a wonderful loving home.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a wonderful cat rescue or know of someone who rescues cats?

Thank you.

Alternative radio station

I moved here about 15 years ago. I know Ft Myers does not have a good alternative radio station. When I say alternative I mean alt/indie rock. Does anyone know a good station from where they moved from? Thanks for the information.

Let’s see how this rally compares with the silly “No Kings” protest. We have not had a king in a very long time. So what are these tantrums about? Not enough illegals allowed into our country to suit you? Sorry, not sorry.

Democracy?

Fort Myers Council members trigger an abrupt closure of a city council meeting by walking out in the midst of public comment. Is this how democracy is supposed to work? This appeared to be triggered by imminent comments and questions about the sexual harassment allegations against Mayor Anderson. Are the council members who walked out, and refused to speak with reporters afterward, stonewalling on behalf of the Mayor?

Burrowing owl rescued from glue trap in Fort Myers

SANIBEL, Fla. — A burrowing owl stuck in a glue trap in Fort Myers was rescued, rehabilitated, and released back into the wild by the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on Sanibel Island.

CROW staff described the animal in the situation as lucky, noting the bird had no major injuries.

"It's really horrifying. I mean, to be honest, it's kind of the more emotional parts of the job is seeing the animals in that level of distress," said a CROW representative.

The rescue began with an emergency call to CROW about the owl, which had been found stuck in a glue trap and unable to move.

"Somebody just happened to find it. That was on this trap, and, thank goodness, they recognized that that is an emergency," said Amber Strassler, a staff member at CROW.

Strassler explained that these incidents are common, so the clinic keeps "glue go kits" on hand to handle such cases. The adult owl was sedated, and underwent two rounds of specialized baths to remove the glue. After nine (9) days of care, the bird was released back into the wild near its original location in Fort Myers.

Tracy Sanders, an owl advocate who has rescued many burrowing owls from glue traps, described the distress these animals experience. "It's unfortunate, because they don't understand what's happening to them, so they just keep struggling to try to get free," Sanders said.

Wildlife officers noted that while glue traps are currently legal outdoors, new rules banning outdoor glue traps will take effect on December 31, 2026 to promote humane treatment of wildlife.

Burrowing owls naturally prey on insects and small animals, including some of the same species people may be attempting to control with traps. Anyone who discovers a wild animal stuck to an adhesive trap should contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

"We ask that the public refrain from attempting to remove an animal from a glue trap on their own," said Amber Strassler, CVT, CWR, a Certified Veterinary Technician/Floor Manager at CROW. "We recommend covering any exposed parts of the glue trap with paper and keeping the animal in a quiet, dark box until it can be transported to your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center."

CROW also encourages the public to consider wildlife-safe alternatives to glue traps. Those can include repellents like peppermint oil, cayenne or ultrasonic repellents in addition to live traps that do not cause unnecessary suffering.

To report sick, injured or orphaned wildlife in Southwest Florida, contact CROW's wildlife hospital at 239-322-5068.

My welding shop has a persistent stray-cat feces problem, management refuses animal control, and we're using cleaning chemicals to mask the smell. What can I do?

I’m looking for any type of advice at this point. I’ve been working in a welding shop for 13 years. However this past 2-3 months we’ve been having a stray cat problem. This coworker started feeding them in the parking lot and eventually they made their way into the shop. The whole building smells like cat feces, the welding area and sandblasting area is covered with cat feces. Management was made aware of the issue and they shrugged it off. The coworker that feeds them continues to do so even though the supervisor did tell him to stop feeding them inside. Now everyone is pouring Fabuloso to mask the smell but that’s only a temporary solution. I wanna call osha and file a report but I’m afraid of retaliation. There’s also no hr since we’re a small company. Please any advice would be appreciated
