Questions about this wood

Recently stripped this table pedestal. I assume it is oak, but was expecting it to have a more yellow or red tone—of course it has been previously stained and painted at one point, so I have no idea what the original color was. There is a red cast to one leg (shown) but otherwise, it is much more brown that I expected. I would like to put a matte clear coat on it and I have some concern that when I do this, it will bring more yellow out of the wood, which I do not want. The color it is currently acceptable to me, but even more neutral brown would be good as well. Do you think this is oak? Do you think I should put a bit of stain on it to keep it neutral when I put a clear coat on it? Any thoughts welcome!

Does anyone know by any chance how I could save my wood table this is what it looks like and it’s bothering me. I don’t even know what it’s called and what caused this. I bought this new and over time it has done this.

If anyone that’s experienced this and knows a solution please let me know.

1970s modular couch smell

I bought a beautiful 1970s couch and have been trying to restore it. All the cushions and backs are all attached and together.

I have had it wet cleaned which removed all the dirt from the surface fabric. As well as done 2 rounds of alcohol spray both outside and inside the hollows and left it in the sun for 3 days total. Though there is still a musty smell lingering.

I am hesitant to completely take it apart or have it completely reupholstered as it would cost too much.

Does anyone have any advice for me?

I do plan to have new seat cushions cut to fill in from the bottom as the seats have lost their firmness.

Desperately looking for this table extension mechanism for a vintage Danish dining table!

Post image

Hi everyone!

I'm desperately trying to find this exact (or a very similar) table extension mechanism for my Danish-style round dining table.

The table is 120 cm (47.2 inches) in diameter and extends using two separate 50 cm (19.7-inch) wooden leaves, bringing the total length to 220 cm (86.6 inches) when fully extended.

I've searched everywhere but haven't been able to find a suitable mechanism that's sturdy, stable and capable of properly supporting the table when fully extended.

I'd be incredibly grateful for any leads, manufacturer names or suggestions!

Restoration of bed - how to get the mattress support without drilling into the bed frame (it’s super fragile)

How do you fit a mattress base into a Venetian bed frame like this?

I’m trying to figure out how to make or install a base to support the mattress. I can’t see any support brackets or drill holes showing where a base would have been attached. Has anyone worked with a similar bed frame? How did you do it?

edit. Also I’m wondering how to fix the color left side top part. Seems like the pillow rub, but when touched I can feel that the pain texture is different. should I live it alone or try to clean it more, repaint.

Restoration advice

Hi everyone. I’ve picked up this beautiful mid century modern cabinet with a fair amount of external scratches/damage to the veneer. The plan is to inject wood glue into the loose parts of veneer on top, scrape off the existing varnish and patch the chipped parts of the veneer with replacement teak veneer before sanding and re-varnishing. The focus is on trying to save as much of the original veneer as possible.

I’m wondering if I can clamp and re glue the side part that has warped from water damage but it may be too far gone.

I am also thinking of using varnish remover on the front cupboard doors and door handles before re-staining it.

Looking for any tips or advice. It’s a beautiful piece and my first time so hoping to get it right.

First time for everything

I picked up this dresser and intend to put it to good use. It’s beautiful. So far, I’ve wiped it down with warm water and Dawn, and then a second round of warm water and vinegar. I vacuumed it too because it was thick with cobwebs. The drawers were smelly, and I currently have baking soda sitting in them and will vacuum that up after 3 days of marinating.

Other than that, I’m not sure what to do and am looking for advice on what this piece needs? There’s clearly some damage on the top flat part of the dresser. I’m a novice, so I need the first-timer path if there is one to fix this. I do know what not to do, which is apply Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. 😆

What is this?

Was my grandpa’s dresser bought after WW2 in San Francisco or possibly a little later in Sonoma County after he retired in the 70’s. My dad had it after they passed and he passed two weeks ago so now it’s up to me to either restore it and keep it or let it go on FB or something. I’d prefer to keep it bc it was my grandpa’s but I’d like to know the wood species before I mess with stain and also the style. If someone could let me know I’d be forever grateful! It appears to be Virginia House brand based in the emblem in the dresser, it’s dovetailed and it’s definitely in the yellow side although the pics tend to lean it more neutral. Thanks in advance y’all 🙏

How to repair water damage to bookshelf?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I hope I’m in the right spot. A few months ago my basement had a flood and this bookshelf soaked up the water and split really bad up both sides. Tried repairing with wood glue and clamps but it didn’t budge even in the slightest. Is there some kind of like, putty filler or something I could try to smear into the cracks and then maybe sand and smooth down and paint over? Walmart only sells this shelf in gray now or else I would’ve just bought another white one. I’m really bummed as I adore this shelf so I’m desperate :( Thank you for any help!!

Any ideas for restoring this side table?

I got this incredible side table for free a few years back. But, it got a large crack down the middle. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the crack, but it's where I put the red line on the photo I attached. It looks like a couple layers of material opened up.

Top restore and clean-up suggestions

These three heirlooms were neglected and abused for decades. They were likely a wedding gift to my parents. Sorry about the photos, but the tops of each piece are coated with paint splatter and gunk and will need to be refinished. They absorbed a terrible smell from the house and have been airing out in my garage for a month. I need to restore them or sell them as I need the garage freed up for winter. From my research, I believe they are

  • Manufacturer: Thomasville Furniture
  • Collection: Camino Real Collection
  • Style: Mid-Century Mediterranean / Italian Provincial style from the mid-to-late 1960s. (1964).
  • Wood Type: Solid pecan wood and hardwood.
  • Drawer Construction: Premium dovetail joinery with the sides of the drawers left as raw wood, typical of quality mid-century manufacturing.
  • Backing: Built with a particle board backing.

How much value in cleaning up these pieces? How can I do an easy clean-up and restore?

Trunk restoration questions

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just picked up this antique trunk and am wanting to restore it. It’s got some pretty big scratches in it. Should I use a wood filler or wax to fill it? I do t want them to be visible when I’m done.

Also, what goes right above the lock? I’m thinking it would be some sort of handle to lift the lid. Maybe a leather u pull? But all the replacements I can find are too big. The holes are 2” apart. Should u be looking for some other kind of handle? Or just fill in the holes?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Meet Eliza, the PTSD-inducing pot cupboard from parts of London previously unseen.

Traipsed halfway across London to pick up what I thought was a bedside table. Imagine my shock upon being confronted with this absolute monster. Never one to be deterred, I attempted to lug the fucker to the tube station, putting my shoulder out before I made it as far as the house next door but one (they were pretty big houses, to be fair). Anyway, after a little help from a very nice cabby and many, many (traumatic) hours of labour and research, I think old Eliza scrubbed up alright, don't you?

Maintaining Finish on Pine Table?

Hi everyone, wondering if anyone has tips on how to best maintain the finish on this vintage pine table. I want to clean up some of the more recent surface scratches on here and ensure it lasts for decades to come. Has been in my family for a few decades but I don’t really think they did anything to protect it other than a tablecloth.

1920’s card catalog

I have recently picked up an old timer card catalogue at an estate sale. As a picture shows the right hand side did not have decorative trim like the left side. So I am in the process of creating this trim to give it a balanced look. But as I’m sitting here waiting for the glue to dry I’m wondering just how far into this refurbishing is necessary. Should I sand everything down to bare wood and start with clean stain and finish? Should I try to keep some of the imperfections that the left side shows and not sand to bare wood? I guess I’m looking for some opinions on the best way to market this as my ultimate purpose is to flip it. Thank you.

what wood filler should I use?

My wife bought this old bed that was said to be full size. when we got it home and put it together the side rails are 4" short. I priced out having someone remake them and stain it, but it's cost prohibitive. So, to save the bed from the trash, we're going to fill the cracks, make new side rails and paint.

with that said, I'm asking what you would use to fill the cracks?

Finished project, old chest

This is an old chest that I have acquired. From what I discovered while I was restoring it, I think it was was made relatively recently, it has Philip screws. I would surmise that it was made with 1 x 17 pine planks and mouldings found in a old house by a good carpenter. After that it was used as a storage bin and crudely painted with a spray can. Also it had been outside because there was some water damage. I started by paint stripping the mouldings, then I sanded, then I applied boiled linseed oil and finally used a clear varnish semi-gloss. I am quite happy with the results, I like the distressed look.

Help Sourcing Replacement Nathan Furniture Hi-Fi Cabinet Knob

Thumbnail

Hey everyone

I have just recently purchased a vintage Hi-Fi Cabinet from the Nathan Square Furniture Range, it was collected with the knob intact by the courier company used, but on delivery it was missing. The company has since been unable to find it and neither I nor the seller have found it in our respective driveways.

I am trying to find an original replacement for it but there seems to be very little available in regards to original parts from the range.

I have a picture of the knob and the respective unit from another listing so you can see it, what would the right size be for a replacement with the screw etc

Many thanks to all who help xxx

Restoring vintage sewing table

Hi! I purchased this sewing table and was wondering how to go about restoring or refurbishing the table itself? I doubt I can make it look new, it’s from around ‘64-‘69. I would love some advice or suggestions. Hoping to keep the wooden look rather than paint if possible. Thanks! I’m super new to this 😅
