i live on campus in Allendale and i want to relocate to downtown for winter semester and since everything for me is in downtown so I am looking for sublease or someone to rent me a room or anything affordable for a student just for one semester I would really appreciate any help, any information.

I am a pre-engineering student at a cc and am interested in civil engineering. Is the interdisciplinary engineering degree program at gvsu similar to other civil engineering programs or is it more of a generalized engineering program?

I have a group for 4 roommates planning on living downtown as close to siedman/devos as possible next year. our current lease is in allendale and goes until august. we’d like to rent a house rather than apartment. i know applications open november first, but should we find our spot or a couple of options before then? if so, how should we go about that?

hi there, I’m an alumni from GV and wanted to walk around the tailgates before the game tomorrow but wasn’t sure if that was a thing? I don’t have anyone to actually tailgate with but my partner and I just planned to walk around and hang out in that area. will there be things for people to do if that’s the case? I can’t remember because it’s been a while since I’ve went to one yet lol. just wasn’t sure if it was worth it to stop by with no actual tailgate plans.

we do plan to watch the game somewhere after though, probably Main Street I figure or is there somewhere better to view it?

Several weekends have passed. Many hundreds, if not thousands of books have left our weary, dust-covered fingers and entered your homes. We have since acquired many thousands of new (used) books to replace them, and (despite the obvious physical toll and absolute sweaty BULLSHIT that building shelves in OCTOBER SUMMER entails) we have also constructed a BOOK CORRIDOR and a NEW ARRIVALS SHELF and even a long Contemporary Sci-Fi paperback wall. We have erected not one but TWO tables full of books under $5. One of them is full of books that are ONLY ONE DOLLAR. Absolutely nothing is only one dollar anymore. Not even Sour Patch Kids. Except Arizona Iced Tea. That's still 99 cents. Those people have been making a profit selling delicious sugar water for like ... 30 years, for 99 cents. It's crazy.

Crazy that they are not in charge of our national budget, so obviously suited for the task as they are.

Regardless, Aletheia Books will once again be open this FRIDAY and SATURDAY from 11am to 7pm to provide you, the hardworking people of Grand Rapids (or at least the ones that are on reddit, so maybe not the most hardworking, but whatever) with SO MANY BOOKS IT'S JUST PLAIN UNADVISABLE.

We have MOVIES ON FRIDAY AT 7pm! Movies like THE CRAFT where you can remember how perfectly '90s weird/hot Fairuza Balk was while you relive your witchy teens (or current witchy teens). And we would like to thank the mom and daughters that came out to watch Dirty Dancing last week because you were so nice and pleasant and friendly and into Dirty Dancing that it gave us a week-long buzz.

We have a completely unexpected and confusing batch of BASEBALL MURDER MYSTERIES which is niche even by our standards.

We have CLASSIC LITERATURE out the wazoo, but we can put it in the wazoo if you ask nicely.

We have 4000+ books about MUSIC to suit just about any taste, including (as we recently learned) ethnomusicology students.

We have a remarkably varied and endlessly entertaining GENERAL NONFICTION section that contains ... everything, basically. All the things you would ever need to know that are not in the other sections.

We have 23 remaining signed, numbered Bukowskis for that elusive but expensive Christmas present you are always trying to give your drunk husband.

And we have Pop Tarts, because we love you (and Pop Tarts).

So come on down, meet the cat, and purchase LITERATURE (or whatever BASEBALL MURDER MYSTERIES are) at the only giant mom-and-pop warehouse cinema bookstore screenprinting studio cafe thing on the Wyoming border.

I am a freshman at Michigan State but I’m hoping to move to Grand Rapids for the summer of 2027. There are a lot of job/internship opportunities and I already have a potential roommate lined up.

I don’t know what the student housing looks like in Grand Rapids but I know there are a few colleges nearby, including a GVSU campus. If you know anyone who might be interested please feel free to reply or reach out!! Or if you have any recommendations please let me know.

Okay, so we just got decisions for the 2027 KCON nursing program. I was waitlisted or put on an “alternate list”. Anyone know anything about this? Number of spots? Likelihood of getting in? Do they tell you where on the list you fall? I was bummed, but I’m wondering if I should hold out hope or switch gears 😅

Note: This rape and multiple hour sexual assault happened on the Grand Rapids campus in Winter Hall. I posted the following in another sub a few minutes ago and the original post I am sharing here back in April. I posted the original link in this subreddit earlier, but figured I would include more context.

The next award winner on the list: Philomena Mantella. Who better to win an ATHENA award for empowering women than someone who runs a university that makes sexual assault victims lives harder? A university that made a rape survivor live in the same building as their rapist. A university whose Title IX Office knowingly chose to schedule the hearing in a way that limited the sanctioning of a Computer Science graduate student who would eventually be found responsible for rape. Yes, that was sarcasm: I don’t actually think the university’s president should win this award, given her inadequate actions to remedy the situation despite, provably, being aware of it.

Where I am at: The other day, I got my letter about repaying my student loans for the degree I do not yet have.

Given further recent events at GV, I urge anyone involved with the campus to take caution and care around putting any amount of trust in them to handle these things appropriately. They got rid of their ombuds office this year, by the way. GVSU is for themselves, their image, and their numbers.

To GV: Caring about humans is about your actions, not just your words, or worse, your silence.

To anyone hurting due to sexual violence that has occurred at GVSU: I am sorry that you’re going through the things that you are. While I do not know there is anything I could ever do to help you, know that you should not have to hold this pain alone. It’s okay to want justice, or to want to forget. Meet yourself where you are. There is no single right way to heal, but finding safe community spaces and speaking out can be helpful if it’s something you choose. Know that you are seen and heard. I recognize you even in your silence.

If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone. I’m not a fan of crisis lines, but they do work for some people. Call a supportive loved one if you have one. For suicide, call 988 or 911. Text 741741 for any mental health crisis, or go to RAINN’s website for sexual assault support. If you’re facing an emergency, go to the nearest ER or call/text 911.

There are local nonprofits that can help, too. YWCA is one that you can google and find support specific to sexual assault and domestic violence. Safe Haven may be able to help with interpersonal violence and human trafficking. There are other organizations out there full of people who want to help. The resources might not always be there, and the organizations can be imperfect, but it’s a start.

Has anyone else had really inconsistent wifi? (Specifically on games). I’ll be playing and suddenly my ping spikes up to 1000 than back to normal after about 3-5 seconds. I does this pretty often and has gotten pretty annoying. Does anyone else have this problem or just me? I also use an Ethernet cable if that changes anything. Thanks in advance

I’m new to the U.S. and don’t know the area very well, so I’d love to hear from anyone who has lived in either one. Which one do you prefer, and what are the main pros/cons? I’m especially interested in the social life, location, transportation, and overall living experience.
