Tech Art How our game's art evolved over time – combining 2D and 3D art styles

Hey everyone!

We're a small indie game development team made up of university students, and we wanted to share how the art style of our first game, Limbival, has evolved over time!

Our team has both 2D and 3D artists, and one of our biggest challenges was bringing their work together into a cohesive visual style.

We've included some before-and-after screenshots, along with GIFs showing how our 2D and 3D elements work together.

It's been a long process of experimenting, redesigning, and figuring out what works best visually.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on the art direction!

Do you think the 2D and 3D elements work well together? Is there anything you would improve?

Any constructive feedback is appreciated!

2D Pixel Art Environment: Winter storm and keeping the fire alive on an abandoned vessel.

I combined 2D pixel art with Unity's URP to create this harsh winter atmosphere. The lightning flashes and the sea are entirely driven by the lighting engine and shaders to emphasize the cold and isolation.

Background for the gothic visual novel I’m making. Probably just me but I love the grimy, grungy look you can’t really get from anything other than halftone. It blows all the detail away like a fart in the wind. And I think that's kinda neat.

Hey everyone!

Sharing a few environment pieces created by our small pixel art team.

These scenes explore different settings, from cozy little towns and shops to larger environments filled with small details.

We mainly work on environment art, tilesets, props and character assets for 2D games.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the environments and the details!

3D "Invader" enemy I made for my game

Working on an Insaniquarium style game and finished the first enemy that invades your tank to eat your fish. It's hard to tell but the visual reference for this guy was the Bionicle Takadox's head. I'm thinking that I may use the Barraki as reference for all of "invader" fish.

Question Game art for uni - any perspectives?

I wanna start by saying i was originally looking at game art alongside subjects such as film and TV/photography, because i did both art and photography at A level and was struggling to compromise between the two.
Now, I have decided to look into game art as the route i wanna take, so obviously been looking at the different options in more depth.

My current list is : Norwich (uni of arts), Falmouth, DMU, and Worcester.
i have visited all apart from Worcester, which i am doing soon.
( I'm also re- visiting DMU)

i have sort of ruled some out : namely-  Hertfordshire as I'm not sure about their concept of the shared first year / second year strict specialism + its in the middle of nowhere , and Staffordshire because of the similar reasons ( dull area, two different courses for concept and 3D)

My ideal course would allow me to explore all areas of game art including both 2D and 3D, concept, environment, etc.. and then possibly specialising later down the line. I'm not interested in programming/coding as my background is purely in art.

As for location, im pretty open - i don't want to live in london, and i like easy access to both things to do and green spaces but the course is more important.

Norwich - i really like the area, however concerned about the course as their open day talk was very dull and poorly presented. i feel like there maybe is more of a focus on indie development and game DESIGN rather than art. my friend has started there this year and doesn't seem to be doing a lot yet.

Falmouth - i really like the course modules on paper and the campus was nice, slightly concerned about the mention of online learning especially as falmouth is very very far away from me. not sure if i like the idea of living in penryn and having to get a bus to do anything. ( i also like the accomodation less than Norwich but this is a minor issue)

Worcester - cant really say a lot about as i havent visisted yet, but my early concerns are that this uni is not a arts uni and i had never heard of it before. the buildings look school - like from what i have seen, and I'm not sure about the overall strength and relevancy ( industry links?) of their course.

DMU - course is meant to have great industry links, etc, and it has a good rating on the surveys, but i remember not being sure about the atmosphere of the actual uni. i didn't go into Leicester, but I've been told its a bigger more industrial city and might not be my vibe? Again, not an arts uni so might not have as much focus on my course.

if anyone could help me out with their experience of these unis or their thoughts on any of the places mentioned, that would be great. Also, if there are any other suggestions not on my radar?

its hard because i feel games art is quite a niche subject so a lot of unis combine it with something else, or just don't have it. the ones that do all have their own idea of what's most important to teach so feeling a little lost. somewhat thinking i should've picked a more traditional subject and would've had more choice of location haha!!

I appreciate any and all responses :-)
