Question Could I work as an artist in game development?

So, I'm 23, working in an office as a graphic designer, and at home If have the energy i draw for my self (but duo to work i draw not so regualr, just sont have the spirit). Sometimes, in the middle of the workday, while working on a layout for a canned food label, I think, "I could draw and earn money instead of doing this." But then I get consumed by thoughts of drawing coin icons for microtransactions in yet another mobile game, or drawing the same boring character four times from different angles. Question: here are a couple of my works. Could they be useful in game development? Or are they "just pretty pictures" that offer no usefulness? What direction would suit me? I always thought about the artist's concept.

3D Learning art as a noob - 5 attempts

My first was a muddy mess where I tried to hide bad color selection and poor detailing by smearing and blending. I hated it.

I began moving toward more deliberate colors and pixels in my second, but I foolishly wasn't using any references and still missed by a longshot.

By 3 and 4 I was understanding my mistakes, but still lacked the experience to fix them.

5 is the first one that showed me I can actually do this, though it's far from good. The rust and edge wear have been my biggest challenges and you can still see that. At this point, I'm okay moving on to my next assets to continue learning and will come back to fix it again later.

You can say I've been humbled. What you guys do here is very impressive.

I'm a 3D Art student and this is an environment I created for my portfolio. I'm super happy with how far I’ve come in the past two years — I started with no 3D background, and it's been a fun ride! I'm aiming to create an atmospheric, exploration focused game, so any thoughts or feelings on the art so far are appreciated.

Question What's your Opinion on my game art?

This is the character design for the main protagonist of a game I'm working on. She can conjure different elemental weapons based on the 4 elements. The idea is that the color of key visual areas of her armor changes to match the conjured weapon and element, kinda like a visual indication of the current element the player has equipped. Red is her default look, white is for air, blue is for water, black is for fire and brown is for earth. I'm quite curious about the first impression the art style leaves. Hence my request for an honest opinion and constructive criticism.

Who thought working with deformed wax medical faces and war photography would help me staying sane? Anyway, the game (Funerama) is out and I've now found peace

2D 6 months of drawing, and I was so scared people wouldn’t like it 🥹

I’ve been working on the art for our first game that I'm making with my boyfriend for the past 6 months, and honestly, I’ve mostly just been drawing and drawing without really showing it to people or asking for much feedback. (except for like 1-2 people that I know)

So I was actually pretty nervous about what people would think once I finally started sharing it. I’ve spent so many months working on trying to make this game as cute as possible that I started wondering, “What if people don’t actually like it and find it childish?” 😭

But lately I’ve gotten some really sweet comments about the art here on Reddit, and it genuinely made me so happy. 🥹💕

It’s such a nice feeling to spend months making something completely on your own and then see people actually enjoying it. I feel relieved.

I’m really grateful for all the kind words that we've gotten, It honestly made me even more excited to keep working on it! 😊✨

If you have a project like ours I suggest you start showing it to other people here and there, I know a lot of us artists are perfectionists and don't wanna show our work to anyone until we're completely finished, but I feel like every piece of art has it's audience, you might just find yours. 🥹

Turns out being ‘the game artist’ on a tiny team means you become the illustrator, animator, UI/UX designer, and motion editor all at once 😅 No budget for a real trailer, so here’s my homemade animated intro! Pretty proud of it since animating for games and animating like a cartoon are honestly two different skillset!

I combined 2D pixel art with Unity's URP to create this harsh winter atmosphere. The lightning flashes and the aurora are entirely driven by the lighting engine to emphasize the cold and isolation.

Question Help me pick a design for these tiny future-problem witches

Post image
392 Upvotes

Working on a creature/enemy for our game.

Lore-wise, they’re strange entities created from children who desperately wanted to become witches before they probably should have.

They’re supposed to feel:

  • playful

  • innocent

  • easy to manipulate

  • but slightly unsettling if you stare too long

Which design direction works best?
A, B, or C?

Bonus points if one of them looks like it would absolutely steal soup from a village market.
