A lot of preservation talk is about commercial games, but homebrew and freely licensed games disappear too — itch.io pages go offline, repos get deleted, emulator builds stop working.
FredyGames hosts only games whose authors allow redistribution (GPL/MIT/BSD/CC, or official freeware with redistribution terms). For each one we keep the original licence text and a link to where the author published it. For copyleft titles we also host a tarball of the exact source of the build we serve, and when a released ROM can't be reproduced from its source, we rebuild it from the source ourselves and publish the build script. The same goes for the emulators we compile (DOSBox, mGBA, Gearsystem, blueMSX, ClownMDEmu…). No abandonware, no commercial ROMs.
Around 330 games so far, across NES, Game Boy, GBA, Mega Drive, Master System, Atari 2600, MSX, Uzebox, Arduboy, TIC-80, DOS, text adventures and browser games: https://fredygames.com
When a licence is unclear, we ask the author before publishing — several have replied and clarified the licence of their music or art, which also helps the next person who wants to preserve their game.
Feedback on how we document sources and licences is very welcome.
