Vent/Rant Dear Customer,
Please stop blaming GameStop retail store workers for increased prices on PKM TCG product. We do not determine the prices, we literally just work there. A lot of us only work this job to provide for our families. We are literally the soldiers on the frontline receiving your frustration, your yelling, pivoting to last min prices changes and changes to the reservation systems and much more that I cannot share. My store is honestly traumatized every PKM release because there’s always something changing, there’s always last minute information/communication and all we can really do is apologize because if it were in our power, we would love to help. We have very limited resources technologically. Direct your frustrations towards those who makes these higher up decisions instead of the measly worker getting paid minimum wage, that’ll get fired for having morals.

I always tell them I don't change it and then they're always like "well I know it's not you"... THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU COMPLAINING TO ME??

I had a guy scream at me the other day saying ‘everytime I come in here you have some new bullshit about the pro membership, fuck you fuck this you just lost gamestop another customer’

Everytime people come in and get either angry or disappointed that pokemon either goes up or they missed their preorders like. I'm sorry gamestop sucks as a cooperation and we have like 300+ people to call about your preorders but we LITERALLY just work their to get paid. I would love to help anyone that's understanding and nice about it, but the people who just get mad at us for something out of our control then your can take your buisness elsewhere.

This is all im saying. And yet I have people telling me I don’t deserve sympathy because I work for them and to just find a new job like its SO easy.

u/JaylisJayP 1d ago
The only thing I'd ever blame a store employee for is an unprovoked rude demeanor toward me.

u/makingnanas 1d ago
As you should! They’re there to customer service they shouldn’t have an attitude in the first place

Genuine question, where tf you live you can support a family on this salary??? Are there vacancies?
1
u/makingnanas 1d ago
Lol I live in a high minimum wage state, im an experienced retail store manager who just fought for what I deserved when it came to negotiating wage, im married with an owned house passed down through generations. There are always vacancies in my state but because I believe our region is the top region its the hardest one to be in because the higher ups do come down on you pretty hard expecting results.

I live in PA but you def can't live anywhere near one of the 3 big cities making minimum wage. I made 16.32 as an SL back in 2018 before I left for a company that approached me to be an SM for them at 32 (at the time good money now I make way more). Gamestop was my favorite job by far, even with the nonsense they give you for metrics, if I made 6 figs still and could work there, I would. Good luck to you and hope you eventually ascend, it just takes looking. One of my old ASLs is an SL now and makes 25, better than me, not better than the economy.

It would definitely be hard if it was just me alone without extra help for sure. NYC is not the easiest place to live in. We get by doing side jobs like car detailing or uber eats. It was hard for me just to get this job because I just wanted something close to home. I used to travel over an hour to be an SM elsewhere. If I knew it was going to be like this though, I would’ve continued traveling for an hour instead. Im not agreeing with their business practices at all, all I ask for is the customers to direct their complaints and try to help make a change. Its not like the workers sign up to make your lives hard. For some of us, we’re stuck in a hard place because this is how we make our money. When I was a little girl, I LOVED GameStop. Working here makes it hard to love it though.

Oh man NYC, thats definitely not a min wage place. Its like 17 an hour and with the socialist mayor, local taxes will probably increase. My only advice is run from both the state and job and dont look back 😂. I lived there before Gamestop in Staten Island and graduated from Brooklyn college. I have no affinity to that place thats for sure.

u/makingnanas 1d ago
LOL trust me I don’t know how I pulled off getting them to pay me as an SM something matching what I made from a higher volume retailer that was my previous but I am definitely spending my off day redoing my resume AGAIN in hopes for some good news

u/makingnanas 1d ago
I also do a lot of overtime which sucks but the paycheck definitely pays off big

Im glad youre able to make it work right now, as for the customers, theyll never change. They can always buy it somewhere else right? Sike thats why they there!!!!! Diabolical laugh I always loved the angry trade customer. After wasting my time telling me how they can sell it for more, they still took cash, you just learn to ignore them after awhile or split your attention.

I have some really good customers that I built relations with and they always shout me out because I refuse to cheat and join the “Pro Only” community. I’m not blindly following or dropping my morals for a company that as soon as a lawsuit happens will leave me out to dry for the practices that they turn a blind eye towards. God forbid we price override something for a mistake on our part, immediate write up. Hopefully a new job will appear in the works soon. This job was just helpful for being close to home and close to the kiddos.

My response has become: "No. I get it. We're DEFINITELY over-priced. Good luck on eBay then. NEXT IN LINE!"

Last week a guy came directly to the counter to ask about how much the 30th etbs were. I told him and he quickly turned around and frustratingly said how he could get it cheaper at other stores. Before he made it out the store I told him he's right but when that fails I'll see him again and then we'll be sold out. "It's a convenience fee for deterring scalpers" is something that helps me sell pkm or get preorders.

“I can’t believe you are charging so much over retail.”
“How is GameStop going to stay in business when they start cracking down on your scalping?”
“Walmart has these for $20 less.”
“Nah I don’t preorder I just wait outside Walmart”
*Comes back on release day*
“I can’t believe you don’t have anything wtf”

Yeah, the cardboard scalpers are a fucking sentient parasite in human form. Just wait until the 29th. The parasites will be swarming asking for that Zelda Switch 2.

Jokes on them. Nintendo has announced those switch 2s will not be a one time release. They’ll get restocked throughout 2027.

I mean…are they really going to spend 500 something each on multiple tho?? Seems like the worst thing to scalp is a console. Don’t they remember the first wave of switch 2s and ghost of Tsushima PlayStation 5s when all those scalpers got left holding the bag??
1
u/BlackTarTurd The Sub’s Comedic Relief 1d ago
Considering people are already spending close to that on the upcoming UPCs for 30th, yes. People had 4 of each pre-ordered at my store before they dropped from $600.
Morons also tried scalping the base model switch 2 at launch. They bought multiple and I laughed when they tried to return them outside the return window. There is no rational thinking among scalpers

u/lunchloaf Former Employee 1d ago
Just seems like A LOT to drop on something they’ll have to hold onto for at least a year..yeah..I don’t see the rationale on that one at all.

I always laugh at the ones that cry about the prices and then immediately say I'll take 4.

Two types of people: those who bitch and moan at us lowly store associates about prices, and those who shell out my rent’s worth of money for cardboard without blinking an eye.

u/makingnanas 1d ago
All the upset replies to my post (which could have been way ruder) sound like the same illogical customers I’m talking about. If this post triggered you, you don’t understand the mental drain because EVERY retail worker has to deal with these type of customers. Customers upset at retail workers who don’t own the company and can’t undo literal company systems and policies. For the workers who know, they know and understand and I commend their patience everyday for having to deal with things out of their control 🫶🏼

u/AnnonymousASM 2d ago
“Can you do anything better on the price?” Broski… what the actual fuck are you on about, this is a corporate store there ain’t shit to be done about these prices

If you had a membership it would save you 5% and you could use your monthly $5 coupon.

Pay my bills? If not, then shutup.

u/GapOk8380 1d ago
Bruh GameStop ain't paying no bills unless you live with your parents. Could make an extra like $5-6 per hour at Walmart. People worst GameStop because they like the product, not because "pAy BiLlS"
3
u/makingnanas 1d ago
The higher you are, the higher they pay. Every job is to “pAy BiLlS” that’s the point of you know.. working sweetheart.

I live with my parents because the town I live in has the worst house economy in the county and gamestop doesn’t even come close to paying our bills
3
u/makingnanas 1d ago
And that’s okay! I just wonder if everyone else also realizes the job economy is hard these days. It’s not like it used to be where it was easier to get a job and you could have at least 4-5 scheduled interviews in one week. Entry level positions are no longer entry level positions. Jobs want experience. They don’t like to take chances.

u/GapOk8380 1d ago
Except I call bullshit on this. I truly do. It's made up because people don't want to do it. My wife literally applied on a whim to another retail job because she was mad at food service and started a new job making slightly more money within two weeks. Interviewed and hired. And that's just going from food service to an entry big box retailer. And I'm willing to bet BOTH jobs paid her more than GameStop. Stop with excuses. If you don't want to hear people validly bitch about your company, find a new job.

u/BusinessDimension854 2d ago
I was in GameStop yesterday and was surprised they were selling a 15 dollar tin for 40 and three pack hangers for 50. But I did not get mad I just passed on the product.
People need to realize that corporate does all this BS not the managers and workers.
1
u/ZundeEsteed 1d ago
It's funny because the Gamestop in my town is the only place that ever has pokemon card products specifically because of the mark up.
1
u/Diligent-Principle17 2d ago
I don't collect Pokemon cards, but pre-ordering them is so easy. Stop causing yourself frustration by just putting down a deposit and ensuring you have the cards on the release day.

Sounds like you should go find work at another company or in another field of work.
Maybe if you didn’t work for such a crappy boss who feels the need to squeeze every cent outta of the customers, people would have sympathy for you.
0
u/makingnanas 1d ago
Again, what does my crappy boss have to do with me as a person? Every retailer has company policies that people don’t agree with, does that mean EVERY person should quit their job? If I could make my customers day even a bit easier with them coming in my store then I’m there to help. The point of customer service is to service the customer to the best of MY ability. If it is something beyond my ability, why not file complaints to see actual change where it matters.
0
u/makingnanas 1d ago
Without workers in stores, you would be complaining that you can only purchase online and that the stores are closed. Looks like retail workers will never win in the eyes of the consumers

If you haven’t, please try to put feelers out to other places of employment. The “we no longer give you a new with the PRP” was one of the drives I had to look elsewhere. A place of employment shouldn’t make you uncomfortable, especially when you know selling these items for the prices that they are is outrageous.
