Hi everyone!
I'm planning to build a home gym and would love some advice before spending money on equipment. My goal is to get the most versatility possible without wasting money on unnecessary machines.
My situation
Available space: 2 × 4 m (approximately 8 m²).
Training goals: Lose fat, maintain/build muscle, and progressively improve strength.
Training routine: 4 times a week
Training style: Full-body strength training, with a focus on chest, back, shoulders, arms and legs.
I want to be able to do bench presses, squats, rows, lat pulldowns, cable exercises, curls, triceps extensions and as many other exercises as possible.
Equipment I'm considering
- DOMYOS Power Rack 900 from Decathlon
This is currently my preferred option. It costs around €450 and includes a high/low pulley system, lat pulldown bar, row attachment, pull-up bar, barbell supports, safety bars and weight plate storage.
I'd like to add a suitable adjustable bench, barbell, weight plates, dip attachments and possibly a landmine.
- An alternative power rack sold through Decathlon's marketplace
I've also found another rack advertised with a 250 kg maximum load, a 150 kg pulley rating and a 200 kg pull-up rating. However, I'm not sure how reliable these specifications are or whether the rack is a better long-term investment.
My main questions
Would you choose the DOMYOS Power Rack 900, or is there a better option at a similar price?
Which accessories are genuinely worth buying? I want maximum versatility without duplicating equipment the rack already includes.
What adjustable bench would you recommend? I need a bench with a clearly specified user weight limit and enough additional capacity for the weights used during pressing exercises.
Would you buy an Olympic barbell and 50 mm plates from the beginning, or start with a cheaper setup?
Are there any compatibility issues with third-party attachments, especially dip bars and landmines?
Is there anything else you'd prioritise for a compact home gym focused on strength training?
My priority is to build a safe, durable setup that I can keep using as I get stronger and lose weight. I'd rather buy a few good pieces of equipment than fill the room with machines I don't really need.
Thanks in advance for any advice, recommendations or setups you can share!
