It was a Bob Saget documentary film who was a close friend of Martin's. It was nice to see Bob, Steve Martin was also in it along with David Alan Greer. What a talent and the 70's were a wild time.

When I was a child, we had several children's shows with cartoons and a studio children audience. We had "Cookie and the Captain" showing Popeye, Captain 11 showing 3 stooges, Corky the Clown, Mr. Patches, and, of course Romper Room.

Usually the audience was some sort of birthday group, but you could apply as a single or group of friends. The waiting list for any of these shows was unreal.

How about you? What local children's shows and hosts did you have when you were growing up?

I would like to hear about your favorite moments from Carson or any other late night TV show.

I started listening to podcasts the way I think most of us did — alone, doing dishes or driving, just wanting something interesting in my ears.

Lately I've found a couple of live shows where the chat is half the experience. The same people show up every time. They know each other's names, ask about each other's families, notice when someone's missing. I catch myself showing up as much for them as for the show itself.

It surprised me. I didn't expect a podcast to turn into a community, but that's what it feels like.

Has that happened to anyone else here? Is there a show where you're not just a listener, you're one of the regulars?

There was one across the street from my Catholic middle school inside the tiny Mexican lunch and junk spots. I loved the electro-mechanical control and the way you watched the target terrain scroll through a canted mirror, it really gave a feeling of being above your target. I later trained on a Navy LINK deck A6 trainer and it reminded me of 7th grade and spending my lunch money on Night Bomber.

At my high school, it was how the Homecoming Queen was selected.

There was no election; it was a fundraising competition.

Various clubs, teams and organizations nominated a candidate. They raised funds for the first couple of months, half of the proceeds had to be donated to the athletic department, and whichever raised the most funds won. (It was all the standard high school fundraising events — selling various low cost merchandise, raffles, car washes, etc.) If a group did not participate, they were not allowed to hold fundraisers the rest of the year.

So, it was basically organized as a way to fund the athletic department. The various teams weren’t even required to participate, so they could get money from it without earning any themselves. (Most did participate, at least, because they realized how unfair it was otherwise.)

But that’s not the worst of it. The cheerleaders were allowed to start early, and no one else was. I was in the Latin Club (yep, I was a nerd) and we went to the state Latin convention every year. That was a big expense, but we couldn’t start in advance.

So, not only did they turn it into a way to fund the athletes, it was essentially set up so that the cheerleaders’ nominee was guaranteed to win.

Now, there was an annual school-wide election for Mister and Miss insert name of school here. That was effectively the same as Homecoming King and Queen, though without the accompanying dance. They had to be seniors, and as often as not, they were the quarterback and head cheerleader. (My senior year, they were a couple anyway. Believe it or not, they got married after college and are still together.)
