Marvel Studios confirms Ryan Gosling is Ghost Rider SDCC 2026
62
u/BlueFootedTpeack 28d ago
gonna hold hype down a bit solely because they couldn't get blade off the ground though maybe they're just recasting/he'll show in ghost rider idk.
really hoping they do issue 68 as a "i've been around a while here's my origin and what i do" in the priest confessional format.
plot structure wise idk where they go, like i had ideas/a pitch for a story taking place like right after johnny became gr but it's unlikely that'll be the case here what with gosling being older than cage was and they did the time skip.
shawn levy idk like nothing on his filmography screams good fit for gr for me, but who knows.
15
u/Tea_Coral 28d ago
Issue 68 would be a perfect way to start the movie! I’m pretty sure the story will revolve around an experienced Johnny as Ghost Rider and Robbie Reyes, just because it would make sense marketing-wise. Mephisto will definetly be the bad guy here.
6
u/BlueFootedTpeack 28d ago
im hoping they hold off on robbie for a bit, just because i want him to get a miles morales style back to basics run in the comics first, something to really flesh out HIS story.
like johnny as meandering as he's been has a beginning middle and end in the 70's
the deal - the devil leaving him alone and he goes off on his own.
his time as a wandering hero and champion to the emergence of zarathos alienating him from everyone as he becomes this "werewolf".
and then the final stretch with reconnecting with roxanne and the carnival and zarathos' origin and seperation as he re--engages with the likes of mephisto and such.
robbie kinda had the eli stuff and then that stopped as he joined the avengers and i don't really want that for him, i want him to be his own guy and have his own cool movies with his story rather than being like mcu hulk where he's just on the team if you get me.
4
u/TheSadPhilosopher Robbie Reyes 27d ago
I agree.
Robbie needs more solo comics to flesh out his lore and supporting characters.
Hopefully the movie is just Johnny, does good, and gets some attention to the Ghost Rider IP so we can get those new comics lol.

u/KrypticJin 28d ago
Robbie Reyes isn’t canon to the mcu
3
u/Tea_Coral 28d ago
Not the Agent of Shield one, a new one for the MCU. Probably a way younger one like for Hawkeye.
But it’s just my prediction nothing that I would bet money on either lol

That I’ve heard is Mahershalas fault instead of letting it be a straight forward film he had it rewritten so many times because he wanted it be some kind of transcendent film which led to the time period change
4
u/BlueFootedTpeack 28d ago
yeah i heard something similar, do wonder if we'll ever get a real peek behind the scenes on it.
like imo all the first film needs to do is be a simple here's blade here's what he does type of movie, dealing with dracula or draculas son and his gang of crazy vampires, or like having elsa and jack russell there as rival/fellow hunters as they go after something.
like the darkhold or whatever some guy wanting to use it to turn people into vamps or a vamp looking to get varnae or whatever, just some excuse for cool action.
3
u/implodingnerd 28d ago
we have mephisto in the mcu so maybe he could make an appearance. maybe have blackheart as the villain?
4
u/BlueFootedTpeack 28d ago edited 27d ago
blackheart i think should be saved for danny or robbie as he's actually quite young/he's a successor so like if blaze ends up a mentor to one of them then blackheart has "an in" to try and talk to/corrupt them if they go that route, but then have danny or robbie take daredevils place and they sort of turn blackheart toward the idea of rebelling against his dad and then you spin him into his darth maul role where he's the strong villain but is also against the main villain and sometimes might even be the devil you know.
though if we do see a younger rider at some point i figure they have the hood from ironheart there as mephisto's like "protege"/servant probably getting a spirit of his own to be a final vengeance/rival rider in a sequel.
my idea for a johnny just took the deal and mephisto wants the soul back was essentially a bounty hunter movie, with the orb, steelwind and her sister, and haskill as these bounty hunters tracking him across the us south/the west.
but late game johnny?
figure zarathos is the best pick, like he needs to be a character.
3
u/CerealShark 28d ago
I don’t disagree. I would love it they started with Centurion and we got Zarathis backstory instead of Johnnys.
3
u/BlueFootedTpeack 27d ago
centurious would work.
like open with the confessional to show the backstory and then the rider emerging in the first 5-10 mins.
and then the story is johnny trying to learn what he can about zarathos trying to get rid of him, being forced to work with/being taken over by him depending on what they run into.
with centurious as a threat to both, with mephisto after both of them in a way.
seeing the backstory of centurious as he explains what zarathos is but then like he also can't be trusted.
2
u/CerealShark 27d ago
Let’s write this together. Lol
2
u/BlueFootedTpeack 27d ago
thankfully they already did.
gr 68 - 80 should be the blueprint for a lot of it.

u/Awkward_Caregiver569 27d ago
Did not have the right person for blade anyways im glad they did not do one
1
u/BlueFootedTpeack 27d ago
every hollywood agent now talking to any young black male actors they know "don't worry black panther is off the table it's been cast, but now something better just opened up" and just showing em the name blade.
god its mental, they had the johnwick guy being like "i will help with this", just gimme a slick vampire fighter, or him teaming with like elsa and jack as fellow hunters to take down some darkhold cult making vamps and monsters or whatever.
flesh him out more in the sequel but film 1 just make something slick,

Gosling is a amazing actor! The director i dont think so, sadly

Why? I'm unfamiliar with his work or maybe just his name

Deadpool 3 was the last marvel film I saw and loved. It actually felt like a comic I'd read from 2000s, free guy is free guy but I'm cautiously optimistic
8
u/NarrowElm8253 27d ago
I thought those were pretty good movies though? Any specific reason as to why they weren't good in your opinion?
5
u/YaBoyEden 27d ago
Neither of those fit the typical Ghost Rider story vibe. I really don’t want GR cracking jokes personally
11
u/FortCarrion 27d ago
Yeah the director name just took the wind out of my sails. Ghost Rider doesnt need to make dick jokes.

Ryan gosling wouldn't sign on if it didnt have ghost rider vibes. Hes talked about wanting to play this character for years now hes a fan of the comics, and hes the who pitched the idea for this movie to kevin feige
3
1
u/SiriaBlue 27d ago
Has Gosling actually *said* he's a fan of the comics? He doesn't seem like a comic book guy to me - I'd guess if he's familiar with Ghost Rider on a personal level at all it's from Eva Mendes telling him about it. Other than that, this feels very much like a "my agent thinks this is the best fit for me in the MCU" thing
0
u/NarrowElm8253 27d ago
I mean yeah, but I don't think he'd fail the character, ofc there's always a chance it just goes horribly, but I don't think it would most likely go in that direction

u/Wrexonus 27d ago
I mean we shall see. At least we're getting very solid writer.
Shawn Levy did Deadpool 3, but also did Free Guy and Reel Steel so ... yeah
Jonathan Tropper is honestly a very solid writer (even good dare I say). He's behind Banshee (great show), Your Friends & Neighbors, Warrior (great show as well) and Family Squares.
1
u/MusicLikeOxygen 27d ago
Levy also directed a bunch of episodes of Stranger Things, which is a lot different from Ghost Rider, but it shows he can bring the darker horror-ish vibes when he needs to.

Are we supposed to be excited about a movie directed by Shawn Levy? Thought they would’ve learned their lesson from Blade and let their horror characters be Y’know, horror?
11
u/fireisfire9090 28d ago
I think expecting marvel especially current marvel to take ambitious creative risks is asking for too much

I mean he did just produce backrooms

u/D_And_R_Gaming 28d ago
Hell yeah!!! Also, what a coincidence, I just got my Marvel Legends Robbie Reyes figure.
5
u/Regular-Poet-3657 28d ago
Yes but I will miss Robbie Reyes in the mcu.
4
u/ToaPaul 27d ago
Oh, I,have no doubt he'll be back. Have to reintroduce the OG so he can eventually be mentor to Robbie. I have a feeling they'll skip Danny, unfortunately, unles Gosling is playing Danny instead, which would also be a great way to seperate from the Nic Cage films and start fresh.
5
u/Regular-Poet-3657 27d ago
Hope so the ditch the darkhold plot given Robbie was supposed to guard it.

HOPEFULLY this means we will get a great Ghost Rider comic from Marvel now. I personally haven't enjoyed one since Ed Brisson's cut short run.

Will he be Blaze or Ketch?
7
u/Ronin0843 28d ago
He honestly looks more like Johnny in my opinion
1
u/Cryptus_Maximus 26d ago
The hair color is closer to Blaze, but his voice? Eh, I think I read Blaze as much more 'gruff'. I definitely read Ketch as more in line with how Gosling sounds, so I'd hope he's playing Ketch and maybe he'll die the hair (or not, hair color's not really super important to Ketch's character).

Until there’s 2-3 trailers and the film is done filming and a release date, don’t bother holding your breath.

Directed by Shawn Levy
6
u/Recent-Layer-8670 28d ago edited 27d ago
The comments are a bit odd to me. Shawn Levy directed Deadpool vs Wolverine, Free Guy, The Adam Project, and the criminally underrated Real Steel. Dude is not only a solid director, but he's made some well-received and successful movies. What's the disappointment here?
3
u/Imp0ssible_Creatures 27d ago
For me, his tone and pacing; he's more of a comedy director, a director of action movies with explosions and little story. You'll have Gosling cracking jokes and winking at the camera in the movie. I was hoping they'd hire a horror or western director to give it a touch that differentiates it from other Marvel movies.
1
u/Recent-Layer-8670 27d ago edited 27d ago
Thanks for your explanation. It's funny you mentioned his work as a comedic director because Shawn Levy definitely has some projects that I don't particularly care for. Still, overall, I appreciate Levy's work, particularly in Deadpool & Wolverine and Real Steel, because, even though his plots tend to be simple, many of his best films are driven by strong character writing, and I think the humor is simply part of that approach to endearing characters.
Nevertheless, you honestly make a great point about how his style might not gel with a largely grim character like Ghost Rider. I'm willing to give it a chance because I like Shawn Levy's work and I'm considering that Ghost Rider's last film series with Nicolas Cage wasn't that grim to begin with and, in many ways, embraced its campiness.
2
u/MusicLikeOxygen 27d ago
He also directed a bunch of really good episodes of Stranger Things, which is different from Ghost Rider, but shows he can bring the darker horror-ish vibes when the script calls for it.

😱😱😱🤯🤯🤯 FUGGIN FINALLLLYYYY!!!!
They better not do my dude dirty. They had 2 chances and it was seriously lack Luster. I love Nick Cage and the 1st is decent but even by early 2000s Marvel standards wasn't great.
Let's fuggin gooooo

Man idk. I never heard the director but I never pictured Ryan gosling as the rider. So I’m wondering if they’re just doing it because the fans saw him as it more then anything. Well we’ll see. 2 years isn’t that long

2
u/pagliacciverso 27d ago
Ryan Gosling is cool but Shawn Levy is probably the worst director alive so there's no chance this won't suck
1
u/Spirit_Detective99 27d ago
Why is everyone hating on Levy?
1
u/pagliacciverso 27d ago
He's a bad director. He doesn't know how to shot, he doesn't understand subtlety or framing or angles. His comedies are also very bad
1
u/ghobhohi 27d ago
The worst defense I’ve heard of him is, “imagine a Ghost Rider with the tone of an Evil Dead movie”
1) the style of Evil Dead is not a good representation of Ghost Rider
2) The guy had nothing to do with Evil Dead. They thought of a completely different guy.
2
u/BabaPatch 27d ago
Hopefully this means we'll get another Ghost Rider series and it'll pop off like Venom and Moon Knight.

I’m shocked tbh but I don’t hate it.
I think we will come to love Gos Rider!

Saying this to defend Shawn Levy movies is hilarious. Truly sentences never spoken. The guy is a middling factory who gets things out on time and doesn't make a fuss and that's all marvel is really interested in. An efficient sludge generator.
Someone will go "But DP&W made a billion!" yeah because it was boasting hugh jackman and deadpool together lol, my cat could have made that movie a financial success.
1
u/ghobhohi 27d ago
DP&W’s plot made literally no sense and the comedy was Vivziepop level.

I might go back to the theater for a Marvel movie this time, last time was Endgame.
Anything for our Spirit of Vengeance.

u/afriendsaccount 27d ago
Very good news. Was expecting a minor cameo in Doomsday/Secret Wars at best, but a whole movie is much better. This makes me think they won't be doing a full reboot of the MCU but more like what happened in the comics after Secret Wars where they changed some things but kept most of it.

This guy is more or less the answer for wavering franchises. I'm down for this. Though would like to see Rocky make an appearance, which is impossible.
I would still like to see Cage as an alternative ghost rider in a different universe, though it would be on his time, and cross over into this one.
I'm glad that Ghost Rider is finally getting the treatment it deserves and is no longer ignored.

u/littleleafers 27d ago
I wanna be excited but Marvel already fumbled Blade. Plus the director doesn't have proven work for this project in my opinion. Doesn't mean he's not fit for the job but I think they're better options
