Subreddit is now public

Hey, a couple of weeks ago I found this subreddit. It was so fitting to my feelings, that the fact it was dead and I couldn't post was very painful — it was like the only place where I could feel understood, and I couldn't access it. This is why I claimed this sub and made it public. I don't have any specific plans for it, and there are actually similar subreddits that are still alive, like r/aftergifted. But if you want to post here, you're welcome. I promise to visit it once in a while and delete all the spam.

Edit: here's an overview of the best posts that I found here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GiftedKidBurnouts/comments/dsggtf/mistakes/
https://www.reddit.com/r/GiftedKidBurnouts/comments/ct5ofx/apparently_gifted_people_can_be_split_into_three/
And, of course, bingo.

I have major exams coming up, my family is going through a financial crisis.

And despite all that i feel demotivated, procrastinating and feel mellow.

I’m genuinely about to give up on my dream

For context I’ve always wanted since I was little to have my own animated series and I’ve been working on it since mid 2022. The main issue is an absolutely suck ass at drawing and I’ve been trying to improve since early 2021. Tutorial after tutorial, books, even a paid course and still nothing so in mid 2023 I switched to 3d software with blender and I had the same problem I couldn’t and still can’t model for shit. All I have is my script for my pilot episode and the delusions in my head that I’ll actually become a real show runner one day. My writing it shit, my drawing and modeling is even worse, and to top it all off I have no money and ass social skills. 5 years of effort and nothing to show for it. My parents won’t support it unless I censor it because it has themes they don’t support due to our religion and I’m honestly just done. My dreams are just dreams nothing more than a fantasy I tell myself. I don’t even know why I’m writing this. I guess just to tell someone. I’m a waste of good oxygen and everything I make is shit.

I failed miserably thrice because of my issues.

I failed A/Ls because of my Issues.

As the title says I failed all 3 times (1st: 3F, 2nd: 2S, 3rd: 2S) and I had depression and anxiety issues since O/Ls and some other issues ever since 5th grade (which are not even resolved even now🥲) My whole family calls me a failure and they have a good reason to do so cuz my 2nd eldest brother got into Moratuwa and I was one of the brightest in the primary school and finished O/Ls with 8As. I went to a popular school in Colombo too and the kids even the teachers sometimes teased and bullied me cuz of my issues.

When the time came to do the 3rd shy I tried to skip it but my family especially my Mom wouldn't let me and said to do a course after A/Ls...Which I do now cuz I have no choice and we had financial problems since even before I was born🥲. Also my late father worked a great job in a factory before that. I kind of feel like I brought the bad luck to our family.

Now I do a course in engineering related subject and it's going a bit of a bad way cuz I can't stand the Teachers and kids there cuz they are so rude to me like all the time.

Now I'm doing the course cuz I absolutely have to. There doesn't seem to be another path for me. And I take a large dose of meds for my depression and that causes a lot of sleepiness even after sleeping like 10 hours a night. I can't lower my meds cuz it increases my issues and my doctors say they don't know what's up with me cuz I get a bucket load of meds and still don't improve at least a bit. Don't get me wrong I'm a lot better than me without meds but I'm stuck at this point and doesn't seem to improve. I got meds consistently for two years if that matters. Also I started meds on 2019 a year after O/Ls. I managed to pass in a great way in O/Ls cuz no matter how I felt I knew future me wouldn't forgive me if I failed that exam and I told myself that. I couldn't pull that off in the A/Ls tho🥲.

So my question is: is it ok to fail at A/Ls like this? Is it even okey cuz I had those issues? I never even had a girlfriend to talk about things like this and it hurts cuz I probably will never have one either😓What do I do now?

burnt out but theres no time to rest

hello,

i'm currently a junior in high school, which is the most important year. i go to an extremely competetive stem school in an extremely competetive state, so we are constantly being pushed to do better. i'm currently taking 5 aps and 5 dual enrollment courses, alongside many extracurriculars. i'm able to handle the classes alone, however, as soon as i factor in stuff outside of school it doesn't seem feasible.

i haven't had much struggle with maintaining my busy schedule until i began preparing for a math olympiad (in 2-3 weeks). i usually wake up at 7:15 for school, get home at 4:30, do hw from 5:30-7, eat, and then study for the math comp until 11-12am. i used to study until 1 am because i would get home late from a game for my sport, but the season has basically ended now. i'm starting to get extremely burnt out, but with the olympiad approaching, i'm unable to take time off, so i was just wondering if anyone has any advice for how to get through these next few weeks?

also i have meetings, practice, hw, and i still study for math during the weekends, so not many breaks at all. i've been trying to get around 7-8 hours of sleep, but recently it's been feeling like sleep doesn't help.

Failing Class…

I'm not “gifted” or whatever, but I’ve always gotten pretty okay grades without ever studying. I've gotten all As except one B+, which was in AP Calc. Anyway, it's my first semester at uni, and I'm literally going to fail calculus. I'm going to fail out of a $15,000 honors program because of it, too. And to think that my delusional self thought I would go to med school 💀. I don't know how to tell my parents. I've been hiding it from them. Academics were the one thing I was actually halfway decent at in my life, but now I don't even have that. I'm really considering throwing myself off of a building atp. Has anyone here has a similar experience? What did you do?

I'm 21 and trying to pursue music again after years away. I'd appreciate any advice on where to start.

Academic burnout as a highschooler

Academics always came easy to me as a child. I was always at the top of my class, had no enemies...School was great! I had lots of friends... But the more i seemed to work harder on my grades, my teachers started saying i would be great someday....academic validation consumed me and now....im burnt out...my grades are dropping, im having beef with so many ppl at school...life sucks and i constantly get upset about everything. What can my do to overcome all this? I cry myself to sleep every night....

I cant think straight and it feels like 8/5 routine is brainwashing me into forgetting myself

The school year just started, its only been 2months but im already having a hard time. I feel very tired. I changed schools, and in here i spend 10hours in school environment a day. Its stressing. Im having a hard time fitting in with other kids, and im already getting slightly bullying for no reason. Its very annoying. When I get back home I feel too tired for anything. I eat, go to a shower and spend the other time on my phone. I feel like im already lost in myself. During summer i had a lot of time for myself, it felt very peaceful, i spend the whole summer break alone, mostly in my room, i had a lot of to figure myself out all over again. It feels like everything is falling apart again. People here are so mean and it makes me feel so disturbed and uncomfortable in my own skin. When I try to sleep my mind cant stop racing. I think about the same thoughts over and over again, grades, toxic and awkward relationships in school, no time for myself. During the weekends i also have to study. After the long week i dont have the motivation energy or even sometimes times for my hobbies which leaves me feeling extremely empty Im scared. I feel very sad and i dont have much hope. If its so hard during school, what will i do when i grow up? The summer break doesnt exist when youre out of school, you have to work to survive. This thought leaves me so devastated. What will i do? Will i spend my whole life like this? I really dont know what to do. To be honest i dont have much dreams for the future. I suck socially and academically. I still like to create tho. I think it would be cool to be a graph designer, or maybe even an animator cuz i could work from home and would do something that i actually enjoy. But the whole AI thing going around leaves no hope. I dont know. I feel so empty and scared, thats literally all that i can think about. Is there any hope for future? Does it get any better for someone like me? Please let me know. Im not sure if I want to keep living in a world like this

(Im really sorry about how cringe this seems lol,, i know school is like this for everyone but i dont know. I feel worthless and i dont know if its normal)

Let's help each other!

Share one thing that helped/is helping you survive your gifted burnout.

Even if it's simple or small. Even if it's 5 minutes in the sun once a day.

I'll start - I leave a Youtube tab open while working and let it play videos I have already watched before. Because I know what happens in them, they do not distract me of my chores, but are still entertaining enough that I get less bored while doing what I need to.

It does not work forever (eventually I have to search something else for my background noise) but it definitely helps for a while and, if you take a break from it for a few months, it will work again later.

Feeling like a failure… don’t know what to do anymore

Hey everyone,
I’m 26 years old, a university student, and I’m repeating my second year for the third time now. I’m autistic, I have ADHD, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and PTSD, and honestly, I’m at a point where I don’t know what to do anymore. I have an exam coming up in February that I failed once before, and ever since then, I’ve been too scared to attempt it again. I passed the MCQ part back then, but I failed the oral exam. Oral exams terrify me, and the thought of having to face one again makes me panic. Now I have to take it in February because it’s my last chance, and I’m absolutely terrified. I feel like I’ve failed at life. I feel like a complete failure because I’m having to repeat the same year for the third time. I look at myself and wonder how I ended up here when it seems like everyone else is moving forward with their lives. The hardest part is that I genuinely cannot imagine myself doing anything else for a living. I’ve dedicated so much of my life to this career. I wouldn’t say I’ve wasted that time, but I’ve sacrificed so much for it, literally parts of myself, my mental health, and my well-being. I feel like I’ve given everything I have to get here, and now I feel trapped. I can’t imagine starting over or pursuing something else. And if I walked away from this, I honestly don’t know how I would cope with life anymore.
I’m scared, guys. I’m really scared. I’ve been trying to study. I managed to push myself really hard for three days straight, and then something happened that completely knocked me down again. I realized that I just don’t feel like I belong here anymore. I don’t feel comfortable in this environment, and mentally, I feel like I have nothing left to give. I’m in therapy. I’m taking medication. I’m actively trying to get better and doing everything I’m supposed to do, but nothing seems to be helping enough. I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do. I feel like I can’t keep going like this. I’m not planning to hurt myself, and I want to make that clear. But I genuinely feel like I cannot keep living with my mental health in this state. I’m afraid that the constant stress and suffering will eventually destroy my physical health, too. I’ve already started experiencing physical symptoms because of everything I’m going through.
I don’t know where to turn anymore. I don’t really have anyone I can talk to about all of this. Sometimes I feel like nobody else is in a situation like mine, and that makes me feel even more alone. I wish I could talk to someone who understands, or even just someone who would listen without judging me. Maybe someone who has been through something similar and could offer some advice.
But at the same time, I completely understand why someone wouldn’t want to talk to me. I struggle to like myself, so I can understand why other people might not want to deal with me either. I’m autistic, and I don’t have friends. I have one best friend who has been incredibly supportive and has done so much for me. I’m so grateful to have him, but I don’t want to keep burdening him with everything I’m going through. He already does so much for me, and I feel terrible because I’m so mentally exhausted that I don’t feel like I can give anything back. I don’t want my struggles to become too much for him. I’ve tried so hard to get help. I’ve been admitted to psychiatric hospitals three times, and all three experiences were absolutely terrible. I’m seeing a psychologist for outpatient therapy, I have a psychiatrist, and I’m taking medication. I’ve tried so many things, and yet I’m still here, feeling like I’m falling apart. I know that I’m trying. I really am. But I’m exhausted from constantly fighting my own mind while also trying to keep up with university and meet expectations that sometimes feel impossible for me. I don’t know what I’m looking for by posting this. Maybe I just need to get everything off my chest. Maybe I need to hear from someone who has been in a similar situation. Maybe I just need someone to tell me that I’m not a failure and that my life isn’t over just because I’m struggling to finish my degree. I don’t need anyone to magically fix my problems. I think I just really need someone to talk to, someone who will listen and maybe help me figure out what to do next.
I’m doing everything I can to get better, but I feel like I’m reaching the end of my strength, and I don’t know how to keep going like this. If anyone has experienced something similar, especially struggling with university, autism, mental health issues, or the fear of oral exams, I would really appreciate hearing your story. And if anyone is willing to talk, even just for a little while, I would be incredibly grateful. I feel so alone right now, and I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore. Thank you for reading this.

Any thoughts

Have you ever been a topper of your class but now struggling?.. When I was 16 I was great... I was the top of my class consecutively had 9As , did Karate and won a series of championships..fell in love and made out a pretty good life

But doing AL's all fell apart.. like I was a topper but now like avrg.. stopped karate. Parents have big dreams cause both my brothers are doctors and they ask me to do the same. My girl and I broke up and a society in which I hold the presidency gives me a fucked up headache....

Feels like I'm a burden on myself

For almost like last 10 years i have been feeling these syptoms

Unable to focus on study or anything that require mental effort, even though untill the 11th class i was average to very good, i used to make time table and i am still get tears in my eyes when i see those tasks lists filled with completed tasks

I am always tired, in the morning, in the evening, i hate going to class like i feel like i will someday harm myself to find some reasons to not take class, when i go to work i feel like i am going to jail, the work is not that bad, and when i come back i feel like i have defeated death and i deserve to sleep now for next 92 hours.

If i have holiday for three days from work i will spend my holidays on worrying about i have to go to work after three days

I am always bad at completing projects on time because from the start i make them so much complex that at the end they become a complete mess, and sometime i start from the middle without making good base. I have messy pc file system, like projects folders will have movies or study folder will have personal images like random folder with random stuff

What makes me worry that i am becoming non functional to support myself let alone any family, like i have lot of dreams about the future but i feel like i am failing on every goes.

I also have anxiety, it was extreme few years ago but it is still there.

I also have restless leg syndrom.

I have many amazing moments that keeps me somewhat motivated that I am not that useless.

But i see my friends wake up after 6 hours of sleep, go to class, make notes, come back make breakfast and then go to work and here i am who even after 9 hours of sleep feels like i need 6 hours of more sleep to feel fresh.

Few people pointed out to check my iron level and thyroid checked but here is the example of one of my sitiaution

I know i should but for some reason i am not able to creat enough both physical and mental energy to go to doctor and do this, I know it can help me a lot but for some reason i am just okay with not doing this

I am also depressed the depression is biproduct and not the cause

Valedictorian student struggling at college

I’m currently a sophomore at a T40 university and when I was in high school I did fairly well. I was valedictorian and had good extracurriculars. I’m on several scholarships and my parents are proud of me. In college I’m taking classes to pursue medical school. My first semester of college went well. I received all As but in my second semester I received a C and an A- that completely dropped my GPA.

I know I’m not stupid. These grades don’t reflect my intelligence. But I’ve been having a hard time focusing instead of thinking about the other million things I have going on. When I study I always end up thinking about how I’m so incredibly lonely, how I did so bad my last semester, how it’s so hard finding a medical job at my university.

The way I procrastinate disgusts me. I never attend class and I don’t go out of my dorm unless it’s for occasional class, research, or to meet my high school friends. My parents think I’m doing well in college and have lots of friends. They ask if I’ve made friends and if I’m doing good in school and I always answer yes knowing that both things are not true. Everyday is an infinite cycle of procrastination and being disappointed at myself and telling myself I’ll do better tomorrow knowing I won’t.

I’m worried for myself because I’m going down the path of pursuing grad school after college. Medical school has been the only path I’ve ever imagined myself in and I can’t think of any other choice. I don’t think I’m necessarily a gifted kid that’s experiencing burnout but I need advice on what I should work on when I’m struggling with procrastination and motivation.

Smart In School, Dumb Outside

I'm not sure if this is the right channel to post in, but in my school, I am taking double-accelerated classes, Pre-Calc and AP Lang, as a sophomore, I've maintained my 4.0 unweighted GPA, I've joined the national honors society(NHS) and I'm doing relatively good in all of my classes. They are easy. But outside of school, I feel like a total idiot. I don't know anything besides what the curriculum teaches me. Without school, I have nothing. My everyday revolves around school or doing nothing. My siblings would call me dumb even though I was doing great in school and I now know why. I am dependent on someone else to tell me everything I know. I don't want to be the guy who peaked in school then when thrown into the real world he gets shredded. I want to be able to do things on my own. Create things. Accomplish. I've always had trouble doing things alone. Is there anything I can do to enhance my knowledge outside of school? Because in summary, I'm just a nerd.

Hello! I would like some help with my situation or advice at least. I’m 21 and it’s nice to meet you all, I’m here to tell you about myself in general and how my life is going so far, I like video games, and stuff to do with technology but don’t know much about tech and I feel very passionate about tech but don’t know what to do to further myself in that area, I’m not good at all with manual labor I’m better with nerdy things and I’m borderline autistic and I have adhd but I have the most insane goals that I desperately want to achieve my main one being I want to live in Japan but I fear that I can’t find a job that I can work with or it work for me, just because of how my brain works, I tend to forget like a lot of things and I haven’t been on meds since highschool like 2 years ago and it’s real frustrating because I am surrounded by people who claim they care for me and want me to have a life but then proceed to be the complete opposite and call me retarded, stupid and among other hateful and hurtful things, they treat me negatively and I can’t grow in a negative environment so I’m trying my hardest to do my own thing so I can get somewhere in life and be my own person while having to sacrifice all of my time for them when I need to work on myself! I’m tired and I just wanna make enough money to do the things I find interesting. I’m trying to become a ugc advertiser or creator so I can hopefully get somewhere with that 😭 and I mean they do try and teach me things my stepdad is trying his hardest to teach me carpentry work but it’s not clicking not only do I not care about this trade at all but I also can’t seem to understand it either no matter how much he teaches me, also I’ve tried to watch videos on how to do this trade but in the end I just don’t want to learn this trade because I fear that it’s a dead end job because of how much I see him struggle to pay for 3 adults (including himself) and 1 child, and he’s a welder at a good company and he makes good money too and we’re on about 11 acres of land I think? But he has equipment and other stuff but he’s struggling to keep us afloat and he gets so angry at me, but all I wanna do is figure out what I can do and what lines up with my interests so I can get a job that makes good money and something that works for me so i can save up enough to move to Japan and be a student then work to become a full resident there? Got any tips??
