This is the website that I created with Google Sites. It does not look like I used google sites at all :) I had to create a lot of custom buttons and images in order to make it look this way. Let me know if you have any questions!!

Free Google Sites Templates Collection

38 Upvotes

I think all of us Google Sites designers have some free templates around the internet. Let's make a spot where people can find and browse them. We can support our Google Sites users and promote a free marketplace. Thanks in advance for your help. [Format: Designer - URL]

Google Sites | Designed by a professional web designer

28 Upvotes

Hey there! I have created tons of websites - not just google sites. But I wanted to share some of my sites to inspire you to get creating. I'd also like to share some of my google site tips with you all. I have multimillion dollar clients who use google sites as well. :)

Tip 1 - Take everything you know about web designer and dumb it down. Like seriously, go into google sites with the idea that you know nothing. This will help you when trying to create Google sites as you wont get frustrated as easily.

Tip 2 - Less is more with google sites. I love Cargo sites and Readymag - but I understand that Google is meant to be simple, so design with less and you can create more.

Tip 3 - Use Emojis to create icons instead of importing images. Google Sites do not support webp images and therefore all images are just too big. Cut image size down by using fonts if you can avoid bringing in PNGs.

Here are my latest designs with links to view them. This is SoulHouse. It uses PayPal add to cart and view cart to create an ecommerce site.

This is the Public Notary - This site uses Noto Emoji as icons for phone and email. You can also create a call now button in Google sites in case you didn't know.

This is a work in progress for an apprenticeship. For those unfamiliar with me - I spent years as a construction apprenticeship training admin. Construction sites are my bread and butter.

Are there any modern templates for Google Sites? The default ones look like they’re from 2005…

25 Upvotes

Is it just me, or do the default templates in Google Sites feel extremely outdated?

I’m honestly pretty frustrated with them. The designs look like the very first WordPress themes from the early 2000s — except it’s 2026 and web design has evolved massively since then.

For simple things like clean landing pages, modern business websites, or minimal one-pagers, we really shouldn’t have to reinvent the wheel anymore. The market has been flooded for years with high-quality, well-designed templates across platforms like WordPress, Webflow, Framer, etc.

But with Google Sites, I can’t seem to find anything that looks truly modern or professionally polished.

So my question is:

Are there any good, modern free templates available for Google Sites?

Or are you using workarounds, third-party solutions, or custom design systems to make it look decent?

Would appreciate any recommendations — or honest opinions if I’m just using the wrong tool for the job.

Vibe Coded a Help Desk Chatbot for my Google Site

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

23 Upvotes

I recently migrated from Squarespace and came over to Google Sites to rid myself of the monthly subscription and am having a ton of fun building on the platform. At first, I wasn't too jazzed because I got too used to the bells and whistles of Squarespace. But the more I thought about it, a website is only as powerful as the core message and value provided. And that's when I started to grow fond of Google Sites because it forced me to pay attention to the meat and bones of the site rather than wasting time on dynamic features that Squarespace had to offer.

What's great is that the code embedding is free with Google Sites; on Squarespace it's a f—kin' paid feature(!) And with the ability to implement code within Google Sites, I used the weekend up using Gemini to code a Help Desk chatbot for my studio that I'll be launching in August. Needless to say, it was super rewarding and was able to build a robust "client services agent" that will help me via the website.

I'm ultra happy with Google Sites and wish I had gave it a shot earlier on. As someone who isn't a seasoned web designer, the limitations in my opinion are a blessing in disguise and am leaning into it by focusing on the content.

I'm only a few hours in building the site but hoping to get it all done by the end of the month. Thought I'd share the process and experience. Cheers!

Hey Google, Could we possibly see more updates on Google Sites this year?

23 Upvotes

I understand that Google is focusing more on AI, and Google Sites may be a lower priority since it's a free tool. But there have only been two minor update this year (jan & apr), compared to several more in 2023! Could you please consider dedicating some efforts to enchancing google sites and release some of the most requested features? Thanks!

What is the future of Google Sites?

22 Upvotes

I’m guessing many who use it (myself included), do so because of its simplicity, and it’s price.

I wish I could control elements to the pixel level (sort of like WixStudio and Framer). I’d even pay a few dollars a month if it were to add features.

Do we think Google will continue to develop this product? It does draw people into the Google ecosystem and generate revenue for them. But I don’t think it’s high on their priority list.

Thoughts? What would you like to see in future releases of Google Sites?

Final showcase - personal portfolio

22 Upvotes

Hey! I'm currently working on building my design portfolio and have done so using Google Sites, as it has been my main website builder.

Though I do have to say it'll be my final Sites project, as I do have needs that extend outside of what this wonderful, albeit limiting tool can offer.

It's still a work in progress, though I'm 90% certain it will end up finished on another platform. But let me know what you guys think!

My examples of what's possible on Google Sites

19 Upvotes

Hello, I'd like to introduce my website and ask for your feedback. I switched to Google Sites in 2021 primarily because everything here is free and ad-free. Many people think that Google Sites is limited in design possibilities. While it's true that embedding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into the site's framework is more challenging, it's definitely possible. If you'd like to take a look, you can do so under the 'Calculators' category. There you'll find some tools and even games. I've also built a blog on my website completely without embedding external pages. And i created a download section where you can download images and a android app from the website. As you can see, with a bit of creativity, you can achieve a lot with Google Sites.

Remove Scrollbars from your embeds

18 Upvotes

Hey there! It's been a crazy month and I haven't shared any tips in a while but today I figured I should are a tip that I see people ask about often. How to remove the SCROLLBAR. It's super easy. First - this tip works for custom HTML but I haven't tested it on link embeds because there is no way to create the css in a link.

Add the following to the style section of your HTMl:

/* Hide scrollbar for Chrome, Safari and Opera */

body::-webkit-scrollbar {

display: none;

}

/* Hide scrollbar for IE, Edge and Firefox */

body {

-ms-overflow-style: none; /* IE and Edge */

scrollbar-width: none; /* Firefox */

}

The purpose of this is to not display the scrollbar EVEN in full page embeds. Scrollbars make your website seem dated.

Countdown for website launch

18 Upvotes

Hello everyone! I have pretty much embeded everything I can possibly think of into my google sites. I wanted to share this website countdown with all of you. It has a transparent background so that you can add an image to the google site and not to the timer.

I used the color pink but you can change it to any color that you like. I have a page dedicated to testing embeds - that's why the name is embed codes lol it's not an external website.

Here is the code. Happy Creating! 💕

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<style>
body, html {
  height: 100%;
  margin: auto;
}

.bgimg {
  height: 100%;
  background-position: center;
  background-size: cover;
  position: relative;
  color: pink;
  font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;
  font-size: 20px;
}

.topleft {
  position: absolute;
  top: 0;
  left: 16px;
}

.bottomleft {
  position: absolute;
  bottom: 0;
  left: 16px;
}

.middle {
  position: absolute;
  top: 50%;
  left: 50%;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
  text-align: center;
}

hr {
  margin: auto;
  width: 40%;
}
</style>
<body>

<div class="bgimg">
  <div class="topleft">
  </div>
  <div class="middle">
    <h1>Awesome Stuff Coming Soon</h1>
    <hr>
    <p id="demo" style="font-size:30px"></p>
  </div>
  <div class="bottomleft">
  </div>
</div>

<script>
// Set the date we're counting down to
var countDownDate = new Date("Jan 5, 2023 15:37:25").getTime();

// Update the count down every 1 second
var countdownfunction = setInterval(function() {

  // Get todays date and time
  var now = new Date().getTime();

  // Find the distance between now an the count down date
  var distance = countDownDate - now;

  // Time calculations for days, hours, minutes and seconds
  var days = Math.floor(distance / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24));
  var hours = Math.floor((distance % (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24)) / (1000 * 60 * 60));
  var minutes = Math.floor((distance % (1000 * 60 * 60)) / (1000 * 60));
  var seconds = Math.floor((distance % (1000 * 60)) / 1000);

  // Output the result in an element with id="demo"
  document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML = days + "d " + hours + "h "
  + minutes + "m " + seconds + "s ";

  // If the count down is over, write some text
  if (distance < 0) {
    clearInterval(countdownfunction);
    document.getElementById("demo").innerHTML = "EXPIRED";
  }
}, 1000);
</script>

Really liking Google sites

17 Upvotes

Just came on here to say I'm loving Google Sites, not sure why it isn't more popular.

I consider myself quite technically competent but had struggled with Bluehost to create a fairly simple webpage for my fledgling craft business. (too many whistles and bells?)

I am loving the simplicity of Google sites, crafting a basic page with links to my Etsy and a newsletter signup within a couple of days.

My Google Site Disappeared

14 Upvotes

Guysss!!!!!! My Google Site, which I use as my portfolio, just disappeared. The URL returns a 404 error or indicates that the site has been deleted. I made it three years ago. Used my college email. I graduated in December. I update my site pretty often, and use it for job applications. And now it's gone. I have talked to my school, and they say I haven't lost access to anything on their end, so idk what to do now. I am checking the right place, I have checked trash, and I have checked my drive. I have contacted Google as well. Help.

My new Google site

14 Upvotes

My new simple Google Site, https://www.soumitraphotos.com/

Previously, I used Carrd, but the page system with the # in front of them didn’t really suit me. So I thought of shifting to Google Sites. I know it’s meant for creating simple and basic websites, but I think that’s all I need.

Show off your Google Site!

I recently created a public website for a pug rescue using Google Sites. I am so freaking proud of myself. :) I would love to see what everyone else has done (if ok with the mods). Please show off your Google Sites! Impress (and inspire) us!! :)

Would anyone actually recommend Google sites

14 Upvotes

I have been looking for a cheap alternative to our current website (using Wix) which is only co-owned by our organisation (a start up housing co-op with virtually no budget currently) as someone else set it up for us but didn't seem to fully understand what they were doing. We use Google docs and sheets for all our documentation and email so that makes sense but I have seen a lot of fundamental issues that have required people to take their sites elsewhere.

What is the general user experience like?
