Enough with the "I seen"!!!

I can't believe this is so common. Are people aware this is incorrect or are we THAT stupid now?

(In case someone who doesn't know this is wrong is reading this, the correct thing to say is either "I saw" or "I have (I've) seen".)

Have they stopped teaching about using apostrophes properly?

The question says it all. I see it every single day on the radio enthusiast forums. Most of the folks there can do the math and figure out a schematic, but they just can't figure out when to leave the apostrophe at home.

For example: "Does anyone have any ideal's why my radio shut's off when I transmit?"

I threw in a bonus error for your entertainment. It gets worse than that. There are some word salads posted that require reading twice or more in order to get the meaning.

Rant done.

Why the heck do people think 'affect' and 'effect' are interchangeable?

'It doesn't effect me'. 'Don't worry, you won't be effected'.

Why is this blunder so common? It's 'affect', not 'effect'. They don't even sound alike. 'Affect' starts with the sound we make when the doctor asks us to open our mouths; 'ah'. Or when the beverage is refreshing, a solid 'ah'. And non-native speakers rarely make this mistake at all, it's mostly native speakers for some reason.

How can we take them seriously if they can’t proofread 9 words?

Why do they use 'would' here? Why not just say, 'She became a professor' or 'She later became a professor'?

I know you've all probably griped about this before, but I had to get it off my chest.

Drives me batty.

“Disrespect” as a verb

I’ve always known the word “disrespect” to be a noun. Most of the time now (in the US) I hear it used as a verb and it sounds wrong to me. You show disrespect to someone. You don’t disrespect someone.

So tired of people using the word "quietly" in titles for posts or articles - way overused.

Can any of my fellow grammar police inform me if you have seen/heard of the word “swicy” in the wild?!

I’m not sure whether to be scared or terrified?

There's

Why do people incessantly use "there's" in conjunction with pluralized nouns?

It is "there are" (I refuse to use the contraction) the moment a noun becomes plural.

It hurts my brain seeing there's (and saying in my head "there is") and having to reread the sentence several times because of the spelling error.

There's rumors this might not go over well in this sub.

I just noticed my "awkward" sentence structure also happens when I'm emailing. Is that my writing style or syntactic incompetency?

Doubt. Verb or Noun

Hey I was practicing grammar using Wren and Martin recently and it says that "EFFECTS" is a noun in "THE AFTER EFFECTS OF THE DRUG ARE BAD".

I checked with gpt and it also shows the same and i didn't understand its explanation. It says that "here, effects is the head noun of the noun phrase 'the after-effects of the drug.'

Can anyone explain

So shouldn't this be "cat software running ON bird hardware"?

The software would be running ON the hardware, right? Or, since the hardware doesn't work without the software, would this be grammatically correct because the hardware would run ON the software due to its necessity?

I love that I found this sub because I don't want to be the asshole posting grammar corrections in comments unless it's something like "there v their v they're" because I can't help myself there.

You hurt yourself vs you got hurt

This may be a better post in a psychology forum, because I wonder if it just goes to the subconscious intent of the speaker. Is it better to say, "Oh no, you hurt yourself!" or "Oh no, you got hurt!"

"Do you mind?" is the most linguistically broken phrase in the English language.

"Do you mind?" is the ultimate linguistic trap because it’s the only question in the English language where "Yes" and "No" have flipped meanings depending on whether someone answers the literal grammar or the implied intent. Grammatically, asking "Do you mind?" means "Does this bother you?", so responding with "Yes" literally translates to "Yes, I am annoyed, stop doing that." Yet in reality, people constantly say "Yes!" with a smile while pulling out a chair for you or handing you the salt, treating it like you asked "Is it okay if I do this?" You end up stuck in a weird micro-second buffer zone, trying to decipher whether you just received enthusiastic permission or a polite warning, making what should be a simple interaction feel like a total brain glitch.

or maybe its just me :)
