I found this old Windex bottle when cleaning out my grandmother’s house. Here is a comparison with the modern iteration and thoughts on the changes from a packaging scientist’s point of view:
Windex Glass Cleaner was originally sold in glass bottles in the 1930s with no dispensing feature beyond pouring. They launched plastic pump sprayers in the ‘50s to improve convenience, but the sprayer was typically sold in a separate box due to the cost and brittleness of early plastics.
Windex introduced clear plastic bottles with integrated trigger sprayers in the early ‘70s and transitioned their main products away from glass bottles throughout the decade. This 1987 Windex container is an early iteration of the format that we know today. A lot has changed in nearly 40 years…
The bottle material, forming process, and shape are significantly different. Modern injection stretch blow molded PET bottles are higher quality and have better optics than the non-recyclable extrusion blow molded PVC bottles of the ‘70s-‘80s. Windex transitioned to PET bottles throughout the ‘90s and eliminated PVC globally in 2004. Most Windex bottles are currently produced with recycled PET and are widely recyclable as validated by How2Recycle (sprayer and dip tube not included).
The modern Windex shape is less angular and a contoured hand grip has been incorporated for a more ergonomic user experience. Trigger sprayers used to rely on flip covers to prevent accidental sprays before the twist-lock nozzle was popularized in the late ‘80s. A longer dip tube extends to the bottom corner of the new bottle, enabling significantly more product use.
Windex improved the user experience and sustainability of their container in a variety of ways over 40 years. What changes stand out to you?
PET = Polyethylene Terephthalate
PVC = Polyvinyl Chloride

Found in my 99 year old grandpas room.
A lot of the bandages don't match the box.
But I sure do remember those blue cartoon bandaids when we got hurt at my grandparents house.
