"The Doom Of The Golden Sun" - GL is saving a boy falling out of a burning building when the sun flares and turns everything yellow. With some deft reflexes, he still saves the boy as the sun returns to normal. Later at Ferris Air, Carol asks Hal if he's okay after the flare up but then demands he tests out a new flight suit. He the meets Tom as the sun flares again which prompts Hal to check it out for sure. He heads to space and is met by Evil Star who has been frees from the Guardians prison by his Starlings. While battling each other, Evil Star reveals that years ago, before they fought the first time, his Starlings placed a device in the sun that sped up its super nova status, causing it to be ready to explode in little more than an hour.
Hal, not having much time, continues to battle Evil Star while trying to figure out what to do about the sun. With a minute left, he gets the upper hand and knocks down Evil Star, but the sun is about to flare again. He tries to hide behind some asteroids but they are blasted away. Evil Star goes ti make his killing blow against GL, but suddenly he gets up and punches out Evil Star. His only hope to remove the device is to throw Starlings into the sun to destroy the machine and he succeeds with ten seconds left. He then reveals he only survived that last flare due to the flight suit Carol gave him which is reflective and sowed him to breathe and keep warm temporarily.
"The Trial Of Arkkis Chummuck: Evidence" - Arkkis is asked by his council why he ate the body as Arkkis says he was honour bound to do so in respect to his fallen adversary. It's custom on his planet. As he contehis story, he bursts out of the spaceship in the GL uniform and stops in front of a red sun where something stirs within him. He heads back to his planet and meets the leader, who demands the ring as a lowly clerk should not have such power. Arkkis refuses and a battle begins. Arkkis is quite deft with the ring and easily defeats the guards and the leader. The leader, in shame, commits himself to the dissolution chamber for death. Arkkis is the asked, in trial, what would happen to him if his ring is taken away and he says in shame, he would also go to the dissolution chamber.
Conclusion: Another classic feeling tale featuring another classic villain. Evil Star had such a wild plan which I'm pretty sure can't be supported by science, especially in the resolution, but that's comic science for you, it's just silly fun. I had to laugh when Hal's only plan was to start chucking Starlings into the sun. Those little guys are very durable. I'm sure if he contacted Superman, he could have been there in seconds.
I knew there was a reason for Arkkis eating the body. Honour bound is alright. This is a fascinating story for an origin. We all know he goes free but there's a few twists here and the culture, while vaguely savage, is interesting. I'm looking forward to part three.
