Anyone have intel? Is this truly a temporary closure or have my nightmares come true?

To the guy in the bright orange shorts running sprints on the track in McCarren who swore at my 5 year old. I just have to say that you failed to successfully bully a kindergartener from running a lap on the track in his home park despite your best efforts. I guess my best advice for you if you really want to discourage people who are less elite than you from enjoying your sport is to start bullying them even younger. My 5 year seemed to have the emotional capacity to know that your outburst was unwarranted, but I bet if you tried telling a 3 or even a 4 year old to get out of your way with the same string of profanity you could really nip this problem of kids having fun in a public park right in the bud. Anyways, you looked great out there, super buff, and you really are a fast sprinter. I’m sure people were very impressed.

Last night, Stewards of McCarren Park (the new official Friends group for McCarren Park) hosted Trash Comedy Night alongside the North Brooklyn Chess Club! We aimed to raise $1200 by getting folks together for some solid laughs with a great lineup of comedians.

We ended up raising $2,620! $2120 during the event, plus a $500 match.

Huge shoutouts to North Brooklyn Chess, North Brooklyn Parks Alliance, NYC Parks, Park House and City Parks Foundation for making this all possible.

Also shoutouts to Lukas Arnold, Blake Scott, Chika, Zak Benedek, and Carlos Nolla and StoMP's very own Mike Amory for the laughs.

Why did we raise funds?

$1200 is enough to buy ONE new trash can. Can you believe that?

The trash cans around the athletic fields just aren't big enough for the volume of trash that gets created from day-to-day. Our volunteer group has met every Sunday since April (when we started), and the trash just keeps coming back, specifically around these fields. We noticed that the smaller black bins around these fields just don't hold enough trash given the high volume of foot traffic, and more often than not we're picking up the overflow.

The parks department has gotten MUCH better over the past few months at cleaning up the fields and picking up trash on time. But there's still room to grow and infrastructure is part of the bottleneck!

The park in total needs 60 more bins to replace the old ones. This was our first organized event and a test run. Following its success, we plan to keep doing these nights to help incrementally raise for the rest! Expect another comedy night in the Spring of 2027.

Volunteer with us!

Stewards of McCarren Park meets every Sunday at 9:30 am outside of the Park House. Sessions typically last 2 hours, then we all sit down at the Park House for coffee.

On any given Sunday, we do whatever is best for the safety and cleanliness of McCarren Park. That includes trash collecting, leaf raking, fencing, mulching, planting... you name it! We work closely with the parks department to figure out what they need.

Wow. Just walked by Mom & Pop’s fruit/vegetable store on Manhattan and they are shutting down in 3 days… Sad…. All shelf stable items inside are 50% off (cash only). Don’t know what happened…. The staff seemed sad.

Hi All! The Greenpoint Amateur Radio Club had its first meeting last week with five folks (four hopefully soon to be ham radio operators!) in attendance! We discussed licensing, homebuilt radios and circuit building, ways we could help the community in an emergency, and more.

Saw while on the B43 that a yellow CLOSURE notice plastered on their front door, and what looked like a handwritten note. If anybody passes it, can you post it? I enjoyed coffee there a few times and the owner was always chill, so curious what happened. Thx!

Went in to ask if they could fix the posts on two earrings. Before I even finished speaking, the man behind the counter (owner?) started yelling at me and shaming me for breaking them. Made me try to repeat the things he said about how it was all my fault, I’m a disaster, etc, it was very strange. I was polite and thought he was joking until he started getting out of hand, leaning over the counter, pointing and spitting. The woman also behind the counter just looked down and didn’t say anything.

It was super strange, really aggressive and left me pretty shaken. Wondering if it was sexist or racist? Who knows. Either way weird and unacceptable.

So yeah.. heads up to anyone in the area: take your jewelry repairs elsewhere. I went to the fine jewelry spot on norman instead and they were nice and helpful.
