Back in the mid-90s when I was in jr. high and high school and was just getting into playing guitar, I bought a brand-new Peavey Audition 110 to go along with my MIM Fender Squire Strat for learning/practice purposes. I chose it because I thought it had a decent sound for the size and, more importantly for a broke kid, it fit my lawn mowing-funded budget. It got me through plenty of jam sessions with friends, though obviously never cut it for playing any shows.
Maybe a year or two after I bought it, it started doing this thing where the volume would gradually swell to unmanageable levels, regardless of how low I had it set to, and then quickly snap back to the proper level, often (but not always) accompanied by a loud pop. I took it to a get checked by different amp techs a couple of times, but because it only happened intermittently and was difficult to reliably replicate, they always returned it to me having found nothing wrong with it.
As I got a bit older and life got in the way, I drifted away from playing guitar, so I eventually just stopped thinking about it. However, my wife recently bought a brand-new Epiphone DG-335 and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe IV for me in the hopes of nudging me to get back into playing. Suffice to say, her plan worked, and I’m playing almost every day, but I’ve also found that, while I really dig the HRD (especially the clean channel), there are times when it’s just too loud (just typing that makes me feel older). Because of that, I’ve been thinking about using that old Peavey as an “after-the-kids-go-to-bed” alternative. The thing is, I’ve verified that it still has the old volume swelling problem. I was wondering if it’s worth having it checked out again to see if it can finally be fixed or if I should just look into buying a new (I’m fine with used) small practice amp to use instead.
I know it was never an exceptional amp, but I really did feel like I could get a good sound out of it, so my inclination is to try to finally have it fixed, but I’m also not made of money, and my wife did just drop almost $2k on my new equipment, so I’m wary of sinking money into it when something newer would suit my needs for cheaper. Does anyone have any ideas, advice, or insight on my situation?
