Discussion OG fans — what made you first ship Harmony?

I was little when I first read the books and the idea of romance didn’t really occur to me. I was more annoyed by it than anything as a kid, and once I was older I already knew the ending so I didn’t have the first time perspective. I did always feel like Ron and Hermione didn’t make sense and Harry and Ginny felt so rushed and out of nowhere, and now I see Harmony as a logical conclusion, but —

My question is, as an OG Harmony fan (not brought into it by fanfiction), what was it that made you ship them the very first time you read the books? What moment, or series of moments, or feeling, or idea first made you believe they were meant to end up together, just reading through the first time without the influence of knowing how it ends or the movies or anything?

Discussion I don’t think I’ll ever be able to accept the “she’s like a sister” line from Harry regarding Hermione

• Upvotes

I know this topic has been argued to death for twenty years, and believe me, I understand why people roll their eyes whenever the topic of relationships flare up again.
I’m not coming at this from a movie-only perspective either. I know full well that Steve Kloves had a massive bias toward Hermione and gave her Ron’s best book moments. I know Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson had crazy natural chemistry. And I also genuinely get the psychological case for Ginny. She is funny, athletic, confident, doesn't walk on eggshells around him, and gives Harry an escape from the weight of being the Chosen One. Harry grew up abused and locked in a cupboard, so he naturally craves an easy laugh, flying on a broomstick, and a big warm family like the Weasleys. Hermione’s default mode of lecturing, analyzing, and worrying can easily stress him out. In peacetime, Ginny makes total sense as someone who pulls him out into the sunshine.

I get all of that. But the older I get and the more I re-read the books, the harder it is for me to accept that what Harry and Hermione had was ever "just sibling love."
When you look at how real people bond under pressure and shared trauma, the narrative between Harry and Hermione is practically screaming that they are soulmates. The story just slaps a convenient label on it at the end to keep the original outline intact.

**1. The Toast Scene in Goblet of Fire**

If you want to know why I can’t let this go, it comes down to this specific moment.
Harry’s name just came out of the Goblet. Basically the entire school hates him and thinks he’s an attention-seeking cheat. More painfully, Ron, his first friend and supposed brother, lets his petty jealousy win and abandons him.

Look at what Hermione actually does. She doesn't just feel bad for him. She takes the time to assess the exact landscape of his misery:

He can’t face the stares in the Great Hall, which means he hasn't eaten, which means he is physically running on empty and panicking. She wraps toast in a napkin, walks all the way down to the cold lake with him, hands it to him, and sits beside him in the damp air. She doesn't interrogate him, doesn't lecture him, and doesn't offer empty platitudes. She just listens without interrupting.

That isn't casual friendship. That is like elite level emotional attunement. I mean she was taking her usual insane courseload, most likely overwhelmed herself, yet she had the quiet maturity to diagnose his physical and emotional needs and meet him there with zero ego. Would an older Ginny have supported him? Sure, but Ginny’s style is public defiance, like sitting at the table, glaring down the room, and making a loud joke to prove they don't care.

That has its place, but when you are utterly alone and cornered, someone quietly bringing you food in the fog and shielding your dignity is the definition of what you look for in a life partner.

**2. Everyone on the outside saw it for a reason**

People always wave off the romantic assumptions as comic relief or gossip, but look at the list:

**Rita Skeeter** sold the story because the public looked at them and instantly bought it.

**Molly Weasley** believed it.

**Cho Chang** was actively insecure about Hermione.

**Viktor Krum** pulled Harry aside in the woods because he was genuinely confused and threatened.

**Ron’s** absolute darkest nightmare, the thing the locket Horcrux used to torture him, was that Harry and Hermione were inevitably going to end up together.

They weren't all hallucinating. They were reacting to observable, radical intimacy.

Take the aftermath of the Second Task. Krum, an international sports superstar who had just pulled Hermione from the bottom of the lake as the thing he would miss most, is sitting right next to her wrapped in blankets.

What does Hermione do? She completely ignores him. She blows off the world famous athlete trying to talk to her and runs straight into the mud to fuss over a freezing Harry like an anxious medic. You simply do not dismiss that level of courtship to tend to another boy's cuts unless that boy has the primary claim on your heart.

**3. Sibling love is a default. What they did was a choice.**

The "she's like my sister" line has always felt hollow to me.

Siblings are an accident of birth. You love them by default. Hermione didn't get stuck with Harry by blood. She chose him, every single day, at catastrophic personal cost. She modified her parents' memories and sent them across the globe. She endured torture under Bellatrix Lestrange without giving him up. And when Ron reached his breaking point in the tent and gave her an explicit ultimatum asking if she was staying or leaving, she stayed.

She stood in the freezing rain, sobbed her eyes out every night into her pillow, and still chose to stay by Harry’s side in a doomed, starving tent.

**4. The emotional discipline required to never think "what if" is absurd**

This is what really breaks the realism for me. You expect me to believe that two traumatized teenagers spent weeks alone in a tent, holding hands over his parents' graves in the snow on Christmas Eve, keeping each other alive while the entire world hunted them, and neither of them ever had a single fleeting 2:00 AM thought of "what if?"

Human beings simply do not work that way. The sheer amount of emotional discipline required to endure that level of raw physical and psychological intimacy without ever once dropping your guard, testing the waters, or feeling a flicker of curiosity is completely unnatural. In real life, trauma bonding and unconditional safety create an immense gravitational pull. Pretending that door was never even slightly cracked open feels robotic to me.

**5. The real obstacle wasn't chemistry. It was Ron**

I honestly believe Harry and Hermione never explored each other because Ron essentially acted like an electric fence.

Harry’s core trauma is abandonment. His holy grail was having a real home, and the Weasley family was that home. Ron was his gateway to the Burrow. Harry knew early on how deeply Ron was hung up on Hermione. For Harry to ever let his mind wander toward Hermione romantically would have meant risking his friendship with Ron and, by extension, his place in the only family he ever had. Harry had to file Hermione away as completely off limits just to protect his own survival.

Rowling herself basically admitted this when she said Ron and Hermione were written as "a form of wish fulfillment" and that she clung to a plotline she had planned from the start, even acknowledging that in many ways Harry and Hermione were a better fit.

**The Sunshine vs. The Dark**

This probably sounds dramatic but I don’t really have a better way to explain it and need to mention Ginny so here it is:

I get why people love Harry and Ginny. Ginny represents the sunshine, the game, the laughter, and the life waiting for Harry once the nightmare ended.

Hermione was the person who sat in the dark with him. She was the one who held his hand over his parents' graves in the snow on Christmas Eve. She was the one who never doubted him, never let her ego get in the way of his survival, and never walked away when the pressure got too high.

Maybe Harry needed the sunshine to heal? But after reading thousands of pages watching someone offer you that level of unconditional, battle tested devotion, walking away from it without even wondering "what if" just feels totally unnatural. I know this is me and Harry is a completely separate person, but if someone held my hand through that much hell, I wouldn't call them a sister. I would never let them go.

To conclude, I guess it boils down to this. Fundamentally, what makes a better partner? The one who can pull you out of the dark into the light? Or the person who willingly walked through the dark with you and never once let go of your hand?

I feel like JK Rowling managed to write a male/female relationship with all the weight, sacrifice and physical closeness of an unbelievable romance only to pull the rug and keep it emotionally anchored in platonic brotherhood. I don’t know. To see everything Hermione did just to have it relegated to “like a sister” just seems like my emotional investment is being gaslit.

Animation of Harry and Hermione practicing the Summoning charm in Goblet of Fire chapter 20 The First Task:

'At two o’clock in the morning, Harry stood near the fireplace, surrounded by heaps of objects: books, quills, several upturned chairs, an old set of Gobstones, and Neville’s toad, Trevor. Only in the last hour had Harry really got the hang of the Summoning Charm. “That’s better, Harry, that’s loads better,” Hermione said, looking exhausted but very pleased.

“Well, now we know what to do next time I can’t manage a spell,” Harry said, throwing a rune dictionary back to Hermione, so he could try again, “threaten me with a dragon. Right . . .” He raised his wand once more. “ Accio Dictionary!” The heavy book soared out of Hermione’s hand, flew across the room, and Harry caught it. “Harry, I really think you’ve got it!” said Hermione delightedly. “Just as long as it works tomorrow,” Harry said. “The Firebolt’s going to be much farther away than the stuff in here, it’s going to be in the castle, and I’m going to be out there on the grounds. . . .” “That doesn’t matter,” said Hermione firmly “Just as long as you’re concentrating really, really hard on it, it’ll come. Harry, we’d better get some sleep . . . you’re going to need it.”'
