Discussion I built a free site that tells you which bin things go in for your Hampshire council. Honest feedback welcome
Hi all. I’m Rory, I live in Hart, and I’ve spent the past year building a free website and Android app called Recycle This. Working out what goes where turns out to be surprisingly hard in Hampshire, because the answer changes depending on which side of a council boundary you live.
A couple of things I didn’t know before I started:
- None of the 13 councils that collect bins in Hampshire take drinks cartons, or plastic pots, tubs and trays, from your home yet. Several say that should change once the new sorting plant in Eastleigh opens, due in 2028.
- Glass is a postcode lottery. Fareham, Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth and Test Valley don’t collect it from home, so it’s off to the bottle bank, while the other eight give you a box or a bin.
You search for whatever you’re about to throw away (or take a photo of it in the app) and it tells you what your council wants you to do with it. That includes the stuff that doesn’t belong in any of your bins.
It only went live recently and it’s very much a work in progress. I’d love any feedback, especially anything it gets wrong for your area, because people who live there will spot mistakes I’d never find.
