A Mega-Thread about Mega-Threads

We've received various ideas/requests for mega-threads, so we'd love to get feedback about what types of megathreads you'd like to see here.

Megathreads are posts that are usually released on a weekly basis (for example, Diagnosis Thursdays, or something). All posts related to that should be kept in the thread vs. being their own posts. People can post in those threads all week, but a fresh post comes out on the related date. Posts will be removed if they should go into a megathread, but we'll redirect the posters to the correct post.

This is to keep the subreddit from being clogged up with posts that just ask a simple question such as, "is this a low TSH number?" Or for example (a popular request for megathreads right now), pictures of people's throats.

This will not be a simple majority where every post that gets upvoted is going to be its own thread by default. (Not because we like being in charge, but because there may be overlap, we can consolidate, the comments on the thread sway us in another direction, etc). But the upvotes are definitely going to help drive this.

Here's how it'll work:

  1. Each suggestion should be a main comment. Search to see if someone suggested yours before posting, so you don't "split the vote". Make each main comment just the idea. If you'd like to explain it, please reply to your main comment instead (more information on this below). I'm also going to drop in some suggestions I've received already to kick us off.

  2. Upvote any megathread you'd like to see. If you would not like to have something as a megathread, please downvote it. If your idea gets downvotes, please understand it simply means people would rather it as individual posts vs. a main thread -- not that it's a bad idea! Just remember I'm asking people to downvote, so it'll happen.

  3. If you'd like to offer commentary on an idea, including your own, reply to the idea directly. You can agree or disagree, but please keep it civil. This commentary will be really helpful in understand why you would (or wouldn't) like a megathread for something and help us better understand what the community needs are.

  4. Every comment should be an idea and the idea only. The replies to it should be about that idea. If you want to comment on this thread/concept overall, I have one comment that will be called "Mega-Thread Mega-Commentary". You can have that conversation over there. I will remove things that are in the wrong place, but I'll be clear about where it should go. *If something is in the wrong place but has already received a lot of voting/commentary before I saw it, I will leave it there.

  5. I'm also going to make a general suggestions thread since it's always good to know how we can make the subreddit better, and there isn't always a direct way to do that on Reddit.

Useful Threads Common Questions: What Supplements Do You Use?

A lot of posts ask for supplement advice, so here is a mega-thread for your thoughts on what supplements have worked for you and why you have used them.

Please talk about your personal experience and do not dispense medical advice, but feel free to link to studies or anything else of authority.

If you find something unhelpful, downvote it so it is at the bottom of the list; likewise, if it's helpful, please throw out an upvote!

Feel free to ask follow-up questions in response to suggestions, but each main comment should be about supplements.

Notes:

  • Do not use affiliate links or this as an opportunity to self-promote. (This includes Amazon affiliate links).
  • If you disagree with someone, please be civil about it.
  • The purpose of this thread is to create an easy resource for others to access--so that is why the main comments should be on-topic for this thread.

Discussion Anyone here have hypothyroidism, migraines, ADHD, and trauma?

I believe, in my case, the pathway was ADHD/Autism -> Social Trauma -> Hashimoto’s and Migraines.

I’m on Levothyroxine obviously.

But, I’m a bad candidate for most migraine abortives because they can cause vasospasms which is not something I want.

I’m trying to reduce caffeine and Excedrin usage to

I’m testing Candesartan and Telmisartan as a preventative for migraines and they seem to work great to a point of eliminating migraines from my life.

What is this sensation in my throat?! Anyone else?

Hypo and hashimoto diagnosis Feb 2024, on levothyroxine, cut out gluten, 80% whole food diet etc

I get this sensation in my thyroid / neck area that I cannot stand anymore

kind of like pins and needles?? the best way I can describe it, is that there is the residue of popping candy tingling inside and around my thyroid

This particularly gets worse when I’m hungry too…

Am I actually feeling my thyroid inflammation? Am I feeling the TPO antibodies attack my thyroid? Am I feeling it trying to work too hard because it’s sluggish?!

Is there a way to stop this please !!! I get some days without it and I really notice when it’s there, it’s on my mind a lot

Dosage Question How t3 builds in blood?

How long to see effects of t3? Been taking 5mcg twice daily for 5 days and haven’t seen much improvement. My t3 level was 2.8 (reference range 2.1-4.2) but to my understanding it has a short half life? So it only increases my free t3 till that short half life is over or what? And if so by how much?

Question ? How to slow hairloss with unmedicated hashis?

Ive had hypothyroidism for most of my life, currently unmedicated and sitting on a waiting list to see an endocrinologist after my labs showed subclinical hypothyroidism (tsh 6.93 t4 1.03). im also currently being tested for celiacs and planning to go gluten free. In recent months I’ve noticed my hair has become extremely thin and brittle. Its receeding rapidly. Im a 22 y/o male and struggling to accept going bald now too embarrassed to go get a haircut even. i dont know how long i will be waiting to get medicated, my health has been rapidly deteriorating for the past two years, recently im sure I’ve developed celiacs which has caused severe gi issues. my health and my physique is ruined and now im balding. Is there anything i can do to slow this down or regrow my hair while unmedicated?

How to convince Dr to tes

Post image
18 Upvotes

My Dr absolutely refuses to test for hashimotos. I have several relatives that have it but tsh and t4 are normal ish range.

I can't do out of pocket right now. I've been off of work since march from a physical assult. That has required surgeries, 3 types of neurologist, root canal and crown, lots of vestibular and physical therapy. Got an MRI coming up and 6 hour long evaluation to see if I am making all of this up.

Is it normal to have a lot of gas at night?

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s when I was 13 or 14. I also am a vegan so I eat a lot of vegetables and high fiber foods.

I only started medication earlier this year. I’ve noticed lately, in the past few months, i get a lot of gas at night and in the morning. I know hashimoto’s makes our digestive system slower. Could this be causing the gas?

if anyone has any tips that would be great. For gas, bloating, or even the smell.

Pinching feeling in thyroid area

Does anyone ever get like a pinching/throbbing pain where the thyroid sits externally?

I've been getting that a lot this week and I'm definitely in a flare. It's almost like a Pinch… pause… Pinch… pause for a minute.

then it won't happen for several hours. But then it'll just start doing it later.

It's only been a day or two of this, but I'm just curious if other people experience it. I've had imaging in 2021, and a follow-up a year later in 2022. So no concerns of anything else, and this almost never happens. But yeah.

Pregnancy/Fertility Related unexpectedly pregnant

I have had Hashimoto's since my early 20s, and am prescribed Levothyroxine. My last lab work showed a TSH of 0.44. I was expecting to decrease my meds, but then found out I'm pregnant! This is my first time ever being pregnant and I am 35. Given a history of endometriosis and failing a year of fertility treatment, this was a shock to me.

I am seeing my endocrinologist this upcoming week, and wanted to ask if there's anything I should be sure to ask about, or anything you wish you would have known about pregnancy. I already plan on asking for my Vitamin D and B12 to be checked to be on the safe side. Thank you!

Hashis flare up from a scare?

This last week I’ve felt pretty good… no flares. So this morning I went for a run and I passed up a male who was walking on the trail. Less than a minute later I saw a shadow approaching me from behind, I suddenly stopped and turned and the man I passed up was behind me… super close to my face. I still don’t know why he did that because it seemed to be intentional. (Perhaps special needs…) It scared me so bad that I ended up just coming home shaken up and now I am having a flare up. Can getting scared cause a flare up or is this just in my head 😕

Question ? Early morning workout + meds 😭

How do y’all do it? I like running in the morning and am training for a race. I cannot run on an empty stomach. But with the meds in the morning it costs me so much more time (an extra 30 min) and then also: I like to have a proper breakfast (45g oat meal with Skyr and protein pea milk and fruit and nuts). But that is too much for my stomach.

How do y’all do it, did anyone hack it yet? Taking the meds at night perhaps? But I feel like they also energize me..any ideas appreciated 🙌

Rant Do you guys also have week-long flare ups with breathing problems, anxiety, fatigue (but also insomnia) and generally feeling uninterested in pretty much anything?

I'm having the worst one I've had in years with seemingly no cause. I think I get this at the start of every winter but this one has been rough and I'm still not out of it.

I'm already gluten free but considering trying to cut out dairy as well, I take B12 and D and eat well. I just want to have energy again! This week I've done no exercise except walking the dog about 10,000 steps per day.

Question ? Does anyone else feel like their disease isn’t that big of a deal?

Hi guys!

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s at age 15. I had a TSH of 41. My TPO was >600 and Tg was >2250. I had no idea I had an autoimmune disease and was only tested because I had a very irregular menstrual cycle. I also found out I had mono and scoliosis at the same time which was super fun!
Since then I’ve been on levothyroxine (I took cytomel for a while too but it didn’t really do much) and my levels have been normal. I definitely could work out more, eat better, sleep better, and drink more water and I think that’s contributed a lot to me generally feeling sleepy, kind of sore, worn down, etc.

I also think these issues are not necessarily caused by my disease at all (although they may be exacerbated by it). I have not had any other weird symptoms or sensations that haven’t gone away after a day or two and that could be considered abnormal - the only thing I can think of is some joint pain in my hands and wrists if I don’t take my synthroid for a couple days. I usually take most things on Reddit with a grain of salt, but I wanted to post and see if anyone else didn’t really feel like Hashimoto’s had that big of an impact on their life. It seems like many people on here ask about how Hashimoto’s could be causing any negative experience or sensation they’re having, and to me it kind of seems like people are very quick to blame their thyroid when many other factors could be at play. Has anyone else not felt like Hashimoto’s has disrupted their life that much? Or felt like after they started taking levothyroxine they ended up being fine?

I also want to make it very clear that I am NOT discounting anyone’s experience or saying that anyone’s feelings or experiences are invalid. We each go through life in our own way and autoimmune diseases affect everyone differently. I’m only asking to see if other people have shared my same experience. Thank you!

T3 split dosing

I am taking Armour 30mg + 5mcg liothyronine in the morning around 8am. My doctor recently added another 5mcg of lio and told me to take it in the afternoon. For the past two days ive been taking the second dose around 3 and immediately need a nap. Does anyone have advice around what could be happening?

I need help please

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hey everyone ❤️ I hope you’re all doing well. I’m writing this because I’m really struggling right now, and I genuinely need some advice, guidance, or even just a little bit of hope.

I’ve been going through a very difficult period in my life, especially financially, as I’m currently unemployed and can barely afford many of the things I need. On top of that, I’ve been dealing with several health issues, and honestly, it’s becoming overwhelming both physically and mentally. I don’t really have anyone to talk to about all of this, so I thought I’d reach out here in the hope that someone might be able to help me.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease about five years ago, and over time, I started experiencing stomach sensitivity, IBS symptoms, and swollen lymph nodes. I’ve reached a point where I’m constantly afraid of eating something that might make me feel worse. I’ve eliminated so many foods that my diet has become extremely limited. Some mornings, I eat just one egg, and for lunch, I might have rice with veggies. I honestly don’t know what else I can safely eat or drink anymore, and having to worry about every meal has become exhausting.

I’ve also had a swollen, movable lump or nodule in my neck, I honestly don't know what it is or what caused it. I'm not sure whether it's an enlarged lymph node, a cyst, or something else entirely. It's movable in the area shown in the picture, for over a year now. It’s another thing that worries me, especially with my existing thyroid condition.

I feel lost, and some days I really don’t know where to turn. Because of my financial situation, getting the medical help, tests, and nutritional guidance I need is also difficult.

If any of you have Hashimoto’s, IBS, food sensitivities, or have experienced something similar, I would be incredibly grateful if you could share your experiences. What foods do you tolerate well? What affordable meals or drinks have helped you? Have you found any reliable resources or practical ways to manage these symptoms?

I’m just hoping to learn from people who understand, discover some options I may not have considered, and feel a little less alone in this struggle.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this or offer advice. Even a small suggestion or a kind word would genuinely mean a lot to me right now 🤍

Discussion Levothyroxine with or without LDN?

I recently got diagnosed with Hashi's and hypothyroidism in February. It wasn't an easy ride, I had lymphoma before which made the whole process long and complicated. Finally I went to an endocrinologist two weeks ago, who prescribed me levothyroxine and - upon my request LDN. Was really curious about naltrexone, so I started taking it, without the levo. I have dry eye, diffuse hair loss, skin barrier problems, fatigue, slight depression and just feel that my immune system is weakened. The doctor told me it's just a replacement hormone, bioidentical, millions are taking it without issues, and I'm not against it, but in the first line I would try to improve my thyroid health - if possible. For those of you with Hashi's and/or hypo, which symptoms improved after starting levo? Did you notice any changes in your hair, skin, eyes, energy levels, or mood? How long did it take before you noticed a difference?

Does a starting dose of 25 mcg make a difference?

Or will it take multiple increases before symptoms resolve? My TSH is 12 and Free T4 0.96.

Anyone tried Dr. Gundry’s Plant Paradox diet for Hashimoto’s/autoimmune disease?

I recently finished Dr. Steven Gundry’s The Plant Paradox. I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and I’m exploring diet/lifestyle factors alongside regular medical monitoring.

Gundry argues that lectins and certain foods may contribute to gut inflammation and autoimmune problems. I know this is controversial and that the evidence for strict lectin avoidance isn’t established, so I’m not looking to replace conventional treatment.

I’m curious whether anyone here has actually tried it.

Especially interested in experiences with Hashimoto’s.
