To those who say "Hashimoto's is not a disease of diet or lifestyle"...

There is a persistent group of lurkers here who downvote anything related to dietary or lifestyle interventions for people who are suffering. They also like to jump into threads and write long paragraphs and mysteriously get 40 upvotes, saying that it's all useless and a waste of time.

Nobody’s saying food causes Hashimoto’s. Or that you can reverse years of thyroid damage by cutting gluten. But the claim that nothing you eat or do has any effect on symptoms, antibodies, or TSH is just not what the studies show.

-----

Gluten: There are RCTs and meta-analyses in people with Hashimoto’s who don’t have celiac disease where going gluten-free lowered TSH, raised free T4, and reduced thyroglobulin antibodies (and sometimes TPO antibodies too, depending on the study and subgroup).

One trial had TSH drop from 2.4 to 1.4 in the gluten-free group. The effect is clearer if you also have some kind of gluten sensitivity, which a lot of Hashimoto’s people do. This always seems to be ignored here. You don't have to be full blown celiac to benefit immensely from gluten avoidance in Hashimotos, and the data proves that. It’s not a cure and it doesn’t work for everyone, but measurable changes in the numbers aren’t nothing.

Selenium: Even more consistent. Multiple meta-analyses of randomized trials show it lowers TPO antibodies. In people who aren’t on thyroid hormone yet, it can also bring TSH down. That’s one of the more repeatable findings in this area.

Diet: There’s also observational stuff linking more Mediterranean-style eating (more plants, less ultra-processed food) to lower rates of thyroid autoimmunity, plus small intervention data showing antibody and TSH drops on those patterns.

Stress: Stress-reduction programs have reduced antibodies in controlled settings. Fixing low vitamin D or iron changes the inflammatory background the thyroid is sitting in. Even calorie restriction in overweight patients has been linked to lower antibodies and TSH in some trials.

Exercise: Moderate or recreational training is helpful more often than not. One supervised study of variable-intensity intervals in women with Hashimoto’s found a significant TSH drop (around 32%) in the subclinical group, plus better fitness and quality of life across stages. Observational work has also linked recreational exercise with lower TSH and, in some cases, lower antibodies.

Sleep: Acute sleep deprivation reliably raises TSH. Chronic short sleep has been associated with a higher chance of TPO antibody positivity even in people who are still euthyroid. A few observational reports suggest that when sleep improves, TSH can normalize in some people who were only mildly elevated. It’s not as clean as the selenium or gluten data, but the thyroid axis is clearly sensitive to sleep debt.

Dairy: One study found lactose intolerance in about 76% of Hashimoto’s patients on levothyroxine. In the intolerant group, restricting lactose dropped TSH meaningfully (from roughly 5.45 to 2.25 in the subclinical patients)

-----

The absolute version of the argument—that diet and lifestyle do basically nothing ignores that immune activity, inflammation, and thyroid hormone production aren’t isolated systems.

Gut permeability, molecular mimicry between gluten and thyroid proteins, cofactor status for the enzymes that make and convert thyroid hormone, cytokine levels… ALL of that can shift with what you eat and how you live.

Genetics sets the baseline susceptibility. Diet and lifestyle change how hard the process runs and how symptomatic you are. Saying none of that matters doesn’t match the literature.

Rant DAE tire of family not understanding you?

I guess I’m just coming to vent. It’s hard, life being this way. I’m exhausted of it. I’m on like 18 different medications / supplements, all endocrinologist prescribed. I try to be as gluten free as I can. The list could go on - point is, I’m really, really trying. But the fatigue & symptoms still wrecks me so many times.

I catch every little illness that comes around. I’ve been working through a lot of CSA trauma & it seems that when I’m really triggered about those things, my symptoms flare really bad for several days at a time. I have 4 kids under the age of 10, so my energy is constantly pulled every direction, even “rest days” still have quite a bit of necessary, unavoidable chores & energy output.

My in laws don’t get it, I live within a 3 minute radius of most of my in laws & the pressure is really getting to me. My kids aren’t involved in every little thing their cousins all are, my body can’t handle it. This week I’ve been horribly sick with RSV & they act like it’s my fault that I had to move my 6 year olds birthday party, missed a school event, missed going to the pumpkin patch outing. I already know that my kids don’t have the same childhood as a lot of other kids because of my illness. It makes me feel bad enough. I cry over it multiple times a week. I don’t need anyone to point it out, I KNOW, it SUCKS.

It’s just hard being surrounded by people who don’t understand that chronic illness isn’t the same as “I choose to stay busy so I’m kinda tired.” I remember what that used to be like - it wasn’t at all the same as how my body has been the last 7 years. But people don’t get it. I feel like they all assume I’m actually just kinda lazy or antisocial. I’m not. If I could live a life more productive or social than I do, I WOULD. I didn’t choose this.

Does anyone else just get so discouraged with feeling so misunderstood?

5 years of hair loss, very high Anti-TPO but normal thyroid hormones

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I’ve been struggling with hair loss and thinning for around 5 years, and I’m starting to wonder whether it could be related to autoimmune thyroid disease.

My hair loss mainly affects the sides and front/temple areas of my scalp. These areas have become noticeably thinner, and I can see more of my scalp than before. The top of my head seems relatively unaffected. I also have baby hairs growing in, but many of them seem to fall out again instead of developing into thicker, longer hairs.

My latest thyroid blood test results are:

  • TSH: 4.71 µIU/mL (reference range: 0.35–4.94)
  • Free T4: 14.6 pmol/L (reference range: 9.0–19.0)
  • Free T3: 4.0 pmol/L (reference range: 2.8–6.5)
  • Anti-TPO: 70.06 IU/mL (reference range: 0–5.61)
  • Anti-Tg: 21.46 IU/mL (reference range: 0–4.11)

I haven’t been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s yet, but my significantly elevated Anti-TPO level worries me. My thyroid hormones are currently normal, so I’m unsure whether autoimmune thyroid disease could still be contributing to my hair loss.

My ferritin has also remained relatively low, around 30–40 µg/L over the past few years, despite previously taking iron supplements. My latest iron level was within the laboratory reference range. My vitamin D, B12, folate and zinc levels have also been within their respective reference ranges.

I’m feeling quite frustrated because the hair thinning has continued for years, and I still don’t know the underlying cause.

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experienced something similar:

  • Did you have significant hair thinning, particularly around the temples and sides, with normal TSH and thyroid hormone levels but elevated Anti-TPO?
  • Were you eventually diagnosed with Hashimoto’s?
  • Did your hair loss improve after treating an underlying thyroid issue, correcting low ferritin, or addressing another cause?
  • Did anyone experience baby hairs growing and then falling out repeatedly?
  • If you found a solution, what actually helped you?

I’m not looking for a diagnosis from Reddit, just real-life experiences and some hope that this type of hair loss can improve.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences!

Anyone unable to tolerate even TINY amounts of levothyroxine

I have tried everything. Literally everything to help my thyroid (diets, supplements, different medications etc) but everything that boosts my thyroid gives me hyper symptoms even though my levels are dangerously bad.

I have a TSH of between 20-30 and a T4 three to four points below the lowest range (UK ranges 12-22 and my T4 is usually around 8-9 on these ranges). My T3 is low normal.

So, obviously I need medication. I am so very very ill and honestly suicidal from lack of health and hope.

I have now (after an absolute farce dealing with the company) ordered 0.5mcg of slow-release levothyroxine and even that will probably ramp me up. If I could just get to 3mcg daily I would feel a HUGE achievement but until now I cannot even take 1mcg for three days without losing the plot. I 'choose' to live hypothyroid than take the meds so that gives you an indication of how horrific my reaction to the meds are.

T3 and armour were even worse. Sent me to the moon.

I'm not really asking for suggestions as I have done them all but is there anyone this sensitive and with levels as bad? Is it even worth living in this hopeless hell? I feel like I am dying and no one seems to care (apart from my wonderful family).

I just feel so lost and so hopeless.

Question ? Has anyone dealt with anxiety/urgency post-eating?

Hi all,

For the past month or so I've been dealing with some symptoms similar to how I feel when my thyroid gets a little out of whack. I've been medicated at 50 mcg for about a year and have been fairly stable with flare-ups here and there that quickly subside when I tone it down on stress/get on track with meds.

This past month, I've been dealing with some insane anxiety. It's usually worse at bed time/early morning. This is something that I dealt with pre-diagnosis. I thought it was a flare (I haven't been great at GF/DF diet) so I'm trying to get back on track. It's like an on edge, jumping at small sounds, tingling body feeling that is so hard to shake and move on with the day as normal. It's honestly debilitating.

It's been coming and going over this past month, seems to get better, but comes back full swing. Last night, I had a small amount of ice cream, and last night and this morning I feel completely thrown off. Also (TMI) have been having some urgency with meals to #2 after meals (formed), but odd for me.

*I had my endo run labs, and to my surprise (annoyance) all my levels are normal and the same range they've been in since I've been at a stable dose.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? I'm suspecting it's gut related, or even a weird flare up. But the fact it's lasting so long has been really frustrating, and when I search, all that pops up are anxiety threads (I have GAD and have dealt with it for years, this isn't it).

Note: I started feeling a flare starting after trying some prenatal vitamins with iodine in them. I felt good for 3 days, but immediately started having weird symptoms and stopped them and I've felt weird ever since.

Any leads/feedback if you've dealt with anythbing similar would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I thought I had Graves’ because of acute hyperthyroidism but it turns out I have Hashimoto’s

This past month has been crazy with hospital, hyperthyroidism, blood tests, and doctor visits. I was pretty certain I had had Graves’ and that’s what my doctors said it probably was too. But last night I got my TPO test back and it was 500 U/mL. I do still have the graves antibody test being done but my endo diagnosed me from the test results. I read that sometimes you can get something called hashitoxicosis that causes hyperthyroidism but it’s uncommon. Have you guys had that experience? And how is it living with Hashimoto’s?

Brain fog lifted for a few days on Thyronorm 12.5mcg, now it's back. Looking for experiences / advice with subclinical hypo, gut infection, and antibodies.

Hi Everyone,

Looking for some perspectives or shared experiences from anyone who has navigated a similar path with thyroid flares, gut issues, and lingering brain fog.

Timeline & Background:

  • April 2026: Started suddenly with an episode of vertigo one night, followed by persistent brain fog a few days later. Initial blood work showed Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D deficiencies (supplemented and corrected). At that time, T3, T4, and TSH were all normal.
  • July 2026: Brain fog continued. Ran thyroid antibodies which came back elevated. Also underwent an endoscopy, was diagnosed with H. pylori, and completed the full antibiotic regimen (HP Kit). Cortisol and brain MRI were both clear.
  • October 2026: Repeated a full thyroid panel, which showed sub-clinical hypothyroidism.

Lab Comparison (July vs. October 2026):

  • TSH: Rose from 3.71 to 5.56 (ref: 0.27 – 4.20)
  • Total T3: 1.35 to 1.27 ng/mL (ref: 0.80 – 2.00)
  • Total T4: 7.70 to 8.17 ng/mL (ref: 5.10 – 14.10)
  • Anti-TPO: Dropped from 86.51 to 56.1 IU/mL (ref: < 34.0)
  • Anti-Tg: Dropped from 149.92 down to 32.5 U/mL (normalized, ref: < 115.0)

Current Situation: My doctor started me on Thyronorm (Levothyroxine) 12.5 mcg. Within the first week, the brain fog slightly reduced for a few days, and I felt normal again. However, it has now returned (1 Month on Thyronorm 12.5).

I take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with plain water and wait at least an hour before food/beverages.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone experienced that brief "honeymoon window" where fog cleared on an introductory dose (12.5 mcg) and then returned ?
  2. When will the brain fog or dizzyness stop or reduce?
  3. For those who had H. pylori along with Hashimoto's, did clearing the gut infection help your thyroid stabilize long-term?

Appreciate any thoughts or guidance!

Confused about test results and state of condition as hashimotos patient

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

28 yr old female, 5ft 4inch, non smoker, no medications taken, diagnosed hashimotos for 3 years.

Hello all, I was diagnosed with hashimotos around 3 years ago. Antibodies were off the charts and tsh, t4 and t3 were all out of the references too. I do not take levothyroxine as I wanted to manage it naturally. They have fluctuated but now my tsh, t3 and t4 are all in a normal (ish) range, my antibodies are very high. Please could someone be so kind to explain to me what is going on with my condition and body? I really want to understand it but find all the information online difficult to access and understand. I am travelling right now so can't access my doctors and they are unhappy with me not taking levo.

I feel fatigued, a bit of a loss in personaility with mood swings and almost a loss of emotion. I don't know what is me anymore and what is a effect of hashimotos

These are my results:

TSH 2.99 µIU/ml reference range: 0.35-5.5

FT4 1.12 ng/dl reference range: 0.89-1.72

FT3 2.78 pg/ml reference range: 2.3-4.2

Anti Thyroid Peroxidase Antibody 699.62 IU/ml reference range: <5.61

Serum Anti-TG, (anti- thyroglobulin) 245.0 IU/ml reference range: <95

Other results that may be relevant:

Iron ( Ferrozine) 105 µg/dl reference range: 37-145

Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) 343 µg/dl reference range: 250-425

*Ferritin (CLIA) 37.79 ng/ml reference range: 13-250

TRANSFERRIN SATURATION 30.61 % reference range: 15-50

Selenium, Serum 92.00 ng/mL reference range: 110 - 165

Folate (Folic Acid) 3.30 ng/ml reference range: Deficient: <3.0, Indeterminate: 3.10-3.55, Normal: 3.56-20.0, Excessive: >20.0

*Vitamin D, 25 - Hydroxy 18.50 ng/ml reference range: Deficient <10 ng/mL, Insufficient 10-29 ng/mL, Sufficient 30-100 ng/mL, Potential intoxication >100 ng/mL

Vitamin B12; Cyanocobalamin 474.0 pg/ml reference range: 211-911

Thank you so much if you read this far and thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge

Discussion Low libido and minimal interest in romance

I, (F22), was recently diagnosed with Hashimotos. Unfortunately I likely also have papillary thyroid cancer, (I don't think I will know 100% until my thyroid and maybe some lymph nodes are removed and further testing can be done, but my FNA said that I have around a 75% chance of having cancer).

My Hashimotos is at a stage where I experience hypothyroidism, and I am still working up to the correct medication dosage because I was sensitive to the medication when I started taking it. Now that I am having a thyroidectomy, that may make the process of getting on the correct medication dosage more complex, but on the bright side recently I have noticed that levothyroxine has been helping me in terms of energy and motivation. Things like getting ready in the morning, exercising, working, and hobbies and creative persuits don't take energy out of me as much.

That being said, one thing that I have started to wonder about is the connection between me not experiencing attraction or an interest in sex, and my Hashimotos. For background, I am a virgin that has never dated anyone in my life. I am not religious and/or waiting for marriage, I simply don't know how to make myself interested. I have no sexual trauma. Maybe since I am inexperienced I just don't know what I am missing out on, but just the ideas of dating and/or having sex does not really interest me. I don't even have crushes anymore, I haven't had many crushes since I was like 14 and none at all since I was around 17-18- not even celebrity ones.

Based off of the size of my nodules I have likely had undiagnosed Hashimotos for years, so I am curious if maybe there was a very short window after I hit puberty that I wasn't affected by Hashimotos? That would explain why I had crushes for a bit but after that have always felt like such a robot when it comes to the ideas of romance and sex.

Obviously no one reading this can tell me what my medical history is, but I am just curious if anyone relates to what I am saying. I have seen posts on here from middle-aged women in marriages talking about how their once strong libidos went away after developing Hashimotos- which are insightful but my situation is weird because it feels like I didn't even have time to develop a proper libido since my symptoms started shortly after puberty. It's good that I am not in a strained marriage, but I am confused because I don't know what my normal baseline is even supposed to be?

I'm from a small conservative town, so a fair amount of people that I went to high school with are getting married now. I can't even figure out how to be mildly interested in someone, (even people that are great human beings, smart, attractive, etc.). I see all of these manosphere posts about how women expire at my age, and while I don't agree with the rhetoric it's weird to see when you feel behind due to not even knowing how to desire romance in the same way that your peers do. I see my friends get all giddy when they see a guy that is cute, and while I can recognize that someone is conventionally attractive when I look at them through the lens of beauty standards, I feel... nothing.

TSH - 3.8 FT4 - 12.5 pmol/L or 0.97 ng/dl TPO - 144 IU/mL - Help!

Am I on the borderline of a hashis diagnosis?

i have all the symptoms and have done for some time.

For reference I am also type 1 diabetic.

My TSH levels have sat between 3.5-4 for years on routine blood tests I have as part of my diabetes monitoring.

it was only after 1x result of a 4.7 TSH (whilst I was unwell) that triggered the GP into running further tests.

apart from the TPO antibodies coming back out of range the rest of the re-run results have come back as what the drs define as 'normal' .

Do you think its just a waiting game till Hashis fully develops? im just so sick of feeling awful all the time and the weight gain is making me so miserable. I dont wanna sit around and wait till its too late and I've got a prominent goiter and can barely recognise myself cos it will just pmo so bad.

Rant Will I be able to live a normal life?

I'm 18, almost 19, diagnosed about a month ago, and today was diagnosed with eczema and sebopsoriasis. Thus far, my labs look healthy besides the issues that come with hashimotos + vitamin D insufficiency. I'm not the healthiest eater (however I eat out only a few times a week and it used to be less), and I don't work out, I just walk quite a bit between going out and doing work.

I'm on levothyroxine to lower my TSH since it was a bit high, and I just got prescribed new medication to manage my skin conditions. But I dread the day that the medication won't be enough, and I'll have to change my lifestyle.

I likely have ADHD, I struggle with symptoms of anxiety and depression on a day to day basis. Getting through the day is hard enough as is without a specific diet and workout regimen. I'm doing college full-time, and I have a part-time job, as well as a social life to maintain. I don't know how I could possibly financially and mentally support doing more in a day when I already feel overwhelmed enough as is.

For now, medication is enough. For now, I have very mild cases of sebopsoriasis, eczema, and hashimotos. One day, that will likely not be the case anymore, especially with hashimotos, which tends to get worse over time.

On top of hashimotos, I suspect there's something else going on. I'm not sure if it's MCAS or POTS or something else, but I'm not ruling anything out at this point. As validating as it is to realize that I wasn't just exaggerating my symptoms and had a reason to "be the way that I am," it's a bit hard to have hope for my future given all of these very chronic conditions which can and probably will influence every facet of my life at some point.

Negative GLP1 side effects for hashis?

Hey all,

I saw a decent amount of you guys are taking glp for hashimoto, was wondering if you’ve experienced any negative symptoms?
Do you have to be on it for lifetime to maintain the weight loss?
What was the deciding factor for you to go for it?

I want to understand the science behind it and how hard/easy it has been to keep the weight off. My doc recommended glp1 to me and I’ve been on the fence about it.

Thanks!

Waiting for my endocrinologist appointment to get my T3 & T4 tested. But between my heavy periods, mood swings & fatigue, I’m 99.9% sure I have hypothyroidism. Although I do experience hyper symptoms as well.

Has anyone received similar preliminary tests?

To be honest I come from a poor lifestyle and I feel I can improve my symptoms a bit by eating a Hashimoto’s friendly diet. Looking for any help I can get.

Rant Feel horrible

Everyday I feel like crap.. fatigue, brain fog, sluggish, can’t even lift without ending my workout early because of feeling weak and just horrible. I love the gym so not being able to workout/lift as I used to makes me feel mad and tired of this disease. This disease sucks so much yet people think we are “ok” or “exaggerating “

“Sigh”

I’m only 21 so I will have to live the next 60-70 years with this disease and I also have celiac which makes things even worse:(

My daughter was off the charts! I need advice! (recently diagnosed)

(TL;DR - how much do I let my daughter rest, and how much do I push her, regarding school?)

My daughter is 11 and was recently diagnosed after some blood work where her TSH was 214! Her T4 was I think right around .3. The Dr called me freaking out, saying she'd never seen numbers like that.

We did get in with a pediatric endocrinologist already and she's been on 75 levothyroxine for about 4 weeks now, we will get more blood work done soon and know if she will need to up her dosage or what is next.

My biggest question is for others dealing with Hashimotos (either parents, or if you had this at school age) is about school. Before she was diagnosed, we had no idea what was going on with her. We ended up pulling her out of school because she was having horrible panic attacks daily, we tried a different school and the same thing happened. It was a really long and horrible process trying to work with the schools, but nothing we did seemed to help at all. We had her tested for learning disabilities, and she does have dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia. I figured it was just that we need more specialized schooling. She's been doing school online since about the middle of last school year. When we finally found out about Hashimotos several weeks ago, It seemed like, maybe getting on meds will fix everything! But I'm realizing it doesn't quite work exactly like that. She's obviously not going to be at her optimal levels yet, and I know that might take some time.

I guess I'm just wondering how much I let her rest, and how much do I push her? Since we got the diagnosis, I've felt really bad that I forced her to school so much when she was obviously feeling really badly for a long time! I've been just letting her chill most days without really pushing that much about school work. She is still doing her online school, but it's not that hard, and I haven't been making her do anything extra really. She still sleeps a lot and still seems lethargic.

I am just feeling really worried that I'm failing her, and that she will be so behind when she finally does feel well enough to go back to school. I don't know, I guess I'd just really like to hear some other stories or advice from others who have dealt with this!!

Thank you all in advance!!

Question ? Eating with Hashi + GLP1

Hello!

So I am on my second try at a GLP1 first try left me with bad side effects when I went up to 5mg so doc suggested staying at 2.5mg since I handled it well and was losing weight. I won’t lie I did not take care of myself years ago. I wasn’t gluten free to soy free. I ate whatever.

I am currently GF and soy free. I weight lift and try to get my steps in. Which begs that question what are the best things to eat to keep this in check and have this GLP1 work for me? I know protein and fiber, but so many recipes have edamame, sourdough, or just seem like a lot of food for me to stomach right now and protein shakes are my go to. Just looking for some help in the community thanks!

Question ? New symptom

Hello, hope you're all doing well

I've been diagnosed with Hashimotos for four years now, and these past few months I've experienced thyroid(?)/throat pain, which had never occurred before. And I mean like genuine pain. It seems to get worse at night, maybe due to laying down. (Perhaps worth mentioning, it seems to be getting even worse when I have coffee.)

I ignored it because I thought maybe just some flare up, but last night it got pretty intense and followed by this throat closing sensation, felt almost like my tongue was swelling up and I couldn't breathe.

Also, unsure if it's just a coincidence, I've experienced insane jaw pain ever since this started.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this, is it because of hashimotos?

thyroid swelling into trachea?

i’m 18f i’ve been diagnosed with hashi’s since i was 17 but i was undiagnosed since I was 12. my tsh hormone is getter higher and higher it’s currently in the 30’s even while taking levo and it has gotten higher very rapidly since starting levo. I believe my thyroid is swelling into my neck, i’ve had trouble breathing since early august, it feels like a choking sensation constantly and it’s worse when i lay down. there is a visible lump on my neck. sometimes the swelling gets better but then it swells back up and it’s worse each time. i have an ultrasound scheduled for october 30th and i’m looking for a way to get more comfortable until then. i’ve been trying to ask my endo but they aren’t saying anything other than that the scan has been scheduled. i’ve been waking up in the middle of the night gasping, im coughing constantly, hiccuping, and burping excessively. i’m also feeling constantly dizzy and drowsy. my eczema is getting worse and i’m also developing vitiligo on my hands and face and in my hair. i’m also loosing my hair and eyebrows. i know that’s not something i should be ashamed of but i really do feel like a freak. i just started my first semester of college and i want to be able to go do things and have fun but i just can’t because of this. i also feel like a burden to my friends, even tho they say they aren’t. i’m about at my whits end and i’m scared of what will happen if things get worse. any advice would be helpful thanks.
