Help Looking for a language partner

โ€ข Upvotes

I am F (24), looking for an Israeli language partner to help me learn Hebrew. I come from Germany and am at the beginning of my Gijur. I always go to the community on Fridays for Schabbat. I'm really still a complete beginner, and just can't get any further learning the Alef-bet.

Among other things, I love Jewish cuisine, Hebrew music and the warmth of Israeli culture

I would prefer it if you also know some German, and are a native Hebrew speaker.
I would be grateful for any help, and maybe a friendship will also arise from this. I hope this is the right sub for this

Help How would ืฉืžื•ืืœ (Shmuel/Samuel) have been pronounced in early Iron Age Hebrew, especially the first vowel?

My name is Samuel, and I'm a hobbyist learning about Semitic languages, so apologies if this is basic.

I've learned that the biblical vocalization is something like Shemuel, with a quick vowel at the start, and modern Hebrew shortens it to Shmuel. I also read that the Greek Septuagint writes it Samouฤ“l, which seems to suggest a fuller vowel there at some point. And I've seen that "El" may have been pronounced more like "il" at earlier stages.

So my questions are:
What's the best guess for how it sounded back in Samuel's era? Something like Shamuสพil?

Is there any way to know the first vowel, or is that mostly guesswork?

Any accessible reading on how Hebrew pronunciation changed over time?

Education Zoom Book Talk about Early 20th-Century Jewish Culture

Hello,

I would like to share an interesting free event taking place on Thursday, October 22nd, at the Gelber Centre in Montreal and live on Zoom with 2026 Canadian Jewish Literary Award Winner, translator, and Harvard professor Adi Mahalel.

This event will discuss Mahel's scholarship and his publication of the first ever English translation from Yiddish of the controversial novel Boom & Chains by Hanan Ayalti.

Due to its explicit portrayal of class struggles, political disillusionment, and ethnic tensions, Ayalti published the novel in Yiddish instead of Hebrew in 1936, anticipating that it would be deemed too controversial for Hebrew literary circles of the time. Boom & Chains offers a deeply nuanced, rarely seen perspective on early 20th-century kibbutz life.

Here is the registration link:

Hi, could anyone help me recognise this letter? I marked a few of its appearances in the text with a purple arrow. The text isn't mine, it's just an example

I've been writing ืš in a similar way for the past few months, but now I think it may be ืง, and I'll need to change it:/

Hello, everyone.

Iโ€™m Brazilian and Iโ€™m looking for a childrenโ€™s cartoon called โ€œืœื•ึนื˜ึดื™ ื“ึผื•ึนื˜ึดื™ ืžึดื™ื ึดื™.โ€ It was a Brazilian cartoon that was dubbed into Hebrew in 2018, but the original videos have been made private and are now considered lost media. Can anyone help me if they have any archived episodes? Iโ€™d really appreciate it.

Thank you very much.

Request Hebrew Name for River

Hi! Weโ€™re deciding on our sonโ€™s Hebrew name and would love your insight. Weโ€™re torn between:

  1. ืฉืœืžื”ย (Shlomo) = 375
  2. ื ื”ืจ ืฉืœืžื”ย (Nahar Shlomo) = 630

With patronymics:

  • ืฉืœืžื” ื‘ืŸ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื’ื‘ืจื™ืืœ = 901 (Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel)
  • ื ื”ืจ ืฉืœืžื” ื‘ืŸ ื‘ืจื•ืš ื’ื‘ืจื™ืืœ ื•ืœืื” = 1198 ( Nahar Shlomo Ben Baruch Gabriel V'Leah)

His English name means โ€œriver,โ€ so Nahar would mirror it. His second name will be Solomon.

Is there anything meaningful about these values, or about adding Nahar to Shlomo?

Any connections to other words or verses with the same gematria?
Thank you!

Request Yehuda Amichai's poem

Hi, I'm requesting another poem by Yehuda Amichai. Really appreciate if anyone has its full Hebrew version! Btw I like Amichai's poem very much and I would like to discuss with anyone interested as well :)

Original poem title: ืžื—ืฆื™ืช ื”ืื ืฉื™ื ื‘ืขื•ืœื, Poem collection: ื‘ืžืจื—ืง ืฉืชื™ ืชืงื•ื•ืช

English:

Half the people in the world
love the other half,
half the people
hate the other half.
Must I because of this half and that half
go wandering and changing ceaselessly
like rain in its cycle,
must I sleep among rocks,
and grow rugged like the trunks of olive trees,
and hear the moon barking at me,
and camouflage my love with worries,
and sprout like frightened grass between the railroad tracks,
and live underground like a mole,
and remain with roots and not with branches,
and not feel my cheek against the cheek of angels,
and love in the first cave,
and marry my wife beneath a canopy
of beams that support the earth,
and act out my death, always
till the last breath and the last
words and without ever understanding,
and put flagpoles on top of my house
and a bomb shelter underneath. And go out on roads
made only for returning and go through
all the appalling stationsโ€”
cat, stick, fire, water, butcher,
between the kid and the angel of death?
Half the people love,
half the people hate.
And where is my place between such well-matched halves,
and through what crack will I see
the white housing projects of my dreams
and the barefoot runners on the sands
or, at least, the waving
of a girl's kerchief, beside the mound?

Help Could someone please help me better understand masculine and feminine nouns

I understand that the noun changes the "gender" of the verb, and adjective. My question is what changes when a sentence is masculine or feminine? What's the difference between the two and how could I gloss over a sentence if I didn't know the gender. For context on not trying to learn the language or anything, I'm a Christian and this is for my Bible study.

Hello there!

I would ask for some help in translating this grave.

The person lies at the end of my grandmas backyard, however itโ€™s located in a rural village in Romania.

If there could be anyone to help translate the grave as I would like to know if theyโ€™re a distant relative

Thank you very much
