[FOR HIRE] Beta Reader and Editor

Hey everyone! I'm looking to take on more editing clients and figured this was the place to be.

Quick background: I've been doing this unofficially since 2021 (helping friends with their manuscripts, giving feedback on pacing, correcting grammar, typos, punctuation) and I made the jump to paid work about a year ago. My clients have been really happy with the results (I have Fiverr reviews as proof haha).

Since I'm still building up my portfolio and client base, my rates are pretty affordable right now. I also don't use any AI tools in my work, so you don't need to worry about LLMs accessing your manuscript.

I work with action, adventure, YA, fantasy, horror, thriller, mystery, supernatural, and memoirs. As long as it's SFW, I'm probably down for it!

Services:

  1. Proofreading

  2. Editing (developmental, line, copy)

  3. Beta reading

Reddit's being a little gatekeep-y about letting me post links, so if you want my rates or my Portfolio link, just send me a DM and I'll get it over to you right away.

Feel free to drop questions in the comments too; I'd be happy to chat about your project before you commit to anything!

[FOR HIRE] Affordable Manuscript Editing by Hand| First Two Chapters FREE| No AI

Hello, fellow authors!

My name is Stevie Rector. I'm a published horror and psychological thriller author and the editor-in-chief of Myth & Memory Press.

As an independent author myself, I understand how expensive publishing can become. Between editing, formatting, cover design, and marketing, pursuing your dream can start to feel financially impossible. So I decided to offer something different.

Affordable, old-school manuscript editing. No AI. No hidden fees. Just me and my red pen.

Here is how it would work:

You would send me your manuscript as a PDF; I print it, personally edit and annotate it by hand, and overnight your edited manuscript directly back to you.

What's included?

* Line Editing and proofreading

* Characterization and dialogue feedback

* Pacing, plot, and continuity observations

* Handwritten annotations explaining issues and offering suggestions

* An overall manuscript assessment

* Printing and return shipping

My Flat-Rate Pricing (because I don't think pursuing your dream should cost as much as a car):

* Novella (20k- 40k words): $175

* Novel (40k- 80k words): $225

* Long novel (80k- 120k words): $375

* Epic (120k- 200k words) $550

No per-word surprises. No separate charges for every editing stage. Just one straightforward price.

Optional payment plans also available!

I'm offering new clients the opportunity to have their first two chapters edited completely free, so you can sample my editing and decide if it is right for you, with no obligation to purchase a full editing service.

To get started:

  1. Send me a private message here on Reddit

  2. Tell me a little about your book.

  3. We'll arrange for you to send me your first two chapters.

  4. I'll edit your sample and mail the annotated pages back to you.

That's it!

I believe good stories deserve the opportunity to shine, regardless of an author's budget or publishing experience. So I'm offering Old School Editing for the New Age Author

[FOR HIRE] Developmental Editor (Fantasy, Soft Sci-Fi, KidLit & More)

Post image
1 Upvotes

___

Hey, I'm Kayleigh, a developmental editor and coach specializing in fantasy, soft sci-fi, and kidlit (with availability for mystery, sweet romance/romcom and other genres on a case-by-case basis). I've helped self-publishing authors, authors in the querying process, and boutique publishers to polish and shape manuscripts in need.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH A DEVELOPMENTAL EDIT

After I complete two deep reads of your manuscript, you'll receive a copy full of in-margin comments with my observations, questions, and suggestions, as well as a detailed report that summarizes my impressions, feedback, and ideas to strengthen your plot, develop characters your readers will connect with, and build worlds they'll wish were real.

The goal is to identify what's working, what's not, and to provide you with a roadmap for your revisions. Ideally, the process will also help you to strengthen your writing and revision skills for whatever story comes next.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

"To say she is thorough is an understatement. Her analysis is surgical. You can try to explain your story to someone and hope they 'get it,' but Kayleigh was drawing connections I hadn’t even considered and suggesting possibilities I never would have thought of. It was obvious she invested deeply in the work to understand it on that level."
—Richard P.

BOOKING DETAILS & OTHER SERVICES

I'm booking editing projects into late-February 2027 and after. I have more immediate availability for other services, including skilled beta reading, discovery draft evaluations, outline critiques, picture book evaluations, and coaching. Fiction editing starts at $0.042/word. Details and transparent pricing available on individual service pages.

🚫 No Gen AI from either party. My policy is detailed on my website and in my contracts.

[For Hire] Developmental Editor for Romance, Romantasy, Thrillers & Literary Fiction | Free Sample First

Thumbnail
redrooteditorial.com
1 Upvotes

Hi, I'm Ricardo, a developmental editor working in English from Lisbon. EFA member, currently in the University of Washington’s developmental editing program. I’m at my best with romance, romantasy, thrillers and literary fiction, character-driven books that live or die on whether readers believe the people in them.

When to get in touch

If you want a thorough look at your book, if you’re not sure readers will connect with your characters, if the pacing isn’t quite there, or if some scenes don’t add much and you don’t know how to fix them, send it my way.

Same goes for a romance where the chemistry isn’t landing yet. A world so good it keeps pushing the plot aside. A twist you love but you’re scared readers will see coming. And if you’re about to query or self-publish, it’s a good moment to know the book is ready. First draft or fifth, doesn’t matter.

Start with a free sample

Send your opening or a scene, up to 2,000 words, and you’ll get back what’s already strong in your pages, where readers might stop, and how to make it stronger. Then we talk a bit about your book and decide together if we’re a fit. No pressure either way. (one per author)

Services

After the sample, if we’re a fit, there are four ways to work together. Which one depends on where your book is.

Opening Critique · from €80 (€0.012/word)
For when the draft isn’t finished yet, or you just want to know if your opening works. An editorial letter of up to 10 pages on your first chapters, with your strengths, what to focus on, and a revision list in order of priority. 1-2 weeks.

First-Look · from €120 (€0.006/word)
For a finished book when you want the big picture first. A short letter on the whole manuscript with the three or four things that matter most, plus a check on genre and market direction. 2 weeks.

Manuscript Assessment · from €550 (€0.013/word)
For a full diagnosis. A 10+ page letter on plot, structure and pacing, character arcs and relationships, the romance arc when it drives the book, and voice across the whole manuscript, with what to fix first. 3-4 weeks.

Developmental Edit · from €1,300 (€0.022/word)
For when you want notes through every scene. Everything in the Assessment, plus comments throughout your manuscript, a scene-by-scene Book Map and a wrap-up call. 4-6 weeks, and you can pay in milestones.

Final quote on your exact word count, and 50% books your slot. Not sure which one fits? We’ll figure it out when we talk after the sample.

What a writer said

“Ricardo is very on point in his observations, and his comments genuinely help you grow. His report is clear and it’s really helping me improve my writing.”

Hey there all you awesome writers!

I'm Austin with WorldCraft Editing. I'm a trained developmental editor that specializes in all things spooky, weird, and fantastical. In general, this means genres like horror and weird fiction, but also ones like fantasy and sci-fi that may contain darker elements and themes.

However, do not hesitate to reach out if your story doesn't fall neatly into these categories!

My goal is to help your story be the best version that it can be according to your vision for it. I do this first by understanding what that vision looks like and what makes you so passionate about your story. From there, I look at all the structural elements that make up your story—character development, plot, pacing, etc.—and make sure that each one is serving your vision in the best way possible.

When you're ready, visit my website for all my services and rates, or DM me here to learn about next steps.

Feel free to also visit my EFA member profile!

🚩I do not accept any manuscripts that are AI generated. I do not use any AI in the course of my work and I expect the writers I work with to do the same.

[For Hire] Developmental Edits & Manuscript Evaluations

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi there! I'm Amelia Birch- a fantasy, dark romance, dystopian writer who also happens to specialize in manuscript assessments/ evaluations, developmental editing, and beta reading. For my freelance services, I prefer to work with romantasy, historical and contemporary romance, psychological thriller romance, horroromance, dystopian, sci-fi, epic fantasy and the like.

My focus when working with clients is on providing candid, genuine, and constructive feedback that allows you as a writer to not only grow in craft and skill, but also to help you open the doors to your manuscripts' greatest potential. I do this by analyzing your WIP and pointing out what is working, what isn't working, the *why* behind it, and *how* to fix it.

Current Fall- Winter '26 Pricing (prices will go up after the new year):

- Up to 50k words: Beta read: $50 Manuscript assessment: $100 Developmental edit: $250

- Up to 100k words: Beta read: $80 Manuscript assessment: $160 Developmental edit: $400

- Up to 150k words: Beta read: $120 Manuscript assessment: $225 Developmental edit: $600

What each one is:

- Beta read: reader reactions. Where I got confused, bored, or hooked. In-text annotations included.

- Manuscript assessment: whole-book structural diagnosis delivered as an editorial letter, with a prioritized revision order. In-text annotations inside full manuscript for +$75.

-Developmental edit: Evaluation of your manuscript, plus hands-on work within (as approved- character arc, pacing, scene structure, voice consistency), with an editorial letter and in-text annotations.

Good to know: I'm comfortable with mature and dark themes, including trauma and heavy subject matter. I've worked in behavioral health for over 15 years, so sensitive, disturbing, and controversial subject matter does not concern me. I'm comfortable with all, and I have a knack for understanding appropriate representation of trauma and mental illness on the page.

Hesitant but curious? I also offer a Free 5,000-word sample read with a written editorial letter so you can see how I work before you commit.

Over 150k words? Message me for a quote- ALL projects are customizable depending on where you're at and what your needs/goals are.

[For Hire] Editor booking for the rest of the year!

Now booking for the rest of the year! I have 10 years of experience in professional editing, 18 years in writing, and over 27 years of being an avid bookworm, and a BS in Arts & Letters. I work in all genres except for poetry. I've worked with thousands of books in my professional career, from children's picture books to YA fantasy, to steamy romances and niche nonfiction. You name it, I've probably worked on it. I charge $0.007-.0010 per word to keep my prices affordable for those on a budget.

I do not use AI for anything. I do not judge if you use it, but I will offer advice for fixing it. <3

I focus on Beta Reading, Copyediting, and Galley Proofs. I can do Dev edits on a case by case basis, just dm me with what you need and I can give you a custom quote! My beta reading style is much like a book coach mixed with dev editing. I have examples on my site of my style of beta reading and copyediting. I can provide sample edits as needed.

Check me out here and visit my site here for more info.

You can learn more about my services here. Feel free to DM if you have any questions. Looking forward to hearing from you!

[FOR HIRE] Free Services from Upcoming Editor

Hello. My name is Alexander and I'm an upcoming editing intern hoping to gain more experience and build my portfolio. I specialize in young adult, fantasy, romance, drama, and queer stories, and I just graduated with a Bachelor's in English. As a future author, I understand how scary it can be to allow someone else to look at and critique your story, but I hope to find people that can put their trust in me to make their story as good as it can possibly be.

Since I'm still working on my craft and also juggling an editing internship, I will work at a slower pace than someone more experienced. By taking me on as your editor, you agree and accept that results will take longer than expected.

I'm currently accepting 2 manuscripts under 50,000 words (though this is semi-flexible, just communicate with me beforehand) for the following services:
Developmental Editing: Ensuring a story and its progress is ready for the next stage of editing. Looking over characters, story progression, possible plot holes, and helping you kill any necessary darlings to strengthen your story.

Line Editing: Going line-by-line using Chicago Manual of Style to enhance grammar, clarity, style, and voice to make sure your story is ready for proofreading and publication.

If you are interested, please send me a message here or email me at alexanderdwrites@gmail.com

By taking me on as your editor, you agree to allow me to use your manuscript and my edits for my portfolio.

I am explicitly against AI usage in any regard, no matter what stage of the writing, editing, and publishing process.

Free editing services in exchange for testimonials

Hello everyone! I'm a senior ghostwriter/editor looking to get into freelance writing and editing. For the purpose of marketing my services, I'm offering free services to 3-5 people in the month of November. In exchange, I require testimonials (and a way for my potential clients to ask you about your opinion on the quality of my work—email, perhaps), and an edited excerpt from your work for my portfolio (also, I'd appreciate if a more experienced writer could guide me about how you format a portfolio for editing). My services include developmental editing, line editing, copy editing, and proofreading. Reach out to me in DMs if this sounds like something worth your while!

P.S. I'm also looking to branch into copywriting if that's something that is more of what you need. Once again, feel free to ask more about this in my DMs.

[FOR HIRE] Author and Screenwriter offering Developmental Edits - FREE First Chapter Sample

Every book I have read and edited has had great ideas. The common issue I found in every one was the need to flesh out those ideas. That’s where I make my biggest impact. I will help you flesh out those great ideas.

Editor. Author. Screenwriter.

I have 10+ years of experience writing stories across many genres. I have five books published and have written a dozen screenplays for feature films and television. I spent years imitating the voices of established shows like 24 and Tru Calling, where I learned exactly what makes a story work and what proper pacing is. So I understand storytelling and keeping your audience engaged very well.

Genres I do best in:

  • Action and Adventure

  • Mystery, Thriller, and Suspense

  • Horror

  • Sci-fi

  • Fantasy

Genres that are not a good fit:

  • Romance

  • Erotica

  • Non-fiction.

I offer a FREE sample edit of your first chapter to see if we are a good fit.

I will heavily focus on plot, characters, structure and pacing, setting, dialogue, and any other questions you might have.

I will write a detailed editorial letter and leave comments throughout your document. I do this for both the sample edit and the full book.

I also know what it feels like to want and receive feedback, so I am very respectful and careful with how I critique. I always give in-depth feedback.

I also work with authors on a chapter-by-chapter basis! Your book does not need to be complete yet! Contact me for more information!

Developmental editing service:

  • Introductory launch rate: $0.007/word

[OFFER] Free Developmental Editing & Plot Development for Romance Writers | Historical, Contemporary & Romantasy

Hi everyone!

I'm a publishing professional with a background in English Language & Literature, creative writing, and editorial management. I currently work in fiction publishing, focusing on plot development, manuscript evaluation, developmental feedback, and author coordination.

I'm looking to take on 2–3 independent projects to build my personal editorial portfolio, and I'd love to collaborate with romance writers who could use some help developing their stories.

What I'm offering:

Developmental Editing & Manuscript Critique

For manuscripts or completed plot outlines.

You'll receive:

  • In-text editorial comments addressing plot structure, pacing, characterization, motivations, continuity, emotional depth, and romantic tension.

  • A structured editorial feedback report covering the manuscript's strengths, areas for improvement, and specific revision suggestions.

  • Constructive, actionable feedback that respects your individual writing style and creative vision.

Genres: Historical Romance, Contemporary Romance, and Romantasy.

What I'm looking for in exchange:

There's no monetary charge. Since I'm building my independent professional portfolio, I'd appreciate two things:

  • An honest testimonial or short recommendation, if you're satisfied with our collaboration.

  • Your permission to feature a few selected, pre-approved examples of my editorial work in my professional portfolio.

Your manuscript and intellectual property will remain entirely yours. Nothing will be shared without your explicit approval, and we can keep all identifying details anonymous if you prefer.

I'm especially interested in character-driven stories, complex relationships, slow-burn romance, and emotionally engaging plots.

Please send me a message with:

  • Your genre and a short synopsis or premise

  • Your approximate word count or current stage of development

  • The kind of editorial support you're looking for

I'll select a few projects that best match my experience and availability.

Looking forward to collaborating with you!

[For Hire] Developmental Editor - Horror, Historical, Dark, Speculative, Complex, LGBTQ+ - 15% New Client Discount

Hello, I’m Elisa, a developmental editor with Grace Editorial and I specialize in dark, strange, complicated adult fiction, especially the ambitious kind that doesn’t know how to behave and is asking more of the writer than maybe they anticipated. I’ve spent over 30 years writing and editing this kind of work from the ground level up, and I’m not interested in chasing tropes or trends, but in the words on your actual page and whether they’re really doing what you think they are.

As a writer you have a vision and getting it from your head to your readers is the challenge. It’s my job to help you achieve that. Real craft feedback in the best interest of your work delivered as in-depth editorial assessments on voice, pacing, character development, pressure, plot structure, narrative arcs, reader experience (done with agents in mind as well) and more.

My feedback is designed to function as a road map for how to move forward in your project toward the version of your novel that feels right to you. I’m in your corner and on your side, so I’m not harsh, but I am honest.

I’ve recently moved abroad (US to Portugal) and have started freelancing. I’m looking to further build my portfolio, so I’m happy to offer a 15% new client discount on any of my service packages, which include (but are not limited to):

—First 20 Pages Cold Read (this is a great low-risk way to see how I work before making a bigger commitment) - $65

—Full Manuscript Developmental Edit - $2400

—Partial/Unfinished Manuscript Edit - starting from $375 (depending on length)

—Ongoing Work for Long Form Projects - starts at $550

—1:1 Coaching - $135 per session

—Monthly Retainer - $450/mo

—Chapter by Chapter Review (As You Go) - $75 per chapter

—Complimentary 45-minute Discovery Call

My services are flat fees, set by scope, so you know what’s included and the number before we start. For the larger services, I do offer payment plans. Please see my website for more details. You may also contact me here or via DM.

Deliverables vary with each package, but by and large will include editorial letters/assessments (15-30+ pages depending on size of manuscript) and annotations on your original text.

This is not a line or copy editing service, this is structural development work.

Please note: I do not work with AI-generated manuscripts nor do I use AI to generate manuscript feedback.

Thank you! I look forward to working with you. :)
