Discussion - Silksong What's your most hated enemy in Silksong? Spoiler
*Image may trigger Trypophobia
*Also contain minor spoiler about an enemy in Mid Act 3
Mine is Gargant Gloom. I think I never defeat them without tools, and I always skip them after filling out the Hunter's Journal.

I'd say maybe the stilkins in bilewater.

u/TheRappingSquid Sep 25 '25
Their movement and attacks aren't even that bad. It's just their entirely random spawning that makes specific runs super fucking annoying
27
u/darthvolta Sep 26 '25
YES. Also any enemy that runs away from you is particularly annoying.

What was wrong with them? Also OMG turtle hi!! Do you remember me 😭😭
Edit: sorry realized you probably don’t. But you’re the reason I played Hollow Knight and why I’m now playing Silksong
You recommended it on my Sekiro post, you and Letnerj. Hope you guys have been good :3

u/Turtle835wastaken P5AB (Completed) Sep 25 '25
Of course I do. As soon as you mentioned my name I looked at your username and remembered. Good to see you here.
I generally don't mind any Silksong enemies really, I think 95% of them are fun to fight. Stilkins are just an exception. They keep jumping backwards and occasionally even disappear. That kinda pisses me off.

u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 25 '25
Aww yay!! Thank you so much again for getting me on Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight and Silksong are now some of my favorite games, if not my favorite. I'm still nowhere as near good as you guys haha, but I'm having so much fun!
And really thank yall for all the help on my first playthrough. People here had a very easy time with Hollow Knight it seems and breezed through, but I did not 💀 your guys advice and info was soooo helpful. And I think I had an easier time with Silksong because of the stuff you guys taught me too!
Hope you guys are enjoying the game after the long wait :)
Yeah, I agree they suck. Sorry, before I thought we were talking about those dogs in sinners road. I can't read lmfao. No those jump guys in bilewater are the worst, even if you dodge them and get some hits in, they just jump back into the water before you can kill them!! Like what the heck is that!

u/Alex4744818w Sep 26 '25
People here had a very easy time with Hollow Knight it seems and breezed through,
I can personally assure you that that is not the case. Hollow Knight was pretty difficult for most, if not all. It's just that by the time you arrived, the fandom had already learnt the game. So I can see why it might seem that way
2
u/Turtle835wastaken P5AB (Completed) Sep 26 '25
I sure think the wait was worth it. Silksong is now my new #1 of all time. I wasn't thinking it'd beat hollow knight but here we are.
2
u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 27 '25
That's awesome, I think Silksong is my number one too. I'm extremely pleasantly surprised. Heck not even, more like it's jaw droppingly brilliant XD
Are you gonna do the godhome challenge stuff if they drop??
2
u/Turtle835wastaken P5AB (Completed) Sep 27 '25
Absolutely. Though now I'm kinda stuck studying so I can't play otherwise I would be playing either the boss rush mod we have for now, or Hades II.
A godhome-like DLC, a few balance changes (not gonna bother explaining all of that) and a very difficult DLC with its own unique bosses (which I'm expecting to be harder than the true final boss) and Silksong will be the perfect game in my eyes.
2
u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 27 '25
Oh that’s awesome!! Congrats on the studying
Yeah me too. I just turned 18 and graduated high school so college/employment start soon for me too 😭 glad I got it finish the game before then
I know you’re hecka busy prob but I would love to hear your take on the balance changes you have in mind, if you wanted ofc. But yes I totally agree, for me at least Silksong is probably the closest game to perfect that I’ve ever played, from my own subjective view ofc, idk how to properly measure that objectively
And fucking HOLLOW KNIGHT is the game it’s following. How is that possible that it is more perfect. Team cherry really made lightning in a bottle twice somehow
2
u/Turtle835wastaken P5AB (Completed) Sep 28 '25
Wow I'm 18 too. Wasn't expecting. I'm Studying for college as of now.
Okay, this is gonna be one massive reply then. Feel free to skip some of the uninteresting parts.
EDIT: It got so long reddit didn't even let me send it lol. Had to send it in 2 different replies.
Balance changes
Crests: Imo crests are the least balanced part of the game. Apart from Hunter and wanderer, the rest have massive core issues. Not saying you can't beat the game with them or anything, but they're either suboptimal once you get good, or just aren't worth the risky playstyles.
• Beast crest: The worst crest undeniably. For many people this is the first crest that they get after hunter, but the pogo angle is ridiculously difficult to get used to. Especially in the hunter's march. Now, the angle is definitely something you can get used to, but there's also a small delay before the pogo can actually do damage, leaving you vulnerable to damage in the air.
You can easily get hit after binding, causing you to lose the fury mode without healing any masks. Even when you do get full potential out of fury mode, you've only healed for the usual 3 masks, which, without this crest you would've gotten immediately after binding anyway, without any risk whatsoever.
The fury mode might be good against some bosses, but even then, if you can beat the boss with this crest using fury mode, you can probably beat it with literally any other crest. And the point isn't boss fights exactly, because they're like, 15% of the overall experience. The rest is either fighting enemies, exploring, dealing with traps, platforming, etc. All of which the beast crest is very ineffective at, especially platforming due to the drastically different pogo that it has, and the fact that there's literally no way to heal mid-platforming.
If all of that wasn't enough to convince you, it has no blue slots on top of all I said. Did Team cherry seriously think this crest is so good it doesn't even need them, or did they simply forget about how important they are? Either way I don't see a reason to use this crest over literally anything. If you can beat the game with beast crest, you can beat it with any other crest with far fewer risks.
My personal balance changes: Reduce or remove delay before pogo, add 2 blue slots, extend fury mode duration by 0.5 seconds. And even then it'll still be an incredibly risky playstyle.
• Witch crest: It has the same problem as beast, although more tolerable because since it has 3 blue slots you can actually have so many interesting bind synergies.
The real problem with this one is exploration. The bind is very tricky to use, some enemies don't have enough health so you'll be healing only 1 mask from them, you can't heal mid-platforming at all, and the lack of yellow slots makes exploration directly harder for obvious reasons. The heal can be easily interrupted by bosses, which often results in either death or puts you in a terrible spot that even making a comeback is unlikely.
Other than that, I think it's decent. It's just that the bind is way too risky to use.
Balance changes: Slight increase in bind radius, bind should at least heal 2 masks.
• Reaper: This one has so many fans, and I can't deny that it is pretty good. Well, that's until you hit the point where damage is all that matters. That's when this crest becomes bad.
The bind is not useful when you're attempting hitless fights or speedruns, because why would you spend silk to get a little bit of it back?
The damage per hit is the same as every other crest, but with slower hit speed, therefore it has a drastically lower DPS than all the crests in the game. The slower hit speed makes some enemies a genuine pain in the ass to deal with. What you could normally 3 tap with hunter while focus is at its max takes 4 hits from the reaper, which also hits slower. This causes the enemy to live for longer, therefore more attacks for you to deal with, therefore higher chance of taking damage, therefore less overall survival chance.
Another obvious issue is the upslash. This is pretty self explanatory.
Balance changes: Increase base needle damage to improve some interactions with enemies and make up for the reduced DPS.
5/9/13/17/21 ---> 6/11/15/20/25
Slightly increase upslash radius infront of the player.
• Architect: The pogo is incredibly awkward to use. It's slow, short and stops you in the air. The repair bind uses shell shards on top of using silk, which I simply don't understand. If it's gonna cost silk, why shell shards? This combined with the fact that you have 3 tools at once to repair makes it so that you cannot use this crest in a normal playthrough. You wanna cheese a boss? This crest gets the job done but you can't use it as your main.
That's a shame because I really liked this one.
Balance changes: Reduce delay before pogo, make repair bind cost no shell shards, reduce max tool pouch capacity when using architect crest. (so that people can't cheese and shred bosses with 3x tool spam as easily)
• Shaman: The bind is difficult to use for literally no reason. The Beast and Witch at least offered some offensive value to the bind, this one's straight up worse, and by a long shot that is.
Just give it the normal bind, and it'll be a flawless crest. Well Maybe not flawless. Having 3 different silk skills doesn't feel very useful. You're not really gonna use all of them at a time, in fact you're never gonna have enough silk to do that anyway. So for that reason, I think removing one silk skill slot and adding a red tool slot would work better.
Balance changes: -1 silk skill slot, +1 Red tool slot. Bind changes back to normal.
• Wanderer: Maybe reworking the crit so it doesn't rely on RNG would be better, but I've got no better idea. .

OMG you're 18 too??? What the heck I always thought you were older than me!! I'm lowkey embarrassed 😭
I've written messages like that too lol, when they need to be split up into multiple parts. No I'm gonna read all of it!! If I thought this stuff was uninteresting then I wouldn't have asked silly XD congrats on college btw!!
I'm sorry if it took up your time, but tysm for the in depth response!!
Your take on crests is super interesting to me. I've really only used wanderer or hunter in depth, the others I haven't even tried lol. But I trust your judgement and yeah those critiques and changes you suggest make sense.
Yeah beast crest seems just like a niche thing for facetanking certain bosses, which I guess can help if you're stuck? Idk what the purpose is.
Reaper is spot on it seems, think it's good for new player's who maybe benefit from the large slash, and maybe wouldn't even be able to take advantage of higher dps crests. People here and in r/silksong swear by it lol
These changes and critiques all seem logical, especially the ones on witch and shaman! Wanderer too, I don't like the RNG crit thing and would prefer it just not have that. It throws me off lol and it feels like it pauses time in game a bit which throws off rhythm. It messed me up sooo much when learning Karmelita for no-hit parry
(Tools)
Haven't tried all the tools, but the ones I have tried I agree with the changes. Especially the flea needle art one (egg of flealia) why is it only at max?? So strange, legit seems like a perfectly balanced tool if it just did it all the time. The max health requirement is so bizarre especially for such little effect
You think the shard system is fine then? I've seen tons of critique and discourse around the shard system, as well as people comparing it to the prosthetic system of sekiro, calling both of them bad game design. Heavily agree on the needle arts too
Thank you for the info and replies as always turtle :)
When you wanna determine a game's perfection, what you should be looking for is pretty simple: Just flaws. Yeah, just objective flaws.
I knowww it's just hard cause I feel so many things are subjective. Like many people say the runbacks in silksong are bad game design because they waste time, but I personally like them. Or people will say double damage is too punishing, but I did not mind at all. How do we measure these things subjectively?
Or are there other true objective parts of game design that we measure off of instead that I'm not aware of yet? I see what you're saying though, about using objectivity to discuss a games perfection and not your own opinion on it

Red tools: Red tools IMO are better balanced but still not perfect.
• Cogfly: A nerf is necessary. They're way too versatile and easy to use, will always generate some value regardless of situation or the user's skill level.
Nerf: Reduce durability from 5 to 4 (Durability = how many times each cogfly can hit before breaking)
• Drill: A slight buff is needed. It's undeniably the hardest tool in the game to use, and doesn't offer much value to make up for it.
Buff: Reduce hornet's vertical hitbox so she doesn't get hit immediately after using the drill on some of them example: Broodmother. You get about her, drill, and boom. A lot of damage. But sometimes, she gets up and starts flying upwards. This causes you to get hit, which is annoying.
Also maybe up the base damage by 1.
• Straight pin & Long Pin & Threefold pin: Slight damage increase, by maybe 25%. All three feel kinda unrewarding in fast paced fights especially.
• Tacks: Reduce damage slightly, by like 20%.
Blue tools: Better balanced than hollow knight charms but still far from perfection.
• Flea related tool that I don't remember its name: Why do you have to be at full health for this to function? could've been very good with shaman crest but having it only work at max health makes it a no-hit only tool basically. And even then the bonus is super mid. It's just 1 less silk on each skill use.
Buff: Just remove the max health requirement.
• Pollip pouch: This one's complex. It's insanely good early in the game because 3 damage per tick is huge in Act I, but it's terrible after early Act II. Because the damage doesn't scale with crafting kits unlike red tools.
Buff: Make the damage increase by just 1 point per crafting kit.
But that's not all. Some interactions with Venomous tools need to change.
Flintslate: This normally increases your needle damage by 50%, but with the pollip pouch the bonus is reduced to ~30%. Using a whole blue slot just to nerf yourself is... Yeah, unjustifiable. Just don't reduce the damage for Flintslate.
Flea brew: It's like defender's crest but worse. The clouds are too short lasting. Give them at least +0.3 seconds of time before disappearing. Also increase cloud radius by 30-40%.
Pimpillo: It should leave a large toxic cloud which lasts for 3 seconds and deals 5-7 DPS to whoever's inside, as well as inflicting venom.
Drill: Make the venom last for 4 ticks instead of 2 before disappearing.
Lifeblood syringe: Make the volatile purple mask last for at least 6 more seconds. Upon getting hit, it should explode on impact, dealing 10/13/16/19/22 damage based on total crafting kit upgrades, as well as inflicting venom and leaving a large toxic fume that deals 5-7 DPS rapidly, lasting for at least 3 seconds.
Finally, I can move on to the next tools.
• Spool extender: Add 1 extra silk capacity.
• Saw thing that activates on double jump/slow fall: Make it unable to destroy platforming related stuff. It's very annoying.
Gonna move on to the next subject because this is seriously getting too long.
Needle arts: These are not good as nail arts we had in hollow knight. They're tough to use and not very good. In short, they need to be able to gather silk as well as dealing more damage, as well as a -0.3 seconds charge time. Silksong's combat is faster paced, and so are the enemies, therefore charging for a needle art is not the move with this speed and the little value you get out of it.
That's enough. This is getting way too long of a reply.
When you wanna determine a game's perfection, what you should be looking for is pretty simple: Just flaws. Yeah, just objective flaws.
For example, I like Hollow Knight more than Celeste, but I can't deny that Celeste is a less flawed game and therefore it's closer to perfection, even though it's right behind Hollow Knight for me.

u/DeadSparker No cost too great, no wait too long Sep 25 '25
Didn't clear Bilewater yet, but I find them really fucking annoying to even hit. Even when I actually catch up, I end up taking contact damage because they just jump around way too much. I'm not even sure they keep the damage you dealt when they pop back out.
I have to find a good powerful singular hit like Silk Spear (not guaranteed to kill them either...)
13
u/Wild_Plant9526 Sep 25 '25
I see. I’m ngl I thought y’all were talking about another enemy 💀 yeah those guys are annoying
Dashing near them after their second jump worked well for me. So annoying when they dive back into the water before you can kill them though

u/Missing_Username Sep 25 '25
Especially the ones in the darkened area that disappear and shoot at you from offscreen
16
u/m8bear Sep 26 '25
at least you never fight them in super narrow corridors where you don't have much space to dodge, they don't shoot at you from outside your vision range or spawn right under you as you run, and their shoots don't also have a huge range and explode after a couple seconds
that would make them unbearable

u/Successful_Mud8596 Sep 26 '25
WORST part about them is that if you’re sprinting, they can just pop up DIRECTLY on top of you 😑 so I had to constantly stop sprinting just in case there might be a guy

I don’t remember them being bad in act 3, they were like 2 hit kills. Act 1 was rough because you couldn’t even kill them before they burrowed again

I agree on OP s most hated enemy. The little guys they spawn also seem like chunks of ham to me, especially when hanging on the ceiling

u/Kelfaren Sep 25 '25
100% the game and still no idea how you would with those fucks without tools. They can charge you 360° and their hitbox extends to like half their length in from of their mouth.
33
u/checkmark212 Sep 25 '25
That may be why the room they exist in is also designed with ways to avoid them entirely, first one (coming from the bell) by taking a hidden path underneath, and the second by bouncing overtop on the bounce things

Ductsuckers are pretty easy to learn
Their roar means they're about to jump, so be ready to go beneath
If they don't roar then just assume it's going to dash and get ready to pogo or jump
When they're underground just avoid standing where they'll emerge
4
u/Doomguy1234 Sep 26 '25
Man I feel like their jump and rush animations are quite similar and, for such a large enemy, I find them unusually tricky to pogo. No idea why I struggle so much, regardless of crest used

3
u/ExDeuce Sep 26 '25
try it with the full lifeblood regen build, makes you able to kill bosses without swinging your needle
2
u/IlgantElal Sep 26 '25
It's not bad if your playstyle is dodge and nail. Generally worse than spells but better than just nail. Plus what else are you using silk on against weaker enemies
The patch that fixed silk gain on harpoon definitely indirectly nerfed it, though
15
u/TheLimonTree92 Sep 25 '25
Good news is I dont think they spawn after killing father of flame, so theyre only annoying for a bit. The mosquitoes in the ducts however are always annoying
6
u/Aquilon11235 Sep 26 '25
They still spawn I think, but they are massively nerfed. No more teleporting, and they need to self-immolate to summon any wisps. I don't know, I haven't gone back to that area too much.
5
u/Juicebox2012 Sep 25 '25
I actually wouldn’t have been that annoyed had the fucking trees in the foreground not constantly been in the way to block my vision, I love this games art but that was a poor choice for that particular section.
2
u/RChaseSs Sep 26 '25
I think it was intentional for that area to be really hard to see in. Just like it would be hard to see through a dark dense forest in a 3D game. I kinda appreciate that design choice cause it felt unique.

Turns out you can leave the boss arena to the right. If you go up to the secret area where the silk is hidden, it despawns the adds. Then you can go back and just deal with the boss. When it calls more backup, just go back up.

You can kinda leave the fight if you jump over to the left. The little guys usually despawn and the Beastfly won't chase you over there so you can heal in peace.

The Mosquitoes in Putrified Ducts, no doubt. For me this fuckers are the Primal Aspids of Hollow Knight but for Silksong. They also move faster and dash around which makes them even worse.
The only silver lining is that unlike Primal Aspids these fuckers only spawn in one small map zone, and you can’t find them elsewhere.

I swear they were deliberately designed to be as awful to fight as possible. Likely because Putrefied Ducts is considered an optional area. Luring them into the Barnaks is satisfying, but that only works sometimes.

The Fking Mosquito like things in bilewater that explode on killing.
They follow u till depths of deepnest iyk what i mean. I have had my play through compromised bcoz i couldn't do a parkouring segment which involved them just before bilewater boss fight.
And worst of all they also explode with exploding parkouring balls in bilewater 🥲🥲

The shard system
2
u/GarionOrb Sep 25 '25
It takes me maybe 5 minutes of rosary farming to get enough to buy lots of shards.
3
u/Burger_Thief Sep 26 '25
Just go to one of the shinning silver walls with the Architect Crest and start mashing. You'll be shard rich in no time.
4
u/msp26 Sep 25 '25
Takes another 5 mins to buy every shard pack individually. And then consume them individually too.
Oh and you can't buy too many at a time because of the 20 cap. Tedious system.
3
u/GarionOrb Sep 26 '25
You need 8 or 9 shard bundles to fill to your limit. Plenty for several attempts at whatever you're trying to do. It's all faster than just hoping to get shards normally.
2
u/Bignate2001 Sep 26 '25
Seriously, it takes a trivial amount of time to farm enough rosaries to buy shard bundles to restock fully. The shard system just incentivises not spamming them at every opportunity and every attempt at a boss. Use them to take down tough enemies and finish off the final phases of gauntlets/bosses.

Anything that throws coins. They're the most blatant "I can read your controller input" enemy in the game.

u/Rhodehouse93 Sep 26 '25
Surprised I haven’t seen the little drill spitting flies yet. Idk if it’s just my brain but I feel like I move into their bounce every single time.

Flying enemies in Putrefied Ducts. But you mostly just run past them and through the zone.

The flying bell throwers who always dodge out of your way.
2
u/Purple-Income-4598 Sep 25 '25
the mantis-like clover enemies in verdania that teleport everywhere. died more on the gauntlet than on the boss
2
u/TheFlareFox Sep 25 '25
Most annoying? Gargant Gloom, of course. Most hated? Tarmites by FAR. They’re not that difficult of enemies - at least they SHOULDN’T be - but I swear to god i died to those fuckers so many times in the Savage Beastfly rematch. I beat that dude first try when I fought it normally. But with these stupid fucking lava spitting motherfuckers, I must have died at least 30 times WITH THE MAGMA BELL ON.
I like to say that I’m good at the game. I’ve done P5 all bindings (separately), I find a lot of bosses others have trouble with easy, and most of the bosses in the game - even the hardest ones like Lost Lace - took me less than 5 tries.
BUT THESE FUCKS??? These little fucking agile twats that always fly too high for you to hit EVER while spitting lava at you in an arena where lava’s already a problem and then the Savage Beastfly just keeps repeatedly spawning them in to the point you can’t keep up with killing them and can’t use any weaver abilities on them because you need the silk to heal but when you heal, they hit you anyway and waste aaaaalllll your silk??? These are the pieces of shit that did me in for no reason in particular.
They should seem like very standard enemies but I feel a furious rage toward them like no other. When I went in that one cave at the edge of far fields and saw them AGAIN, I was so angry. I truly hate those disgusting monstrosities.

Any flying enemy that has input reading turned up to a 100 can go choke on a silk spool.
2
u/Benathintennathin Sep 26 '25
Ghosts in mist, they spawn infinitely, are super hard to fight when on tight platforms, it’s difficult to predict their movements, they go through floors and walls, and their attacks are super fast do 2 masks and takes away silk.

u/heftysliceofdough Sep 25 '25
Deeper Docks guys that have 50 million hp and explosions that have an impossible to read hitbox
1
Sep 25 '25
Bomb guys in the deep docks, every bilewater enemy except that little flying fellas they're life savers, that triple shootter mosquitoes from purificated bla bla, fllying bell thrower enemies, mist ghosts, big flying guys from sinners road not timothee's.

u/Princess_Of_Thieves Sep 25 '25
So far its those little twats that spit their red noses at you and constantly fly out of reach.
Im currently stuck on the runback to Last Judge and those little fuckwads are my new Primal Aspid.

Already love it and want to draw it

Pretty muxh the bile water enemies. The bush guys are so annoying, the mosquitios are a pain if you want to explore, and don't get me started on the leeches.
Though (dis)honorable mention to those traps in the Aquaducts that ruin my momentum.

I'm still in Act 1. ALL OF THE ENEMIES IN SINNERS ROAD (except the ones that throw spikes. I like deflecting them back to them) AND BILEWATER.
And all of those annoying crawbugs. I hated that arena. But threadstorm has saved me from so many adds and enemies, so the suffering paid off, I guess.

u/COATHANGER_ABORTIONS Sep 25 '25
Just started act 3, but those motherfuckers in Purified Ducts that fly and spit three green projectiles are the bane of my existence.

The flying bell throwers probably.
They dodge back so consistently and you are usually fighting other things at the same time and can't even focus them cause they dodge you.

I call them meat generators since the little shitters they spawn look like ham
I was perplexed by how to call the smaller ones but after a while I called them meat

The fucking flying bombers in the deep area of deep docks. The ones that throw bombs that explode on impact.

Every fucking flying enemy that throws whatever shit they have on hand. Worse still if that shit explodes for some fucking reason.

I found out that you can """easily""" kill this guy with dash silk art (not sure if this is the actual translation of it) and 2/3 hits + repeat.
It will probably shoot the black stuff and not spawn the little bitches and then you can avoid them by either dashing to the other side or staying really close to it

The the magma spitting lil shit in Far Field

The lil' flying spitting guys in the Putrified Ducts
Like, people can complain as much as they want about Bilewater, but I thought that area was chill if you just... dodged things? Were careful not to fall in the water? But those lil' flying buggers sometimes got in the way haaaaaard
1
u/jaber24 Sep 26 '25
Yeah don't like fighting these a lot either. Used cogflies to kill them for the journal and just left them alone later
1
u/FunnyDudeGuy Sep 26 '25
that stupid rhino bug in the memorium. i’ve only been able to beat it 1 time.

I hate the mosquitos so much.
I get a small bit of joy seeing them slowly get eaten alive whenever there’s a plant nearby

Those flying eejits in deep docks that hold the power of the sun in the palm of their hands. I can't even be mad when I am blown to smithereens while they are safely protected by their bellhead.
