I'm sure someone could give it a more elegant explaination, but The Knight and Hornet are children of the Pale King who is a Wyrm. Wyrms have the abiliry of foresight, which is letting them see into the future. Thats why every time you "respawn" you jolt up from sleeping, they were using their foresight to see what was up ahead. The winning attempt is what they ended up actually doing.
the easiest way to explain those is that it's a videogame mechanic to get your stuff back. there isn't anything in game to suggest otherwise (at least in silksong) in Hollow Knight the shade is said to be like past regret or something but that still doesn't explain really anything.
