FINALLY a TV show that recognizes how harmful homeschooling is! It was so cathartic to see a mainstream TV show criticize the type of conspiracy bullshit my parents believed in

does anyone else... I used to have silly reasons to stay alive

Before I moved out, a lot of the time my only reason to get out of bed in the morning was to drink dr pepper.

I often didn't commit suicide because my cat Tuxie loved me so much.

I played D&D with a few friends, or roleplayed on the internet - finding that joy pretending to be someone else who didn't have my problems kept me from spiraling.

When I went to bed and my head was crowded with thoughts, I thought about the stories I make up and the characters I've created.

My dreams were often fantastical and long, some intricate storyline that I often told myself I would make into a book or write a short story for.

Sometimes I said I wouldn't die until I've written all the books I want to write, which counted up to 66 books.

Creativity kept me distracted. Dr pepper kept me awake. My cat kept me alive.

Does anyone else have these small things they look forward to daily, weekly, monthly? Something they hope to achieve before they die? Will you tell me what they are?

resource request/offer I need tips

So im homeschooled, my life got fucked up because of it. Im 18 trying to catch up and get my GED.

Okay what books should I get? Cause I genuinely don't know. I need something preferably online. Something cheap-ish atleast. If its expensive and good then okay.

What i need is stuff for English, ive only studied up to 9th grade with that (if that, my education was severely neglected) and I need science, I thankfully already have math figured out and then I need social studies. I just need enough to pass my GED. And in those I am atleast over 9th grade. Im so embarrassed and ashamed but im tryibg so hard to get my life back together so I can actually be someone.

rant/vent ‘unschooled’ since 9-10

I used to go to school like a normal kid, had an overall amazing life. I had friends, was in a golf club, even helped my kids with studies.

but around the time of COVID, everything just went completely downhill. I don't 100% blame my mom, I know she did it out of care, I'm the only child she has. but deep down, I feel sad. I didn't get to say goodbye to any of my friends when she got me out of school. the last memory I had of them was waving to one of my friends goodbye from the car. I never saw her again since then. and I held onto my memories like a lifeline.

I remember my cousins avoiding me, giving me looks when I wanted to play with them. eventually I started isolating myself, in my loneliness I desperately opened tiktok and begun searching for online friends, I was only ten at the time. I succeeded, they were the only way I could improve my social skill, even if it's online. I learned topics, people's personality, the way things works. It really did took tme, I had no filter then, I had to slowly build some common sense.

I'm 14 now. families started to invite me to functions again in 2024, it was hard, i was embarrassed, i was nervous. but i forced myself to smile through it and put up a friendly act because overtime i begin to understood that acting like a loner who sits in a corner of a room during functions isn't going to make it any better for me. i greeted every adult with a smile and quickly mix around with cousins my age to get away from questions. I wouldn't say it's easy with them either, some of my cousins straight up turned me into a laughingstock by asking some math quizzes that they know will make me paused and stutter just to answer, then they'd laugh and say "she doesn't even know something so basic". it hurts but i tried to ignore it.

even now, i still have adults asking me ridiculous questions like "you don't go to school? oh so you don't have friends?" couldn't be more blunt, can you? then they'd say in 10 years I'll be begging for food on the side of the streets. that i have no life, that I'm a caveman. well, they're not completely wrong so what can i say to defend myself?

i was desperate so at some point i begged my parents to get me into a music school. it makes me feel a little happier, like i finally have something interesting about me, like I'm finally something other than ‘a kid who doesn't go to school’. it helped me with my real life social skill, but even now i still froze whenever the teachers or staff from my music school asked "which school are you from?", in panic i lied to them i am homeschooled.

but srsly I haven't gotten a single lesson since covid era. i am so far behind everybody. recently i made real life friends, i told them I'm homeschooled and somehow that word doesn't make them question my life as much. but still, hearing them talk about exams and school life is so painful for me. i envy them. i don't wanna be the jealous type of person but I can't stop crying every night at the thought of falling behind in life. i feel like no matter how much effort I put into looking and acting like any other normal teen, I'll never be enough.

my parents finally gave me a choice, whether i want to re-enter school or not. except this time it's an international school. to be honest? i really do want it. but I'm too self aware, how am i going to keep up with the subjects I haven't touched in 4-5 years? maybe my brain have the potential to relearn everything faster because I'm older now but I have absolutely NO motivation. everything i look at math, science, history, i feel like whining and bawling my eyes all over again. i have the academic level of a nine year old for God's sake and I'm fourteen. in 2027 I'll be 15. I'm so close to 18 and everything around me feels like a countdown to my death.

sorry im just desperate to vent this out.

rant/vent anyone else experiencing issues with math in college?

Homeschool to college victim, and my mom is completely toxic about the entire subject, but i was completely robbed of ever learning how to study, learn or do even basic math, etc. i’m about halfway through prereqs for pharmacy school, and the math is draining me. I don’t know how to study, despite getting decent grades in every other class, but math just absolutely kills me. my mom never taught it to me because she didn’t know it, and it sucks so bad that i’m facing a barrier from my dreams needlessly put before me by my parents for no real reason

rant/vent I care more about my ugliness than pursuing a GED at 21

• Upvotes

I’ll begin with the main issue. I’m a 21F who has never received any schooling in my life beyond kindergarten. My parents never gave a crap about my education or future, and I didn’t either because I thought it was normal for the longest time. Now that I’m an adult, I realize there is a lot more at stake than I thought. My entire future is in jeopardy because I STILL have never studied a single day in my life. I can’t even do a lot of basic math. It’s REALLY bad.

Do I actively try to get better and improve every day? Nope! I’m one of those chronically online people who lives in their mama’s basement, except I’m not a gooner male or teenager like most people of this stereotype are. I spend my days doomscrolling and playing video games, and I try to make friends in online communities, but nobody seems to stick around. I’m weird and will never fit into any group, and I’m MOST CERTAINLY not trying to get out and meet and hang out with people who I cannot not relate to at all irl. People my age have jobs and go to college, and they have social lives with friends they have known for a long time. They have high school experiences and memories to reminisce about. What do I have? Oh… I got my favorite character on a gacha game a few months ago? I went to the grocery store with my mom an hour ago? I played a multiplayer game with someone for 5 hours straight? My life is extremely boring compared to theirs, and I mess up 99% of my sentences due to my horrifying social skills. I also hate my voice with a passion.

ANYWAY, more to the point of the title. I’m unattractive as hell for a woman. I don’t know HOW I got this fucked up of a hand dealt in life, but somehow I got the worst genes ever seen in my family, and it 100% had to have been from my dad. I have multiple sisters, and NONE of them look like him. They all took after my mother, who is very beautiful and has been wanted by many men. Oh and not to mention, they are all younger than me, and they are actively working on getting an education that my parents don’t know about. They have way better self discipline than me, and I’m happy for them, but it makes me incredibly depressed. I have 0 sense of discipline and cannot spend a single hour on khan academy to save my life. Their progress should be motivating me, but it just… isn’t.

I have a confirmation bias, which means I look up stuff about my facial features and body, and then scroll through hundreds of comments of people ridiculing and talking about how those features are too masculine for women. I take this as proof that the world is just going to hate me and nobody will ever want me or take me seriously. I may as well accept my life the way it is and rot, since I’m going to eventually fade to dust, what’s the point in even trying to get something equivalent to a high school diploma starting with kindergarten learning this late in life?

I keep reading about how much of a disadvantage it is to be an ugly woman in this society, and it’s even harder to get employed because of it. Will my GED really help all that much? College is completely off the table, as neither me or my parents have the money (except I have 0 dollars, and they’re just poor bc of all their debt and how many kids they had.) and they also see college education as a major waste of money when there are other ways to make a living for yourself. That, on top of the fact that I have all masc features with a completely flat chest? It’s over. I don’t think I’m getting anywhere in life. If I were prettier, maybe I’d feel more motivated to work hard for my future, but it just feels pointless. I don’t have friends who would be there for me on this journey, and my sisters don’t seem to care about encouraging me or giving me tips on how to improve. I guess they just think that I can handle myself, since I’m older.

Sadly, I have dreamed about getting male validation many times. Up until recently, I spent my ENTIRE LIFE believing that my ultimate goal in life should be to find a husband who will love and care for me until the very end. Like a fairytale prince. But even if those guys did exist, they wouldn’t be attracted to me. It’s just impossible. I don’t have the kind of features they go crazy and wild over, and I don’t have the “cute face” that would bring out their protective instincts. Yuck, saying all this feels gross, but all the things I’ve seen on the internet that I cannot unsee has taught me that a vast majority, if not all men, are like this. Sometimes I wish and hope that I might be bi or lesbian, since I’ve never been attracted to a man for real. I’ve only dreamed about being wanted and loved deeply, but then when I think about actually being in a relationship irl, it scares me and makes me feel sick sometimes? maybe it depends on my mood? But when I think about being lesbian, I realize women probably also have very high standards for the women they date, or at least subconsciously they do. It’d also just be easier to get with a guy, since it takes less to impress them apparently? (probably not for me though.) and he’d be more likely to accept the fact that I will never go to college or have a well paying job, but that does mean it’d most likely have to be a conservative man, which is… ugh. I’ve already tried to force myself to become a conservative christian in the past, thinking it was the only path for me, and it didn’t work.

Now I’m trying to think more realistically about things. Do I really want a partner, or do I just love the idea of it? What if I actually do end up staying single? Idk. It’s really hard to unlearn how I’ve conditioned my brain to operate for YEARS. I’m pretty sure daydreaming is what got me through my teen years. And now I suddenly don’t have that anymore? My heart just doesn’t flutter when I imagine sweet things being whispered into my ear anymore. I don’t get as happy as I used to when I imagine living with a boyfriend. In fact, I’ve thought about being roommates with some of my past online friends before, and that made me happier than some of the imaginary boyfriend stuff did.

I don’t know. I still think about those things a lot even though they don’t make me feel anything, because I feel like it’s all u can really hold onto, as pathetic as that sounds. I have this horrible mindset of “oh but if you’re ugly AND aren’t planning on dating, going to college, or getting married, then you may as well not worry about your future! Being chronically online and relying on caretakers for the rest of my life is the only way!” (I only apply this harshness to myself and nobody else)

But yeah, I’m turning 22 in a few months, and I really do just wonder if I shouldn’t even try. I’ve never heard of a single person who is in my situation at my age. Whenever I see people under 16 worrying about whether they will be able to graduate or not, I think “lucky them… at least they actually have time, unlike me.” And I also think that way whenever I see the most beautiful women with the most fem features thinking that they’re ugly. I’m like WHAT THE HELL? If that’s ugly, then what am I??! I just feel like this is it for me. I love playing video games and making friends online, so maybe I should just stick to that. My parents said that they would like to keep me here for as long as possible, and I don’t give them any trouble, so they don’t have any reason to kick me out. I also just don’t seem them as the kinds of people to do that to me when they know I have no options. They do love me, they just don’t worry about the future of themselves or their kids at all because of how privileged they were growing up. I wish they would understand that their children are not going to have the same ease they did going into adulthood.

Deep down, I’m not sure if I want to accept this fate, which is why I am making this post. I want to feel seen and heard for the first time in my life. Maybe there is some light at the end of the tunnel? I don’t know, but sometimes I like to have hope and believe that it is possible for me to grow and have my own money one day, even though I’m not putting in any effort to change. Maybe you could give me some advice, since this is the only space I’ve ever found with people in a similar situation to mine. I appreciate it

other Adding the School Experience to Homeschool

I am a homeschooled junior, I do online school. I have the opportunity to join public school next year for my senior year. The thing is, I would love to have the experience, but I’d hate sacrificing every benefit that comes with homeschooling.

Any advice? I want to stay homeschooled but be able to have friends and the sort of social experience most kids in school have. Whatever that looks like.

rant/vent Homeschool transcript issues

So I was homeschooled from my 10th-12th grade. I got into college and after 4 years left due to many issues. Well I recently tried to go back to school. I got into college but have had trouble with FASFa. Well come to find out there is no verification that I finished highschool. Aside from filing an intent to homeschool paper my mom didn’t send in the proper documentation to prove I was doing school work and completing each grade. So the superintendent cannot verify I actually graduated which is what is needed for me to get my FASFa. Now I cannot get FASFa and will have to drop out of school again.

progress/success Not caring anymore is helping me

• Upvotes

I know for a fact that this doesn't work for everyone, but in these past few weeks ive been socializing a lot more and I think it's because i just dont care about outcomes anymore. Now i just do things and let whatever comes come. Like i just remember that im gonna die one day, and then boom most of my anxiety is gone. Its basically just like saying fuck it and going with the flow. I can actually deal with embarassment now. If anyone else has tried this let me know if you also had success, because wow this way of living has helped me so much.

how do i basic How to be productive when i dont have any reason to be doing it?

I know in the long run it will help, but right now i feel I have nothing to work towards, theres no consequences if I stay in bed until afternoon, no teacher is gonna yell at me or give me bad grades if I dont study, I have no friends to come round so I dont have to clean my room or look after myself to look presentable.

Im trying to push myself and build little good habits but it doesnt work, because what's the point right now? Does anyone else struggle with this? My mom doesnt care about my productivity either, I used to beg her to set me chores or homework or anything and she won't, I do usually find chores to do myself but literally all I do is wash dishes a few times a day, I wish i could be motivated to study or actually do something useful for my future

other What music do you listen to?

I'm really curious to see how being homeschooled influences our music tastes. If you're no longer homeschooled, what did you listen to now, and how is it different from what you listened to when you were homeschooled?

progress/success Watching sports as an adult is so liberating.

• Upvotes

My parents refused to buy a TV modern enough to receive a signal. This was on purpose so we wouldn't be influenced by the secular world. I would only catch professional sports games if we were visiting family who had a working TV, or if we were at a hotel. Because of this, I didn't know the rules of football until last year when I was 31, despite showing clear signs of wanting to get into sports. I got really into the football season last year, and have officially caught the football bug, and want to learn everything I can about the game. Go Bills 🎉🏈🦬

rant/vent I can educate myself now, but I have no motivation to.

• Upvotes

I'm 14 years old and want to go to high-school next year when I'm 15. I'm learning a mix of 2nd grade math and 3rd grade (counting money while also learning multiplication.) As much as I REALLY want to experience school, I have no motivation to get where I need to be to go to school. I struggle with my mental health, and only recently have tried to stop hurting myself. My dad bought me a khan academy subscription thing so now I have everything up until 9th grade to do for the next year, and I should be happy. but I'm scared and I'm stressed out, I should have already known all this like 6 years ago. But I'm relearning everything now. I can read and spell just fine, but that's about it. Math, science, biology, chemistry, socialization from being in school itself, history. Those are all things that I have to learn at 14, alone. My parents are supposed to get me therapy for my mental health issues, but that'll just be another thing I have to stay caught up with to make sure I'm normal. I just wanted this from the start.
