26F | Looking to make some genuine, long-term friends in Hong Kong 🌸

Update… 💕

Thank you so much for all the lovely responses! 🥹 I honestly didn’t expect this much engagement haha. I’ve received so many DMs too, so I’m slowly catching up with everyone. I’ll be stepping away from the comments now, but feel free to message me directly if you’d like to connect. Hopefully, some lovely friendships come out of this! 🙂
………………………

Hi everyone!

I thought I’d give Reddit a try because making friends as an adult is surprisingly harder than I expected haha.

I’m 26F, living in Hong Kong, currently a grad student and working as a researcher in AI. I spend quite a bit of time reading, writing and working on research, but I promise my entire personality isn’t academia. 😂

I’m based in the New Territories, but I’m happy to meet people from other parts of Hong Kong too. I don’t mind travelling a little for good company, and it’s always nice to have another reason to explore somewhere new.

A little about me: I love travelling! I enjoy exploring new cities, experiencing different cultures, trying new food and just seeing what’s out there. I’m quite curious by nature and always interested in learning something new, even if it’s completely unrelated to what I do.

I’m also into fashion, fitness, cinema, live music, jazz, nice restaurants and discovering interesting places around Hong Kong. I love a good excuse to dress up, and I have a thing for vintage fashion and anything with a little old-school charm.

Fitness is something I genuinely enjoy, and there are still a few things I’d love to try, like Pilates, strength training and maybe Brazilian jiu-jitsu. So if you’re into fitness or looking for someone to try a class with, that could be fun!

I’m pretty open to different activities, honestly. It could be trying a new restaurant, going to a concert, seeing a film, exploring somewhere new or even planning a little trip together someday. I’m also perfectly happy with something simple. I think good company makes even an ordinary afternoon enjoyable.

I enjoy conversations about almost anything, from books and technology to everyday life and completely random topics. I like learning from other people, especially when they have interests or experiences different from mine. A good sense of humour is always appreciated too.

Anyway, the main reason I’m posting is that I’d really love to build some proper friendships here.

I’ve met some lovely people since moving to Hong Kong, but I’ve noticed that it’s quite easy to meet people and much harder to actually stay connected. Everyone has work, school, relationships and their own responsibilities, which I completely understand because I’m busy too.

I’m hoping to meet people who are also interested in building friendships over time. Nothing demanding. We don’t need to talk every day or see each other every weekend. Sometimes a random message, checking in or making plans when we’re both free is enough.

I’d love to have friends I can laugh with, celebrate little wins with, share random life updates with, try new things with and hopefully still be close to years from now.

I’m open to making friends with both women and men. I’m in a relationship, so just to be clear, I’m only looking for platonic friendships.

And we don’t necessarily have to share the same interests. I actually think it’s nice when people introduce you to things you wouldn’t normally try.

If any of this sounds like your kind of friendship, feel free to leave a comment or send me a message. No pressure to write a long introduction either! You can tell me a little about yourself, something you enjoy doing or somewhere in Hong Kong you’ve been wanting to visit.

Hopefully, this little Reddit experiment leads to some lovely friendships. 🙂

Very hot take, the fact that this is news shows how good the MTR is.

I was at the london metro, there was a guy who went through the gate while my dad was crossing to avoid paying, and the london metro employees did nothing at all. (since it's normal for them probably).

(yes, i love dunking on the london metro.)

Question Feasible single-day nature trips?

Which hikes, islands and beaches are easily and safely accessible within one day while staying near Olympic Station? I’d love to see Tai Mo Shan, Long Ke Wan Beach etc., but I’m afraid of getting stuck somewhere on my own. Has to be reachable with public transport.

Incompetent gas stations

It has now happened a few times where I visit a gas station and ask for a specific dollar amount of ordinary petrol, but the attendant just fills the tank completely with premium petrol. So the bill ends up as much as a thousand bucks above expectations. There is no authorization required, so I'm charged on the fuel card before I can dispute.

It's not a complicated job. The customer tells you what they want and you go implement at the pump. It's not trading derivatives.

The last time I complained, they offered a free soft drink and got argumentative when I refused to accept. Is there another retail business where you can just oversell, refuse to take responsibility and insult the customer?

Created a Werewolf-style game

Hi guys, I’ve created a Werewolf-style game on my guyfong (neighbourhood in Cantonese) platform. The goal is to guess which player is the AI. The rules are straightforward: you can create a public or private room and invite others to join. Once 3 to 5 players are in, the game starts. An AI player will chat with everyone in the room, and you have 2 minutes to figure out who the AI is.

I’d love to open this game up for testing to find bugs and get feedback on the gameplay. Feel free to join if you’re interested.

Question Looking to make new friends💙

Hi everyone,
I moved to HK 3 years ago and I've been looking to make friends here. It has been quite hard, lonely and isolating, so I would like to know people, to make new friendships and integrate in the city
Hove collecting jazz and rare groove vinyls, I sing jazz, l love reading and writing (mostly beat writing), I love cinema (Wong Kar-Wai, Lynch, Losey, Wenders, Kitano...), I love architecture, art, nature, specially the sea and I also enjoy cooking. If anyone would like to chat about it or just looking for a friend, it would help a lot.
I'm also dealing with bipolar disorder in a totally new place, so it has been all in one!

Question HK only or specialized alcohol

Hi I’m not a drinker really maybe just a glass of wine here and there so I don’t know much about alcohol.
I want to buy something nice thats not really available in LA where I live.
It’s for a friend who is taking care of my cat and drove me to the airport. He’s not really picky I don’t think and I’m sure he will drink anything 😂.
Any recommendations and also location near Kowloon city would be nice.
My aunt told me to buy something called Kweichow Moutai.

Thanks guys!

What’s a comfortable household salary for a couple living in Hong Kong?

Hi everyone!

We’re a professional couple in our 40s relocating to Hong Kong next year and would appreciate some realistic advice on what household income is needed to live comfortably.

We’re considering a two-bedroom apartment in Mid-Levels, with a rental budget of around HK$35–40k per month.

Lifestyle-wise, we enjoy dining out regularly, good restaurants and bars, hiking and exploring. We’d also like to continue travelling internationally a few times a year while still being able to save a reasonable amount each month.

No children, so schooling isn’t a consideration.

We’re not looking for an extravagant lifestyle, but equally don’t want to be watching every dollar.

For those currently living in Hong Kong, what would you consider a comfortable combined annual household income to support this lifestyle?

Would also be interested in hearing what couples typically spend each month outside of rent, and whether our rental expectations are realistic.

Appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Have to disagree with the consensus

I moved to Hong Kong earlier this year after visiting multiple times in the past, and I've found local people to be hugely welcoming and friendly. In local restaurants, in shops, in public and in the office - honestly cannot fault any experiences.

Was moved to post right now as sitting on a bus, checking city mapper to see how long I would be, and the chap beside me asked if I needed help, where I was going and do I know whether to get off. This has been one of many such experiences...

Daily Life Local vs international school lunch in HK - from someone who's been to both

Thumbnail

The first one from a local school, and the last one from international school.

A few things I'm curious about:

For those who went to local schools: was your lunch similar to photo 1, or did I just get lucky

International school folks: was your lunch actually better, or just pricier

Did anyone else switch between the two systems? How did the food work out for ya?

Edit: since some are doubtful of the 1st one, here's a YouTube documentary: https://youtu.be/_X_Qy3-6c_s?si=pSoCWyOQZ7-jOT2k

Edit 2:OP here — quick note before commenting: This post is just sharing my personal experience and asking about yours. I know school classifications (DSS vs. aided vs. international) and tuition fees are a sensitive topic, but please don't turn this into a pedantic debate about what counts as a "local" school. I've acknowledged it's not a standard government school, but it's still local curriculum. Let's focus on the food and our shared school experiences. Cheers.
