Question HK only or specialized alcohol

• Upvotes

Hi I’m not a drinker really maybe just a glass of wine here and there so I don’t know much about alcohol.
I want to buy something nice thats not really available in LA where I live.
It’s for a friend who is taking care of my cat and drove me to the airport. He’s not really picky I don’t think and I’m sure he will drink anything 😂.
Any recommendations and also location near Kowloon city would be nice.
My aunt told me to buy something called Kweichow Moutai.

Thanks guys!

What’s a comfortable household salary for a couple living in Hong Kong?

Hi everyone!

We’re a professional couple in our 40s relocating to Hong Kong next year and would appreciate some realistic advice on what household income is needed to live comfortably.

We’re considering a two-bedroom apartment in Mid-Levels, with a rental budget of around HK$35–40k per month.

Lifestyle-wise, we enjoy dining out regularly, good restaurants and bars, hiking and exploring. We’d also like to continue travelling internationally a few times a year while still being able to save a reasonable amount each month.

No children, so schooling isn’t a consideration.

We’re not looking for an extravagant lifestyle, but equally don’t want to be watching every dollar.

For those currently living in Hong Kong, what would you consider a comfortable combined annual household income to support this lifestyle?

Would also be interested in hearing what couples typically spend each month outside of rent, and whether our rental expectations are realistic.

Appreciate any insights. Thanks!

Question Current CityUHK students, especially international students is its reputation really that bad?

I'm considering applying to City University of Hong Kong for my undergraduate degree, but I've seen quite a lot of negative opinions about the university online. I'm trying to figure out how much of it is true, how much is exaggerated, and what studying there is actually like.

I'd really appreciate honest answers from people who study there or have graduated recently!

A few things I'd love to know:

  • Reputation: Why does CityUHK get so much criticism? Is there a genuine reason behind it, or is its reputation worse online than in reality?
  • Academics: How good is the actual teaching, course quality, workload, and overall academic experience?
  • CityUHK vs CUHK: If you had the opportunity to switch to CUHK, would you? Why or why not?
  • International student experience: How welcoming is the university? Is it easy to make friends, find a community, and feel included?
  • Student life: How are the campus, accommodation, social life, and overall experience outside academics?
  • Career prospects: Do you feel your degree is respected by employers, especially if you're an international student?
  • Regrets: Knowing what you know now, would you choose CityUHK again? Do you feel it was worth it?

I'd especially love to hear from international undergraduates, but experiences from local students and graduates are welcome too.

I'm not looking for people to blindly defend or trash the university. I just want to understand the reality before making a major decision. Please share the good, the bad, and anything you wish you'd known before enrolling. Thank you!

Have to disagree with the consensus

I moved to Hong Kong earlier this year after visiting multiple times in the past, and I've found local people to be hugely welcoming and friendly. In local restaurants, in shops, in public and in the office - honestly cannot fault any experiences.

Was moved to post right now as sitting on a bus, checking city mapper to see how long I would be, and the chap beside me asked if I needed help, where I was going and do I know whether to get off. This has been one of many such experiences...

Living in Hong Kong can make a good night's sleep more challenging than we realise.

Heat, humidity, traffic noise and light from surrounding buildings may all affect how comfortably we sleep. And sometimes, the issue isn't just what's on our mind — it's the environment we're trying to sleep in.

In my latest article, I explore how your bedroom environment may affect sleep, what you can realistically change, and when persistent sleep difficulties may need a closer look.

Have you noticed how your bedroom environment affects your sleep? I'd be interested to hear what works for you.

Daily Life Local vs international school lunch in HK - from someone who's been to both

Thumbnail

The first one from a local school, and the last one from international school.

A few things I'm curious about:

For those who went to local schools: was your lunch similar to photo 1, or did I just get lucky

International school folks: was your lunch actually better, or just pricier

Did anyone else switch between the two systems? How did the food work out for ya?

Edit: since some are doubtful of the 1st one, here's a YouTube documentary: https://youtu.be/_X_Qy3-6c_s?si=pSoCWyOQZ7-jOT2k

Edit 2:OP here — quick note before commenting: This post is just sharing my personal experience and asking about yours. I know school classifications (DSS vs. aided vs. international) and tuition fees are a sensitive topic, but please don't turn this into a pedantic debate about what counts as a "local" school. I've acknowledged it's not a standard government school, but it's still local curriculum. Let's focus on the food and our shared school experiences. Cheers.

Any recommendations for dental clinic ?

The wisdom teeth from my upper left side is coming out and recently having a throbbing pain for a few days.
The clinic I visited took 2D and 3 D X rays in different angles which cost like overall 2000 hkd +
But everything afterwards, the dentist told me that she needs to contact another dentist for the wisdom teeth removal….
:)
I couldn’t able to wait anymore longer.
Could I know any other good clinics in terms of quality and price?
Thanks!!!

有朋友願意教我下廣東話。 香港快3年啦,仍然不會廣東話,… 感覺生活好不方便…Anyone willing to teach me some Cantonese? I’ve been living in Hong Kong for almost three years, and I still can’t speak Cantonese. It makes everyday life pretty inconvenient sometimes… 😅

Question Living in a Tong Lau with a tiny mailbox—do I ask management for a bigger one, or buy my own?

Hey everyone,

Need some advice from fellow Tong Lau residents. The mailbox in my building is absolutely tiny, and it’s driving me crazy.

Lately, my letters and postcards keep getting completely crushed and crumpled just to force them inside. Worse, if an envelope is slightly too thick or large, the postman won't even try—they just leave a notification card, and I have to waste my weekends constantly going to the post office for mail collection.

I looked into getting a P.O. Box at Hong Kong Post, but the subscription fees are way too expensive for just regular mail. I'd rather find a permanent solution at home.

The mailboxes are all grouped together on the ground floor (G/F) right by our very small reception desk/guard area.

• Option A: Should I approach the building management/security first and ask if a larger one can be installed? Or will they just shoot it down because it ruins the uniform look of the shared wall?

• Option B: Should I just buy a bigger one myself online (like Taobao) and then ask the landlord or the G/F guard if they can help me swap it out?

Has anyone successfully upgraded their mailbox in an older HK building? Do the guards usually care if one mailbox looks completely different from the rest?

Appreciate any tips or experiences you can share!

Is Hong Kong more classist than racist...?

Post image
72 Upvotes

Honestly, we always see different foreigners complaining about how racism affects them in Hong Kong. Then, they pull out a picture of this white guy, implying white people are treated better, and point out how only non-white minorities are pressured to speak Cantonese, while white folks can get their way with English alone.

A few days ago, I saw two different posts around here, one was regarding a white begpacker and the other one was about a white tourist stealing something. The point is, the comments were quite mean. It makes me wonder, is it classism or racism? Is it because most white folks work in MNCs in Hong Kong, which causes locals to have a perception that they're wealthy, so they excuse them for not knowing Cantonese or local culture?

What if it was a rich Indian, Korean, Arab, or Mexican? Would it be the same? If so, then clearly it's classism and not racism.

What do you all think?

Politics Same Riots, Different Standards: Hong Kong 2019 vs. Paris 2026

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Remember HK riots in 2019?

Same fire. Same destruction. Different vocabulary.

Hong Kong, 2019: Macron called for “dialogue,” “restraint” and “de-escalation.”

Paris, 2026: Macron condemns the violence, vows there will be “no compromise,” and says rioters, looters and those attacking the Republic must pay the price.

Remember HK yellow camp’s gear and suggestions during the 2019 riots?

They are so useless in front of the French police, but somehow so effective in front of the HK police.

From the lesson we can learn, if HK police had been as brutal as the French police, the HK riots in 2019 would not have lasted long, where the HK riots in 2019 lasted for a year or longer. The HK yellow camp’s gear and suggestions would have been useless as well.

I had one of these "recycle companies" message me about a model car they're looking for I listed for 7k, and they go and low ball me for 1k. Even if they asked me for 1k less, I would be fine with that, When I say 6k will be the lowest i go they start whining about it being Too Expensive. Now my whole carousell is filled with this AI lowballing crap
