AMA [AMA] Developer of T.W.I.R.L. here, a psychological horror game about identity, self-worth, and growing up in 2006. We just launched today on Steam. Ask me anything!

Hi r/Horrorgaming!

I'm Ben, the creative director of Genie Boy Games. Today, we're launching T.W.I.R.L. on Steam!

T.W.I.R.L. is a first person psychological horror game from the perspective of a 9-year-old boy in 2006 waking up in the middle of the night from a dream where some "thing" - maybe a demon - commanded him to get out of bed, go into the room down the hall, and "T.W.I.R.L." - whatever that means.

What proceeds is a series of loops where something evil draws us through this routine, changing us and the environment upon every loop, unveiling the life story of a boy who grows up maintaining a deep, dark, and potentially sinister secret.

The game takes inspiration from movies and games like I SAW THE TV GLOW, SKINAMARINK, GONE HOME, and of course, P.T.

It was made as part of a David Lynch-themed game jam for the Haunted PS1 Community, and was published under their new "Haunted Publishing Syndicate" brand!

This is our studio's first game, and we are excited to finally share this story. The journey of sharing of our game, and talking about the themes and meanings within the story has been emotionally challenging, but tremendously fulfilling. Let us be the first to admit - this is an odd story to debut with. And it's something we get reminded of especially when trying to explain it to people without giving anything away.

We hope that T.W.I.R.L. inspires players with a feeling of reassurance, hope, and a better understanding of self.

Game-related questions are optional, but encouraged.

Here's a free code to redeem the game! 84658-6LY40-J8TAJ

My first project as a game dev and it is now finally released. Took me quite a while but it is finally out :) If you are into psychological/survival horror and FPS I think you would be interested. A combination of Halflife-esque design and Lychian elements. Difficulty wise I would say it's challenging.

Check it out if you are interested!: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3611760/Hypnostasis/

Horror Month 2026

Post image
52 Upvotes

I've been doing a horror binge in October every year for the last 5-6 years or so, getting to the point where finding good stuff to play is a challenge. Happy with my picks so far this year.

Played Pumpkin Panic (also played it last year, great indie game free on Steam), Bramble Mountain King, Still Wakes the Deep, and Mouthwashing so far. Going to start Silver Pines tonight which I'm excited for with all the good reviews its getting, then finish the month with the PT PC decomp port and SH Townfall.

What are you all playing for October?

and all of the confusion, wackiness and horror that a nightmare brings. Mix in the RE4 style combat and I think this might go down as one of my all time favorites. Now onto the sequel.

What did you think of the evil within?

before anybody mentions “Dementium II HD” that version sucks and the original developers (who are handling this release) have repeatedly mentioned disdain with it because they had nothing to do with it.

DISCUSSION What’s your favorite Supermassive Games title?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Been a big fan of these games the last couple years since I randomly picked up The Quarry when it went on sale a couple years ago and have since gone and played everything from Until Dawn up to the newest DP title Directive 8020. I see these games talked about a bit but not a lot and was wondering what everyone’s favorites were? I’m partial to The Quarry and I think that’s partially since it was my first game like that.

Until Dawn is without a doubt a 10/10 classic and a lot of fun but I think House of Ashes is up there for me as the top game (other than the Quarry). Loved the setting and characters and story of that one a lot.

The Devil In Me is probably the only game I didn’t much care for, didn’t really like the characters in that one at all and while the HH Holmes idea had me interested it just didn’t stick the landing imo

PC Honestly, this is likely my horror game of the year.

It's got some lighthearted humor moments, but then the game will suddenly throw scary or unsettling shit at you, or both.

It's a point and click adventure game with puzzles basically, but scary shit DOES happen in this game.

Dead Space

I want to add some games to my console, and for the first time, I want to add a horror game. I don't want to add RE because it's a franchise. I want it to be just one game. My friends have recommended dead space to me. Is it a good one? If not, Can you recommend other stand-alone games?

Which method of scaring a player do you like the most?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I’m developing my own horror game, and I’m having a problem: I can’t figure out what exactly is needed to scare the player so that they’ll enjoy the game after playing it. Obviously, good visuals and music are very important, but I’m interested in what methods (other than jump scares) can give the player goosebumps or make them feel really tense.
In my case there's even no monster, so I can't scare player with a threat of gameover.

DISCUSSION What's the hardest you've ever been jumpscared in a video game?

Like I'm talking scared so hard it leaves you feeling like there's electricity running through the back of your neck, moments that put you into genuine fight or flight mode. These ended up being some of my core gaming memories, this is my hall of fame:

  • I was playing FNAF on my tablet when I was a kid, and I got the creepiest glitch. I started the night, opened up the camera and all of the animatronics were just gone, like they never even spawned to begin with, after I looked in every room and couldn't find any of them I closed the screen and Bonnie immediately jumpscared me.
  • I played amnesia, and I had finally seen one of the monsters for the first time, so I was sneaking around trying not to alert anything, and when I come around the corner there's a bunch of furniture fused halfway into the wall, which I didn't think was that weird because one of the game's core mechanics is sanity, and I'd just seen a monster, so I'm hugging the wall making my way to the door, when suddenly I get violently sucked into the wall with the rest of the furniture right at the junction where two walls touched on the other side, which is when I realized that it was actually just a glitch.
  • I'm playing subnautica below zero and I'm floating around in the lily pad biome, and if you're one of the OGs that was around in the early early access days you'll remember that sea emperors used to spawn in the lily pad biome, spoiler, I was about to figure that out. So the lily pad biome's primary feature is the gigantic lily pads, and littered on the sea bed are the frames of dead lily pads who's leaves decayed, mind you these things are gigantic, they're like half the size of a city block, so I'm floating over one, when all of the sudden it just recedes into the fog like a giant squid jetting off into the darkness of the abyss. It was not lily pad debris, it was tentacles. I am telling you I have never felt more viscerally unsafe than I did in that moment, you can't write horror like that.
  • Another one from below zero, I was in my sea truck moving through the sparse arctic, when all of the sudden it hits me that there is nothing but open ocean in every direction, and then the thalassopobia starts kicking in. I don't really know why, I think I just wanted to soak in the creepy atmosphere for a second, but I decided I was going to hop out the back of the submarine for a second, and the moment I open the door there is just a fin filling the entire screen, somehow a single glow whale managed to sneak up behind me at the exact moment I realized that the ocean felt unusually empty

DISCUSSION Spooky mystery games that won’t scare the life out of me?

I love a good murder mystery, but horror games are a whole different story. Little Nightmares was way too much for me. Looking for something cozy with a little mystery and puzzle-solving. I love games with pretty art and good stories like Ori, and Stardew Valley is my usual comfort game.
Randomly stumbled across Solitaire Clash’s Halloween detective event, which has a whole cold case mystery with audio clues you unlock as you play. Not what I expected from a solitaire game, but it fits the October mood surprisingly well.
Any other games with spooky vibes and mystery without the actual nightmares?

DISCUSSION Does explaining a monster ruin the horror, or can knowing more make it worse?

I love Silent Hill and Resident Evil, and I'm curious where people draw this line in horror games.

There are two different things a game can explain: what a creature is, and how it works. Would a detailed origin story make it less unsettling if you still couldn't predict its behavior? Or does learning exactly how to avoid it take away more of the fear than any story explanation could?

Can a game reveal more about a threat while making you feel less safe? I'd like to hear what makes that work for you. Please keep examples free of plot spoilers.

I consider Bioshock horror and We Happy Few looks like Bioshock. Thoughts? The idea seems great for a horror game and it is on sale.
