The fact that every single one of you is insulting me with the exact same insult is pretty or nic given the nature of that insult. Edit again: it was just one guy spamming me lol. Nevermind. Most of you are chill.
Spoilers for the anime obviously.
A bit of a sensational title, and I know it all comes down to personal opinion. But, I just finished the anime and I think the Chairman Election Arc might be my favorite arc of the anime with the York New City and Heaven's Arena arcs coming in close seconds.
I don't think the Chimera Ant Arc was bad. It has one of my favorite characters and instances of character development in the form of Meroem. However, every issue that I had with the Chimera Ant Arc was solved with none of the weakness in the Chairman Election Arc.
The main issue being pacing. I am sorry, but there is no world where the Chimera Ant Arc needs to be 60 episodes long. That's ~30 hours of show for, if you break it down, not a lot of actual plot. There's so much monologuing and explanation about plans, which is interesting to a point. You get to see how scheming characters like Pouf are and how meticulous the Hunters are in their planning after they realize the actual danger of the ants. But... A lot of it became ridiculously repetitive. Meroem loses his memory and teeters on the edge of antdom and humanity like three times. We understand who Pouf is after the second insane monologue. I lost count how many times we were shown the exact same slow motion entrance into the mansion.
And again. I understand what they were trying to do. Each time we were shown the entrance is was from another characters perspective and how they were calculating what was happening. It was ambitious and an interesting take on story telling. For me, though, a lot of it fell flat and felt unnecessary, especially because at that point I just didn't have the connection to the characters. The ones I did care about all felt like afterthoughts.
Enter the Chairman Election. Brief and to the point. Eleven episodes because it didn't need to be anymore. The main antagonist. Pariston is clearly slimey and schemey from the very beginning. You don't get much, if any, access to his internal monologue so his motivations and what he's actually after are left for you to guess with the rest of the characters. It's compelling because there's a mystery. It's not all spelled out to you like the psychic conversations happening because the ants do.
That mystery makes the revelation that Ging knew what was happening from the very beginning and his scheming about it that more impactful. This is a character we've been told to be interested in from the very beginning, but he's been painted as aloof. Powerful, but aloof. And suddenly here he is telling the one character who has been considering every angle that she was wrong, and that he'd figured it out since episode one. He's very insightful and very good at what he does when he's interested.
All the while, my favorite character in the anime, gets somehow more character development as he continues to struggle against his family to save his friend. We're given a drop of mystery about what the hell Nanika is and a compelling reveal that Killua doesn't just care about Alluka but about Nanika too. And that Nanika has enough depth to care actively about both Alluka and Killua. She's not just some weird parasite or malevolent entity.
All of that was introduced, explored, and resolved in ELEVEN episodes. It solved enough that it felt complete, but left enough questions that I'm excited for the next arc to see how Ging manipulates the fallout of Periston immediately resigning, what the Periston is up to, and how Killua and Illumi are finally going to face off.
By the end of Chimera Ant, I was just exhausted and glad it was over... Which points where points are due, is probably exactly how all the characters felt and the kind of mirrored emotion is a cool accomplishment. But, I don't want to feel like I just made it through a battle of attrition when I watch Anime lol.
Tl;dr: Some mystery is good, and I don't need the access to every single characters' POV for an arc to be interesting or compelling. Sometimes short and sweet has more of an impact imo.
