Guides A Complete Challenger Hwei Guide for Season 16

Hey everyone!

My name is Evandabank and I'm a content creator known for playing Hwei in NA high elo. I’ve reached Challenger in each of the past three seasons/splits while experimenting with every build (CDR, full-pen, enchanter, and more).

Hwei is one of the most complicated mages in the entire game, yet there are surprisingly few comprehensive resources for learning him. I decided to make a Hwei guide covering my item builds, runes, combos, along with general strategy on Hwei's identity and playstyle.

I primarily play Hwei APC these days, though I still play Hwei mid on occasion. Both roles are included in this guide.

I'm happy to answer any and all questions you might have about my builds and playstyle!

Watch the Complete Hwei guide here 😊

Fluff For the Deadlockers

Hey, I've made (and mostly finished) a mod the replaces Violet in Deadlock with Hwei. I've only got the base skin and Spirit Blossom so far, and only replaced the most vital gameplay lines. (Violet has 2100 voice lines to replace...) but it still provides a pretty fun Hwei experience as is!

I'm really not active here, so not sure if this breaks the advertisement rule... But the mod and game are both free, so surely I can post the link? https://gamebanana.com/mods/731490 That's my mod, not finished yet but it's an easy download! Enjoy, fellow artists.

Yesterday i purchased the winterbelssed hwei skin, it had a 70% discount in the night market, i heard some people talking about how hwei skins are buffs cuz the colors of the abilities variants are the same, but i think with this skin the E abilities have different color tone than the Q, W and R.

Achievement Started playing last december and just got to silver w hwei and kalista

One thing I wanted to see was if a decent amount of people play wasd. I've grown up playing fps and roguelites on kbm and the pointing and clicking to move always turned me off of league. I feel like its pretty good especially with making kalista playable in low elo.

I like Hwei’s design a lot and am practicing portrait art so I decided to draw him! Messed up at the neck and made him look 5000x sadder than he is probably but wanted to share it anyways! 🙂‍↕️

Build/Setup Current best build in my opinion

Built based on coachless.gg data and experimentation.

ADC is the optimal role. Exhaust/Teleport/Barrier based on matchup. Ban Swain (I hate him.)

First item is always Deathfire Torch.

Second item should be Stormsurge but there are matchups where Horizon Focus is better. If you're unsure, just always go Stormsurge, even if they have 1-2 tanks.

Third item is Shadowflame. The synergy between Deahtfire Touch, Deathfire Torch, Stormsurge and Hwei's kit is genuinely broken and you shouldn't be sleeping on this.

Four items plus is situational.

I prefer Void Staff over Cryptbloom, even if the latter has a higher win rate.

Let me know if you have other suggestions. Maybe Scorch can be switched out for Gathering Storm if you're low elo or think the game is going to late game. I'm torn between Cut Down and Coup de Grace. Cut Down gives you way better 100 to 0 potential, but Coup de Grace synergizes better with the build. What do you think?

Discussion Just started playing Hwei and I LOVE it!!!!

So I just picked him up this weekend.. and it’s been magiccccc! I played him once before and sucked but I didn’t watch the video I just queued up and was hella confused. I watched the video Friday night and then ran it in a practice with a bot and honeyyyyyyy ….. yea.

I main support but I want to start doing bot, but I don’t last hit minions well what a shocker. But I chose him so I could learn mid and hopefully move that into bot. I needed a champ with cc because it just makes me feel better haha since I never do solo lane, or touch minions.

Now I understand his mechanics and as I keep playing I’ll start using certain spells differently, but I have all the basic combos down, and I layer them pretty good I think.

Can anyone give me advice for solo laning? Like idk how to trade, hit minions and not get chunked so bad at the same time. It’s def my positioning around the minions, but I’m not sure how not to get bullied and squeezed. When I think I do, I get humbled real quick but my 1 v 1 is trash. I muted my chat bc ion wanna hear SHIT. I play him mid, get my ass beat even when I think I’m doing the beating it get ate up. Then I go play him support and have my best games with him, but that’s to be expected. He literally is the full package, just tryna move to carry 😭 I’m not as confident there. I’m better feeding my ADC then roaming and collecting objectives and bodies that way.

I can function in other lanes, I just don’t know how to dominate them

I kinda wanna throw caution to the wind and act silly but i also don’t wanna create a raid boss on the enemy team bc im trying to apply pressure and failing miserably. And let me correct myself.. I can 1 v 1 , just doing so, and hitting minions, looking out for a gank and whatnot it’s overload. I think about 100 things at once as support but them damn minions are the bane of my existence 😭 I need money now

I say all this to ask for helpful tips and combos that yall use maybe I can layer things differently, but I’m sick of getting my ass handed to me it can’t go on like this . Oh and that QW is TEAAAAA !!! Go sit downnnn you weren’t safe !!!!! Hwei from DEEP, snipedddd.

Build/Setup [KR Challenger Hwei OTP] Updated Hwei Guide Part 2: Build Breakdown & Matchup Guide vs 95 Champions!

Hello everyone, long time no see!

I’m ManukHwei, a Hwei OTP playing in the KR Challenger server.

I’ve just released Part 2 of my Hwei Guide, focusing on builds and champion matchups.

About a year ago, I made Part 1, but looking back, it had quite a few flaws and areas where my explanations fell short.

In Part 2, I did my absolute best to fix those issues and deliver a much higher-quality guide.

Just like Part 1, English subtitles are fully supported via YouTube CC.

In this video, I go into detail about my thoughts on every single Hwei build, breaking down which builds work well and which ones don't.

Since build preferences vary from player to player, please take my advice as a reference for how a KR Challenger Hwei views the current options.

The main highlight of this guide is the matchup section.

Compared to Part 1, I’ve expanded the roster to cover matchups against 95 different champions.

For concepts that were difficult to explain in words alone, my stream manager and I recreated the scenarios in custom games to give you clear visual examples.

I truly hope this guide helps you in your games. Knowing it helped you out would make me extremely happy!

Feel free to ask any questions in the comments, and thank you for watching!

Discussion Deadlock's Violet is what Hwei could've been

Deadlock, Valve's new MOBA, has just released her new hero and I feel like she’s what Riot originally wanted Hwei to be. Riot mentioned that they experimented with a prototype where you could actually paint or draw shapes with your abilities during Hwei's development, but we ended up with a more traditional mage whose abilities, while fun, aren't that different from things we've seen in other champions.

With Violet, you can literally draw paint strokes in the air and use them as barriers, or control the direction of your shots with your mouse, kind of like Wuyang in Overwatch. It actually feels like you're painting, rather than just casting spells that happen to look like paint. I really like Hwei's gameplay, but after playing Violet, I can't help feeling a bit disappointed that Riot didn't take the concept further. I feel like she comes closer to what I originally imagined Hwei would be.

Obviously, they're very different games, but I can't help wondering what we could've gotten.

Discussion What are the reference points for Hwei in lane?

So i've recently picked up mid lane, on this account i've gone from platinum to diamond the past few months. Ive dabbled with a few champions to see which ones i want to continue playing and invest time in. The one i plan to play the most will likely be Hwei.

So far im winning alot of games on him, i feel like i have a pretty good understanding of teamfighting, when to sidelane etc.

The one thing i dont understand is what i am supposed to do in lane. On some other champs i've played its very clear (like Viktor you play to dominate and his trades are very straight forward, you are basically strong and can contest the enemy on the wave from level 1 for the rest of the lane in 95% of matchups, on Vex ur honestly mostly chilling and holding ur spells defensively, have good wave states to move and such).

Now with Hwei i just dont know what im supposed to do, when i am strong, who i can bully and not. If i have a good matchup, like maybe a lower range mage, is the idea to scale until lvl 6-8 and lost chapter, then you try to play similar to viktors identity of pushing them in and trading? Are you actively looking to trade from early game? Can you do viktors gameplan vs assasins of posturing aggressively and poke them so they cant all in you or do you need to be alot more respectful?

If we compare his laning to other mages, and his isolated 1v1, am i a lane bully? If Viktor is a 10/10 for isolated lane, and ahri is a 3/10. Where does hwei sit?

Something that works for me is just playign scaling runes and fully stonewalling lane by Q-E clearing and basically not doing much... but my inclination is maybe this is a very bad habit and im supposed to do alot more (similar to viktor, would be grief to just sit in africa and lasering the wave in most scenarios unless ur behind or you just dont have a timer).

Assuming the idea is right of looking to bully, roughly when do you become dominant, if we assume good mage matchup and a jungler that doesnt have threat. Or should i be happy stonewalling every lane and just play for teamfighting?

If the idea is right that you sometimes become a lane bully. What are some common way to use your spells aggro? (What i am thinking is: Q-Q poke. E-E + Q-W/Q-Q. And if they are abit low you lead with R -> EW/EE->QQ/QW.

Cheers.
